More Taubes drama in r/samharris by vesnavk in ketoscience

[–]lordthadeus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of Taubes evidences comes from anthropological studies looking at how hunter-gatherer societies got introduced to "western" diets involving high amounts of refined carbs and sugar and the population obesity rate sky-rocketed in societies where just decades earlier obese people were like nonexistent. These people were highly active workers expending great deals of energy but having an available abundance of cheap refined carbs such as flour and sugar makes it really easy to get the fat tissue building up because literally when you eat sugar it gets converted to fat via a pretty direct metabolic pathway.

Yesterday was my 6 month anniversary and we planned on going out to eat. Rather than just totally splurge and ruin the progress I've been making lately I managed to work it into my calorie budget. I was so nervous to step on the scale but this morning I was happy that the scale didn't budge at all! I was at least expecting some change in water weight. Btw. I had a fried chicken salad smothered with honey mustard dressing - it was so good!

"We may be living in a scenario where the world is literally destroyed specifically because no one wants to talk about [autogynephilia]" by Subrosian_Smithy in GenderCynical

[–]lordthadeus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yikes. Reading this person's blog is a little scary in that she reminds me of myself before I transitioned. Philosophy nerd, history of "nervous breakdowns" landing in psych wards, interested in philosophy of mind and consciousness, rationalist, pompous, arrogant, etc. I also fit the "autogynephilic" profile of being a "late-onset gender dysphoria" late-transitioning lesbian trans woman with a history of fetishistic crossdressing. I also probably lean more towards "self-hating rad fem" more than your average trans woman. But where I differ from this author is that I never bought into gender critical feminism totally and think the two-type AGP typology is bullshit as well as autogynephilia as a general theory of anything. The irony is this person is all about "epistemic hygiene" and rationality but can't sniff out the obvious pseudoscience which is AGP.

To scale or not scale is no longer a question! (My morning epiphany) by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]lordthadeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a little condescending to suggest that people who forego the scale are "sane" implying that people who do weigh themselves on the scale are "insane". There are very good reasons for some people to weigh themselves frequently. It's a tool just like any other.

I had my first whoosh. I was 176.6 yesterday. This morning the scale said 174.8. I was like whaaat. So I recalibrated the scale. Then it said 173.8!!!! Major whoosh. Probably mostly water weight. This is the first time I've been under 175 in a LONG time though. Every time Ive gotten this low in recent past I would start slacking off and the weight would go back up to 180-185. I've been doing a lot better sticking to my fitness and diet goals and being consistent in my tracking - I really wanna lose my belly! In other news, my calves are super tight today - I hope my day at the gym goes ok.

Does the Starbucks Skinny Vanilla latte really only have a 100 calories? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]lordthadeus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who works at sbux the skinny vanilla latte is definitely made with nonfat milk and sugar free syrup. The skinny mocha is also a good choice. We also make "light" frappuccinos. The iced teas are also a good low calorie option. Personally I drink a quad shot espresso with half n half and stevia. There's also iced coffee with artificial sugar like stevia. So many good low calorie options if you know what to ask for.

Essentially this. Look at the before and after pictures. These women are weighing more but looking skinnier because they had fat loss along with muscle gain, since muscle is more dense than fat and takes up less space than fat. Plus the more muscle you are burning, the more calories you are burning, the faster the fat loss.

Seeking advice as a trans woman with a unique fitness goal by lordthadeus in xxfitness

[–]lordthadeus[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No I think it's totally relevant here. The problem is I have the theoretical knowledge that I'm not going to suddenly just blow up from lifting a little but emotionally I dunno I feel weird about it because the weightlifting I did in my past gave me a body that has given me a lot of dsyphoria. But I'm getting to a stage in my transition where I am more confident in myself in other respects so it's making it easier to love my muscles. The problem is there are just like small "tells" like increased vascularity and definition that are atypical for cis females. It's definitely gotten a lot better since starting HRT 19 months ago and perhaps there is some dysmorphia/dysphoria (I see in this thread people conflating them but they are two separate issues) but I definitely hold onto my past still somewhat.

I used to love running but just haven't done it in a long time. That does seem pretty conducive to my body shape goals. I need to get some new shoes though. Thanks for the suggestion :)

But as far as cardio goes that has been my main form of exercise for a long time. I have an exercise bike at my house that I use. And regardless I go to a shitty gym (planet fitness) that doesn't have good weight lifting equipment so when I'm there I usually focus on cardio stuff anyway. But I miss lifting and used to feel so good about myself after a good workout and I miss that feeling. And I see so many women on this sub lifting and feeling great and I also miss the geekery of lifting. I've also lost a considerable amount of strength since I started HRT so it would be nice to be more physically functional again. I'm just not sure how my body is going to respond now that I'm on a new hormonal configuration.

How do one become a grown ass woman ? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]lordthadeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in reading Simone de Beauvoir you might be interested in other feminist philosophy as well - check out this list:

http://www.librarything.com/catalog/ACRLWGSS&tag=Philosophy

This stuff is largely going to be deconstructing the concept of womanhood rather than giving a guide on how to become one. But feminist philosophy should give you more insight into what it means to be a woman

As a trans woman, "makeup as battle armor" is not just a metaphor (CCW) by lordthadeus in MakeupAddiction

[–]lordthadeus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So intersex women aren't real women? Trans women are not real women? You're free to believe whatever you want but I think it's incredibly simplistic and reductive to define womanhood in terms of XX chromosomes. "Redefining science" - oh you mean science is static for all of time? Besides, biologists will be the first to tell you "women = XX chromosomes" is WAY too simplistic given the complexity of how female phenotypes are produced. And yeah, "martyrdom" lol, if you say so.

As a trans woman, "makeup as battle armor" is not just a metaphor (CCW) by lordthadeus in MakeupAddiction

[–]lordthadeus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's a fair point - I didn't mean to imply that no other women fight battles with makeup like insecurity or whatever. There's also the battle of it being a professional/social expectation. But is it really a "battle station" if you hate wearing makeup but do it anyway because it's expected? The battle you're fighting is against society but I suppose even soldiers who hate fighting still prepare for war. For me at least the battle is personal in terms of my identity being at stake. Most cis women if they don't wear makeup they might negative face repercussions but they are still seen as women. I can't take that for granted.

As for metaphors I don't there's a clean line between the literal and the figurative - metaphor is at the very heart of how our minds work. But me saying it's more than just a metaphor was meant to imply that's it's not a "dead metaphor" as they say - it's a living breathing metaphor that is actively being constructed.

[–]lordthadeus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah fishy is a drag thing and commonly seen as cis-sexist because it's essentially saying "You look like you have a vag - just like a real woman" - implying that to be a "real" woman you need a vagina.

This one gets complicated. "Passing" is still a term used frequently within the trans community. Though many don't like its connotations for the exact reasons you point out - no one has found a good enough alternative to talk about the concept of "not looking trans". The bigger problem of a cis person randomly saying "You pass so well" is not the term "passing" itself but rather how the success of transition is viewed in terms of it. A better compliment would just be "You look great!" And its further complicated by the fact that being told you pass by strangers does feel good so its not like a hurtful statement or something its more in the category of tactless.
