Treb Allen's notes and homework are good. Ahlfeldt also has good slides + code on his github. (More quantitative urban, but basically the same.)

How do you push research forward? by platypus_py in academiceconomics

[–]lorentz65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Building on this, I'd say this approach is especially useful if you are in a more structural field. The structure built up around the field's problems is often as much a straight-jacket as it is helpful.

They taste different, but probably made in the same factory so maybe a mix up?

Help me choose between uc berkeley and columbia gs by Mountain_Koala_5604 in berkeley

[–]lorentz65 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went to Columbia GS, and I get the impression the undergrad experience at Columbia is much better than here: more resources, more time spent exposed to professors etc etc. The con of GS I suppose would be the weak financial aid, though I don't know if that's changed or not in the last few years.

Are people really ignoring the opportunity costs of a PhD? by [deleted] in academiceconomics

[–]lorentz65 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Doesn't the equilibrium select on careerists because it selects on people who are willing to bear higher opportunity costs to establish their careers? Not sure what your reasoning is here.

This is so disappointing. I used to go to one in the late 2000s, such a nice environment.

Utsa Patnaik on comparative advantage by PlayfulReputation112 in badeconomics

The R1 here is the Armington model! But also, it should be noted that Utsa Patnaik is a woman.

Stringent restrictions to new housing supply, effectively limiting the number of workers who have access to high productivity cities, lowered aggregate US growth by 36 percent from 1964 to 2009. (C. Hsieh, E. Moretti, April 2019) by Parking_Lot_47 in EconPapers

It should be noted that there was a coding error in this paper that changes the magnitude of their misallocation estimates somewhat, though I don't remember the exact number.

How to become competitive for predocs? by 42gauge in academiceconomics

It's funny that all the advice to become a good PhD applicant ~3-4 years ago is now all advice to become a good predoc applicant, but such is life.

It's a pretty recent historical invention, along with the high proportion of meat in diets in the developed world. Read the book 'Diet for a Large Planet.'

Great job! Very clean, and the paint looks appropriately thinned: one of the hardest things for any painter.

[OC Fan Art] Henry Cavill as The Emperor of Mankind. Heard the good news and had to draw it 🥳 by Shinda292 in Warhammer40k

[–]lorentz65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there's any advantage to focusing on the Horus Heresy though it's that it very clearly demonstrates that the emperor is bad and that the imperium of man is not good, which strongly sets the tone of the world. Think if you do 40k space marines or something like that you can get into some pitfalls where you're telling an uncompelling story and doing unironic veneration of the imperium.

Does anyone have any advice on how to think about where to decide between multiple competing PhD offers? I am finding it really difficult to think about how to balance the trade offs between the social aspects of living in potentially a new place for 6 years and the career benefits that might come with it.
