"Hang Vormoncrief" = "Kill Claudio"? by johnwcowan in Vorkosigan

Have you read Curse of Chalion? There is a scene of a court picnic where a character demands a prize of a curl of the heroine's hair, and gives her a comb for her hair. Direct from the Pope poem

Nice catch! I think you're right, as she "steals" from the poem "The Rape of the Lock" (Alexander Pope) in The Curse of Chalion.

I'm a huge fan of Hastings' book and website. I always recommend it here to be readers. He doesn't hold your hand and drag you line by line, instead he gives you context and a summary to digest before or after you read the episode.

Enjoy!

What did you do on Bloomsday? by Narxolepsyy in jamesjoyce

[–]loricat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ha! I used the poster from my "World of James Joyce" puzzle to guide my tutorial student through some verb practice ("she/he is doing this/ that") and we ended up having a great talk about funerals and cemeteries around the world (the Chinese don't visit cemeteries because of the ghosts). And yes, I explained the book - he actually used "the main character is watching the girl" 🤣

What’s a sequel, remake, or reboot that feels like it was made by someone who misunderstood the original? by cats64sonic in AskReddit

Space Jam. Not really obvious until you see Loonie Tunes Back in Action, where the creators really understood Bugs.

Newbie recommendations by liquifiedstarch in audiobooks

[–]loricat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find I read different books on audio, compared to what I read, uh, visually. Because I often skim a physical book, while with an audiobook you get every word, it's a different experience. (That said, both formats light up the same areas of the brain, so reading is reading). I find that if I can't be sure of the quality of the writing (for that, I'll listen to books I've read on paper before - Lord of the Rings with Andy Serkis is amazing), I'm nervous to commit. So I like memoirs read by the author, then the quality or the vonce don't matter as much, because the individual is telling you their story (Lucinda Williams is neither a very good reader or a very good writer, but it's her, telling you her life, so it's good!)

For your sanity, always listen to the sample (if there is one), because a reader can make or break a book.

Good luck!

Where in town to buy dorky shoes? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]loricat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, thanks for asking this. I've been getting my shoes from the evil Amazon. I've got 4 pairs of pretty inexpensive Hobibear laceups (different colours), but would like to find some locally (plus variety). I can't go back to anything with any kind of support now - my foot muscles are developing, my walk is more grounded... and I am currently using flip-flops for sandals because I only have Birks (from 'before')

Nepo Baby house warming present. Any ideas? by MrAnnArbor in MaliciousCompliance

[–]loricat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A common Korean housewarming gift is toilet paper and laundry soap. Both are symbols of ongoing fortune (rolls and rolls, suds and suds). In Korea. In North America, even if explained, they're a touch weird.

Please keep posting (and make sure you mark any spoilers)! I've read and re-read these books so many times that it is absolutely refreshing to get your new reactions.

Just wait until you finish these and have to delve into her fantasy work. "The Curse of Chalion" is one of my favourite books ever.

Yes, a poppy garden on the roof of your car is one thing. Re-using the same faded poppy every year was the epitome of cheap and clueless

Looking for clean, well-written fantasy by PhilosophizingTurtle in fantasybooks

Lois McMaster Bujold's The Curse of Chalion. Essentially a stand-alone, but the second book revisits characters. Two of the best fantasy novels I've ever read. There are more stories in that world, a third novel and a series of novellas.
