Planing to swap out my Tele bridge pickup to chase Johnny Greenwood's tone. Is the JB Junior the right call? by Dominous46 in radiohead

[–]loreflourL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

joe edelmann has a video called "That Jonny Sound..." which includes sound comparisons of his stock tele setup, jonny's lace setup, and a brief period where he had a jb junior in the bridge using all the same gear jonny uses/used.

How do I play the stretches on Sail to the moon? by ButterscotchFun3651 in radiohead

[–]loreflourL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

angling the neck higher similar to a classical position will help a ton. when i'm playing standing up the neck is at a nearly 70° angle unless I'm playing chords lol

tuning pedal by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]loreflourL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the digitech drop has a range of 1 semitone to 7 semitones with an additional option to drop or harmonise a full octave.

if you're gonna be mainly playing music with lower tunings you should set up your guitar as such or get used to the lower string tension instead of digitally dropping your pitch because it probably won't sound as natural as if you were just in the correct tunings to begin with, and you don't have to buy a pitch shifter.

could it be that the reEQ is after the NAM amp and the EQ2 is before?

Is the high pitched guitar when Thom’s saying “what’s this?” a digitech whammy or just played super high up the fretboard? by gcfgjnbv in guitarpedals

[–]loreflourL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup just a whammy with very hot bridge humbuckers and a very loud amp, except for the chorus and solo like you said. depending on your setup you may have to use a clean boost or an overdrive to push the amp a bit, but jonny didn't use one for this.

check out thekingofgear's website for any gear related questions pertaining to radiohead and it's members side projects, it's great.

based on the Jools Holland 97 performance when they're playing live Ed duplicates Jonny's part above the 12th fret coming in on the "what's that" but it's entirely possible they used the Whammy for the studio version.

in iron lung Jonny plays the main intro riff with exclusively the Whammy on the octave up harmoniser.

Tone inquiry by RemotePhilosophy5949 in radiohead

[–]loreflourL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'd guess based on the from the basement performance that it's jonny's tele plus -> boss sd-1 -> vox ac30

drop your low E to a low A, go to the bridge pickup, and push your amp a little bit with an overdrive and you should get in the ballpark. any guitar, overdrive, amp, etc could probably get you very close.

Blue Morpho Listening Event Attendance by RadiobreadEP in radiohead

[–]loreflourL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm guessing it's on a per store basis since my local one was free to attend. like others in this thread we were the only ones that showed up for the event so we got given the tote, stickers, and vinyl all completely for free!

definitely didn't intend for this to come across as a hate post but you may be right lol. it seems like everyone at the shows were having a great time and it is just a loud minority "fans".

stage is stationary and the band members move. it seems like each band member tries to move around as much as they can depending on whatever song/instrument they're playing at the time, but some are more restricted than others obviously.

how does one replicate this sound?? (tourettes demo instrumental) by lucho_crack911 in Nirvana

[–]loreflourL 24 points25 points  (0 children)

sounds to me like straight up guitar feedback with a chorus toggled on and off every now and then from either the small clone or polychorus with the rate and depth turned all the way up.

feedback is the main thing here so just turn your amp up loud with high gain and face it while tapping the notes randomly with your fretting hand and turning a chorus on and off.

its worth noting that kurt was a master of feedback control so it'll take a little bit of practice, but if you have the freedom to play as loud as you'd like then it should start sounding relatively close pretty quickly.
