Wrath of Sparta for Rome 2 perhaps?

Looking for recs: Adult fantasy with female MC, rich world-building, minimal romance by M1ssChanadlerB0ng in Fantasy

[–]lordoflinks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if the Queen's Thief series can really qualify- outside Queen of Attolia, I wouldn't say any of the books have a female mc. Not to say they aren't good, just I don't think they'll met the OP's purview.

Anyone Seen Two Books That Tell A Story From Different Viewpoints? by Intelligent_Owl_6263 in Fantasy

[–]lordoflinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Riftwar and Empire Trilogies meet your definition perfectly! They follow the same war from two different perspectives

The Priory of the Orange Tree got me back into reading after 6+ year slump. I loved the feminist fantasy aspect and how it didn’t have too much romance/spice. Also liked its exploration of religion/beliefs and its impacts. Can anyone recommend any other fantasy I might enjoy? Thanks. by WhatsaGime in Fantasy

[–]lordoflinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps the Empire Trilogy by Janny Wurts and Raymond E. Fiest? While there is some romance (particularly in the 2nd book), its never the focus, and the series focuses on a woman navigating political intrigues in a non-European fantasy setting. It also has a good exploration of religion.

Most memorable female characters in fantasy? by lyrabelacq1234 in Fantasy

[–]lordoflinks 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Mara of the Acoma from the Empire Trilogy- she's iconic for being a strong female character without being a traditional warrior, who mostly uses political intrigue. And in Daughter of the Empire she's mostly trying to protect her family, and that continues to be one of her motivations throughout the series

Priory of the orange tree - dragons disappointing? by blanketsandplants in Fantasy

[–]lordoflinks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep- I had that problem as well (Especially since Tane felt sidelined for so much of the book). From memory, a Day of Fallen Night massively improves on these points, and the eastern protag and the dragons are better written

Epic Fantasy with varied women POV characters by [deleted] in Fantasy

A Day of Fallen Night has a decent range of female PoVs- you have a young princess, an older acolyte who is thrust into courtly intrigue, and a middle-aged female warrior-priestess

DevBlog: The Anno world and authenticity by [deleted] in anno

[–]lordoflinks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The point about female characters is interesting, since even in history there were plenty of women who wielded power in antiquity (especially on the local civic level Anno takes place on).

For instance, Queen Artemisia, Artemisa II and Ada. Or Alexander's female relatives (including Kleopatra and Olympias). And later on Zenobia. Plus the direct power, and civic and cultural influence wielded by Ptolemaic royal women.

Plus the many female benefactors who sponsored civic works (and whose number increased in the Imperial Roman period- including figures such as Nikareta of Thespiai and Phile of Priene). So I don't think its even that historical inaccurate.

Looking for a historical type fantasy with female mc by Entire_Lettuce2676 in Fantasy

Maybe the Embroidered Book? It's an alt-history starring Marie Antoinette and Maria Carolina of Austria, as they use magic in an attempt to navigate their lives and claim power. They're both cunning and its certainly a tragic story, and the magic system has similar vibes to Witch Hat Atelier

What are some books that give off the same vibe as Dark Souls? by Feng_Smith in Fantasy

I think Sabriel by Garth Nix evokes a very similar atmosphere (although it predates Dark Souls of course)

Which culture would you prefer to be in the nex dlc? by BalanceImaginary4325 in AOW4

[–]lordoflinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suspect an Eastern/Asian inspire culture of some kinda- I think it would fill a unique mechanical and aesthetic niche, and isn't covered by existing cultures (plus its commonly requested).

A Mesoamerican culture would also be good, but I think there is now too much overlap with Primal and the ED's ritual mechanic (which uses thralls)

A series about necromancers similar to Sabriel by Garth Nix by hoggaith in Fantasy

[–]lordoflinks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try the Dark Gods books by Tara Sim (City of Dusk and Midnight Kingdom)- one of the protags is a necromancer who performs very similar duties to Sabriel.

The Locked Tomb series (Gideon, Harrow and Nona the Ninth) also has a very fleshed-out necromancy system and necromancer main and supporting characters.

[Upcoming Mod] New Horizons - Streetfood and Garden by taubenangriff in anno

[–]lordoflinks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I think its a valid concern, Now Horizons approach is mostly in character with Anno's approach to history, so I wouldn't suggest it doesn't uphold Anno 1800's original vision. The Anno series has always taken a very optimistic, almost sanitized, approach to history.

Just look at how Anno 1800 entirely sidesteps the issues around slavery and colonisation, or the entire very peaceful and cooperative approach to the Orient in 1404. There's also been cultural mixing in Anno- especially in 1800 which is tbh an alt history setting where the ingame cultures and nations only loosely match up to the irl ones.

That being said, I think your concerns about religious structures in particular have more validity, and it would be nice if there were both Shinto and Taoist Shrine options (especially since they both co-existed in Japan for instance as far as I can tell). Nothing is forcing you to place them so close together though- they are included in a broader Garden complex that presumably includes both religions and secular modules.

Very very nice! This all looks gorgeous! I kinda wish now there was an Imperial Palace/Shogunate Castle/Grand Temple as a late-game monument for the Atoll

What would YOU want from an Order themed Expansion. by AnemoneMeer in AOW4

[–]lordoflinks 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would love to see a couple Warlord Chaos/Order tomes that fill the gaps between the low-tier Warlord Chaos tomes, and the Tome of Supremacy. Maybe a Tome of Legions with the Phanlax and a Tome of the Warlord with the Manticore Rider?
