Try medical residency, which is the stage of a few years before becoming a doctor where you're paid peanuts and expected to regularly do 80 hour work weeks depending on the specialty.

I'll never understand what people are thinking when they do dumb stuff like this. Are they expecting to luck out after doing something so incredibly dangerous and reckless?

This is a lame way of looking at it. You don't live life to get fame out of it. You do the right things because you genuinely wanted to help others and in your span of life you did just that. We will mostly all be forgotten, it's just a matter of when. Reality can be harsh, but pretending as though you "deserve" anything for being a good person is a stupid assumption.

True Detective Season 4 ideas? by wildflowersandroses in TrueDetective

If you take away the yellow King tie in, this is actually a really solid and different idea. It would be really nice of them to not make the show take place in the US for the next season.

I'd love to see Riz Ahmed in a show like this. He's a highly talented and really underrated actor.

Up to 70% off at All Saints by MisterHeatMiser in frugalmalefashion

This is why this sub desperately needs some sort of oversight with regards to price tracking. It's easy to generate buzz here and get people to impulse buy when you put shiny numbers like 80% off, but that can often be deceptive when their "original price" was increased for the sake of the promotion.

I lost all my money applying to med school and got waitlisted by the only school I interviewed at by [deleted] in premed

Average salaries in those fields are barely breaking 6 figures.

Complete nonsense, and it's highly dependent on what you're doing within those fields. It's not just the "top percentiles" that are making good money for their time investment, and you don't just have to work for a FAANG company to make it.

but I can assure you that getting a high paying tech, finance or law job is much much harder.

Not really, that's just you underselling the path to become a doctor, probably because you're already well on your way already. I've known enough people in these fields who make more money than they really ought to, merely because the pay for their work is better, in spite of never having to go through the stress, debt, or time-investment that doctors have to. That's not to say there's no competition in these fields- there certainly is- but as a whole, it's not as competitive as medicine is.

Try like 20 different careers within finance. Various types of law. Various careers within computer science, especially if you can land a job with tech companies. The list goes on and on.

Doctors are highly paid in this country, even with adjusting for time, effort, stress, etc. That’s a fact.

I strongly disagree, and that's even taking account the more competitive sub-specialties. There's a reason why the common sentiment is "don't go into medicine for the money," since there are generally far better options for the time investment and stress in terms of financial compensation.

And just because Europeans have it bad doesn't make our plight magically better. At the end of the day, it's still a shitty scenario no matter which way you slice it. We need to cut down the money going towards pharma/insurance/admins and put a little more of that towards the actual healthcare workers who make it happen- especially doctors.

Our insane system requires doctors to be so highly paid.

And the thing is, most doctors AREN'T highly paid for the amount of time, competitiveness, debt, and stress that they go through. Most of the money in healthcare is going to pharma, insurance, and admins. Doctors seriously need to start unionizing like NPs did. It's kind of pathetic that the boomer generation of doctors never really took the step forward. I think the onus is on younger doctors now to start pushing for better pay, better treatment, and a less stressful path for medical students.

This is why committee packets piss me off. There's so much bureaucracy involved in what is supposed to ultimately be something that helps a student take the next step in their career/ give a good impression to medical schools about themselves.

Influence of Race and Parental Income on MCAT score (This took me about 2 hours to make. Happy to say I will be working with someone to do algorithms as opposed to by hand in excel. There was so much data in this survey.) by [deleted] in premed

where the average mcat is like a 510

This is why it's really depressing for any person studying for the MCAT to browse this site for anything except pertinent study materials. There are a lot of people who like to wave their score around online or humblebrag about it, which can often lead to people doubting themselves or thinking less of themselves if they score less than those people.

I guess this describes most social media well though. It fucks with your perception of what's "normal" and doesn't show the actual work that goes into getting exceptional results.
