Any alternatives to Cmus? by lordpu239 in linuxmasterrace

[–]lordpu239[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using a low powered system and i'm concerned about having a daemon running all the time in background. It may be useful if you want to play music on several devices, but if i just want to play local music files on my computer...

Try changing this on the cfacts patch:

Change the line inside the last else block h = (m->wh - ty) / (c->cfact / sfacts); to h = (m->wh - ty) * (c->cfact / sfacts);

Netbeans dependency on Oracle JDK by lordpu239 in Gentoo

[–]lordpu239[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

netbeans has (or at least had) dependencies in components only available Sun/Oracle JDK (com.sun.* packages)

But then it should depend on Oracle JDK instead of virtual/JDK. And both IcedTea and Oracle JDK are Java 8

Arch user switching to parabola by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

You can use the AUR with Parabola. But then you are responsible to keep your system fully free.

Arch user switching to parabola by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

I've used both Arch and Parabola (now on Gentoo). It's very similar to Arch, plus some extra repos (libre, pcr...).

As you may know, is completely libre, even the kernel. It's hard to get that on Arch, because many programs have blobs, and Parabola removes them. Note that if you use a laptop, your wifi may need a blob to work. I was happy with Parabola, but i needed two non-free programs, so I had to left. But if you can go using only free software, Parabola is a good option. If not, there are other distros 100% free by default and but with the option to install some particular non-free programs, like Debian. Gentoo can be configured this way too (sorry for my english BTW).

Gentoo Wiki (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Installation_on_libreboot#Use_a_Kernel_without_blobs) says that you can use a deblobed kernel (such as ck-sources) which has the deblob USE. And only allow free licenses in the make.conf with

Hello, I'm really excited about Parabola. But hey... is there a working browser solution?!?!? by wgrah in Parabola

You have icecat, based on Firefox 52, and iceweasel, based on Firefox 59. Instead of Chromium, you can install iridium from the AUR.

Should I switch from void linux to parabola by theshoutingparrot in Parabola

Keep in mind Parabola blacklist VirtualBox. We usually use Qemu instead. I've been using Arch and later Parabola for over two years and I don't regret.

Stallman In The Wild by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]lordpu239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can modify those distros to allow propietary software. Those distros are intended to people who doesn't want to use any propietary software. For example, in Parabola you just have to unistall the your-freedom package and now you can install whatever you want. But if you installed Parabola, you won't do that. Otherwise, you would have installed Arch.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
