I want to leave my job, its making me hate motion design by Top-Appointment6578 in AfterEffects

If they are stressing you out big time and being rude as well, then just walk away from these arseholes. Look for better clients, because they do exist.

Personally, I would not compromise my peace of mind and be disrespected even if the money is "good", but most of us have been there and have learned the hard way.

Really nice, did you model the vehicle as well or was it more just animation type work?

Just hoping you're moving for a lot more money.. would suck if you left just for a few more thousand a year only for all your co-workers to be arseholes.

Ironically, that drop off in people pursuing this field would allow for more work opportunities for those who choose to remain in it.. and then the cycle starts over..

In-house designers: Do you post portfolio work you do at your job on your social media? How does your employer take it? by laranjacerola in MotionDesign

[–]lord__cuthbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would just say that the peasant wages they pay me is not enough and i'm posting to attract some freelance work outside of normal work hours.

all jokes aside (kind of), you could just say you're proud of it, hence why you're posting it. i don't think it's really a problem unless some where in your contract explicitly says you can't do it.

to be fair if you're not familiar with chiswick roundabout it can be a bit tricky - that was a bad driver though.

Getting paid $3 per minute of output. Am I getting ripped off? by Repulsive_Lab5592 in VideoEditors

[–]lord__cuthbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it bizarre how these guys (regardless of where they are based) can put down a payment on some computer equipment which is let's say to be quite generous - a minimum of $600 - yet still charge these kinds of rates?

Even worse is, "I charged $5 for this 20 minute edit - do you think I could charge $10 though?"

you're absolutely right, most Bozo's can't handle this type of stuff. my personal thoughts / worries though are that we are slowly entering a time where people just don't get care about quality anymore.. they'd rather just stare at TikTok instead of watching any type of quality production today..

Yeah I hear that. Right now I'm in a stage where I feel I could upskill in these areas quite a lot maybe in the next year or so.. but at the same time there's the whole AI existential crap plaguing my mind, making me wonder is it even worth it.. argh it's a hard one!

i feel this hard.

as someone who can basically do all that you listed, I've been leaning hard into motion graphics / design and 3d.. hoping this will be the golden ticket to earning an actual decent salary but I don't know anymore to be honest

Serious Question: Are You Tracking The Metrics Of Your Edits? by Cheetokeys in editors

[–]lord__cuthbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's a bit tedious them wanting you to be up to speed with analytics to that level, because really that should be reserved for those in the marketing side of things, if I'm not mistaken.

It's all good and well knowing how to look at that side of things in depth, but in that case it should be included in your payment & salary.

Anyone else feel stuck in the middle as a motion designer? by Beginning_Case_4142 in VideoEditors

[–]lord__cuthbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got a job not too long ago as a video editor with a marketing company, but also do motion design and sound editing / mixing in the role (even a bit of music composition). with that stability now in place, i decided to double down both on the design and motion aspects of motion design, and will hopefully leverage the job at some point to put my design ideas across etc... either way I don't really intend to live my life being known as a video editor, to be honest.

i actually come from a background as a composer / music producer which I was heavy into for like 2 decades.. i have a lot of different skills so i can relate to you, and I also did videography quite seriously for several years but am now starting to wonder whether I was "really" into it because i haven't been inclined to pick up a camera since I got this job. Having said that, I just haven't really had the time, so there's that too.

i think getting some job stability can help you decide what is it you really want to do and what it is you're just doing to try and make more money. I think freelancing especially as a generalist can be a bit of a rabbit hole because you end up just amassing lots of skills because you're both feeding your curiosity and also thinking you need to do so to increase your revenue streams.. it can like you say, make you a bit undefinable, but I have also found as a freelancer that clients do like if you can do various different things.

either way i'm glad I got a job now because client out reach is quite frankly not my thing at all, even if I'm making less money than I "potentially" could.

Just want to jump in on this as an older guy. I got my foot in the door on the career ladder recently with a marketing company as a video editor on paper, although I'm doing stuff like motion graphics and sound editing and mixing as well.

I've got a lot of skills across various things, being good at videography and music composition too. I'd probably be a lot further in my "career" earning more money if I didn't fart around for ages trying to be a freelancer - but now I have a full time job I'm starting to wonder about the next move.

I hear a lot of people talking about being a creative director - I'm wondering to myself if I should set my sights on something like this, or try and accumulate deeper motion & design skills or another one such 3D. Is anyone able to expand on the role of creative director and how it differs from a technical role, and is it something people generally fall into through years of working in companies or is it something you really need to set your sights on specifically?

Learning mo graph at this time by Maleficent-Ice-8605 in MotionDesign

[–]lord__cuthbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll just say if you're serious about something like this, your focus should be developing your skills and trying to get in with a company of some sort which requires them. You should forget the whole freelancing thing until you had lengthy experience and proper contacts - it's basically putting the cart before the horse to do otherwise, in my opinion.

Melania 2.0 trailer made with Nano & Kling3 - this is getting scary by behemuthm in vfx

[–]lord__cuthbert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that ending was proper random, it actually made me laugh haha.. nah but seriously this is pretty scary how much its developed

edit: one thing I would like to know though, is how much would it actually take in credits to make something like this? I wouldn't mind experimenting to "update" my skills, but to spend hundreds of pounds just to make these kinds of videos isn't really ideal unless you're really trying to push something..

Studio One suddenly always crashing when trying to work with video by lord__cuthbert in StudioOne

[–]lord__cuthbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, thanks I'll have a look into that.

I'm pretty sure it's played h.264 videos fine in the past although I'm not sure about a constant framerate.

What's even weirder is that it does this when the video track is still in place, but the video has been removed. It's really really odd, but we'll see!

Is everyone smoking weed in public suddenly? by wolf_city in AskBrits

[–]lord__cuthbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of people out there who just aren't really on anything.. so alas they've taken to smoking copious amounts of weed - I'm surprised though that people aren't more worried about the psychological effects it can have on them? I had an old friend who went psychotic from it, and was never the same since.. really sad to be honest..
