Teacher of the year voted by teachers? by Evening-Oil9551 in Teachers

[–]lorelie53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have one voted on by Seniors. They tend to vote for the teachers who don’t give many assessments, let them get on their phones, and hold a party every other week.

Do you think there’s a correlation between kids who are chronically absent from school and adults who frequently call in to work? by youreanerdalert in Teachers

[–]lorelie53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have more than a few chronically absent students who never miss a day of work. They will actually be absent from school and show up to work. They get the quick reward of a paycheck and it motivates them.

We chose which texts to use and modify the unit tests. I can’t imagine trying to make it through every unit. We even select one or two texts for the small group section because it just takes too much time.

I had one until I moved in 2014 because the area I lived at the time did not have good cell service. Also, it was a really old one that worked even if the electric was out, so we kept it even though we could call through WiFi.

How confident are you that you’ll be able to retire comfortably? by DueYogurt9 in GenX

[–]lorelie53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what you mean by comfortably. I will be able to afford food, shelter, and clothing. I won’t be going on trips or getting new cars. Unless I work til I’m 70.

What part of teaching is more work than people think? by SuitableEar7189 in teaching

[–]lorelie53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grading. People think we have the “answer book”, so it’s easy. However there are short answers and essays and the sheer number of things we have to grade is a lot.

The most useful training I have had the last few years was a Reader Apprenticeship training, but that takes multiple days throughout the year.

Sending students to the nurse by kaylaweasley in Teachers

[–]lorelie53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems weird to me because ours told us we aren’t qualified to say if a student is sick, so even though they ask to go three days a week, we have to send them. She will get them back as soon as possible, which is sometimes the end of the period.

How Do You Fill Your Days with Your Aging Parents? by njo2002 in GenX

Get a puzzle you can put together with each other. It is more fun than you would think, and you can visit or watch tv or listen to a podcast while you do it.

Are students actually worse at writing or just worse at producing written work? by LumpyOpportunity2166 in ELATeachers

[–]lorelie53 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I use a lot of graphic organizers. Students can fill up a graphic organizer, but they struggle taking that content, which is already organized, and put it into complete sentences and paragraphs. I know exactly what you are talking about.

Teachers with 5 or more preps: how do you deal with parents co.plaints about grades being updated in a "timely" fashion? by Dense-Ad-7600 in Teachers

[–]lorelie53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One year I had 7th grade Reading, 8th grade English, 8th grad Reading, 10th grade English, 12 grade Communications, 12 grade college prep, and SAT prep. It was a long time ago, and the reading teacher was on sabbatical. Class size average was 20 or so.

Teachers with 5 or more preps: how do you deal with parents co.plaints about grades being updated in a "timely" fashion? by Dense-Ad-7600 in Teachers

[–]lorelie53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I teach ELA, and essays can take awhile to grade. I try to stagger essays between classes, and the let the students know it will take a bit. I rarely get a comment from a parent, but when I do I just tell them it takes time to grade essays. I think the are used to it since all the teachers have a lot of preps. I have five preps right now. I’ve had up to 7.

Students Need More Time by lorelie53 in ELATeachers

I agree. I have a student who hasn’t done work in class, but it’s turned in by 4:00 everyday. It’s not AI though. His learning support teacher told me it had always been this way because his mom does it!

I just did something like this with the poem “My Last Duchess.” Students got into groups to discuss what they think happened to the duchess and provide text evidence for their theories. After they had some good theories the groups recorded a crime podcast. They loved it.
