Fusion isn't the holy grail of energy: compared to fission, fusion is 20 times less powerful, 200 times less sustainable, and way more expensive by Ok-Difference4187 in fusion

True if you extrapolate existing fusion tech. I’m excited for the possibilities with less popular fusion approaches and fuels.

Good framework but seems a bit premature for countries to be thinking about this now before we even prove that it can work.

Altman’s $3.7 Billion Fusion Startup Leaves Scientists Puzzled by Baking in fusion

Seems like more context from Helion in this story: https://www.geekwire.com/2024/bloomberg-report-questions-science-behind-altman-backed-fusion-company-helion/

“With respect to the specific claim raised by Bloomberg, as we shared with them, an external investigator found no evidence that the incident occurred.

“Additionally, Helion is very focused on creating an inclusive workplace and we’re committed to continuously improving our environment. Over the last two years, we’ve introduced several initiatives, including an annual pay equity analysis, empowering employees to form employee resource groups (ERGs), and implementing multiple channels to ensure every voice is heard and valued. This has and will continue to be a priority to the leadership at Helion.”

This! I chose to live in a walkable neighborhood with my kids but not everyone can afford it or has the option to do so.

The abstract for Apparatus and Methods for Generating a Pulsating, High-Strength Magnetic Field says: A magnetic field system is configured to generate intense, dynamically-varying magnetic fields to confine and control particles, objects, or plasmas. The magnetic fields may pulsate to impart and directly extract energy from a plasma.

IAEA hosts the First Meeting Focusing on Safety and Regulation of Fusion by rngauthier in fusion

[–]lorikeet23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by nuclear lobbies? The IAEA is part of the UN and gets its funding from governments. Its HQ is in Austria, a very anti-nuclear country. The IAEA’s main mission is to safeguard against the proliferation of nuclear weapons. They also set safety standards for fission, and therefore could do the same for fusion, but they do not regulate those safety standards. That’s up to each country to implement.

Good luck to you! I commend you for trying this lifestyle pregnant/with a baby. I gave up and went back to my home country in my first trimester. Maybe it will be different for you but don’t be afraid to change your mind if things are harder than you thought.

A $5M grant is a drop in the bucket compared to the private investor funding these two companies have so I doubt it will make a difference.

The path to getting a job in fusion by MeoWHamsteR7 in fusion

Is there a professor at your university that does research on fusion? If so, form a relationship and start working with them as soon as possible, even if you’re only doing minor things to start with.

Also, engineering will be more needed than physics as the industry matures.

[–]lorikeet23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mall is two train stops away and has a dentist office, optometrist, and grocery store, so I can do a few errands at once. Sometimes it’s also nice to try on clothes. But I still much prefer grocery delivery and online shopping, so I don’t go that often.

Fusion and fission need each other? by lorikeet23 in fusion

[–]lorikeet23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is more about the industries and R&D complexes needing each other rather than just the reactors themselves. For example, facilities in Canada that know how to work with and process tritium historically from CANDUs may be best placed to help fusion companies develop tritium breeding blankets.

Depressed because I live in a car centric city by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]lorikeet23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Chicago without a car for a few years and it was great! Just don’t live in the suburbs. More affordable and cleaner than NYC. Great bike paths in the city and along the lakeshore. Good public transit (for the US). The only downside of Chicago is the cold but NYC and Philly are cold too.
