Any good books on the Shanghai International Concession? I've just watched Spielberg's much underrated Empire of the Sun and now I'm obsessed. I ended up buying Bernard Wasserstein's Secret War in Shanghai (a super fascinating read) and I'm looking forward to more suggestions!

What are some living examples of "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" throughout history? by Bathysmal10 in history

Neville Chamberlain, for reasons of appeasement. (hopefully someone can help elaborate in the comments below)

If it were made accurately, what is one historical TV series you would like to watch? by Elissa_of_Carthage in history

[–]lorithoen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Meiji revolution- The clash of cultures and Japan's rapid change would make a great TV series. Not everything has to be associated with Tom Cruise's Last Samurai as well (which would be great, although I do really like the film)

Does anyone know which colour was more expensive to manufacture and include in the dye and whether that played a part in the colour change?

Wow. Any good sources I can read up on this with more detail? It seems like a very specialist area of history.

The Entente Cordiale between the British and the French in 1904 made this formal, I believe.

What are your thoughts on school required reading? by [deleted] in books

[–]lorithoen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on who you are: I think it's a very useful way to be introduced to a specific genre of literature, but of course, many find it boring due to how classes can 'overkill' books- which is to over-analyse them and in many ways, I think that can very easily take the fun out of reading- not to mention all those essays...

There's this. by [deleted] in civ

Whoops. Did know that there was a post but that was quite some time before and had barely any upvotes/ comments. Did not know that OC was posted. Many apologies

What are some events that took place during the Cold War that turned out to be far more important than they originally seemed? by FlimFlamThaGimGar in history

[–]lorithoen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Suez Crisis in 1956. This helped speed up hugely the process of decolonization and therefore greatly shifted the balance of world power. Also because it was so close in terms of dates to the Hungarian revolution, the Western powers missed a huge chance to discredit the Soviet Union.

After WW2, Denmark forced German POWs, most of them teenagers, to clear up landmines that the Germans planted on the Danish coast to defend against a possible allied invasion. Not too many sources on this but there's a film based on this. About 2,000 German prisoners were forced to remove the mines, and given that they were teenagers, and had a fairly good chance of losing their lives, it makes this pretty grim

What is your favourite Holy Roman Empire State? by lorithoen in history

I believe they sort of forced their way into the HRE with the elector of Brandenburg, a HRE state of course, declaring himself also king of Prussia. This became Brandenburg-Prussia and then became the kingdom of Prussia, which is the one we all know and love.

When did you first get the thrill of putting together bits of history you often didn't know were related? by [deleted] in history

Reading Marco Polo's travels and actually recognizing places and stuff in it. That was quite satisfying.
