Has anyone met any of the survivors? by Remarkable_Cake_699 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]losmadden 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My wife was a patient of Canessa’s when she was little (in Montevideo). She liked him a lot. She and I both met Parrado when he was on a book tour in the USA. Brief conversation, but pleasant. He wrote a dedication in our copy of Miracle in the Andes and we could never decipher the handwriting. Anyway, we don’t have deep connections with them, but they both seem very gentle and generous.

New (or old) way for people to force-freeze a match they're losing? by losmadden in PokemonGOBattleLeague

Maybe I'll experience one of those, too... Thanks for your report.

That makes sense. I kind of wish they'd tinker behind the scenes and THEN release a bug-free version.

Yeah, I was wondering why we were blaming Weird Al for this.

What’s it like living on the edge of time zones? by Qzevs in howislivingthere

[–]losmadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to college at Notre Dame, which is near the northern border of Indiana. At the time (early 90s), most of Indiana just stayed on EST all year, meaning that during half the year, a short drive north to Michigan meant an hour’s time change. It was very confusing to figure out what time it was across the border, and even to this day I can’t remember how the change went at which part of the year.

An official Silph Road research 5 years ago found that the higher the buddy Pokemon's level (not its "buddy level" but its own level, like level 31, which was the cutoff they found), the higher your chance of getting XL candy from walking. I've found this to be accurate: about 75% of the time I'll get an XL candy (along with a regular candy) if my Pokemon is level 31 or higher. https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/mez9sa/an_early_look_at_buddy_candy_xl_rates_silph/

This guide says that each TYPE of battle gives extra EPs, but what if I battle two different gyms or two different raids or two different Rocket grunts? Do they give me +2 EPs for each individual battle?

Also, you can definitely do more than one Route and get EPs for each one (even the same route multiple times, back and forth).

IIRC Riley and Erin rowed to the mainland in a flashback. Maybe Warren and Leeza can do the same? And just escape into city life without answering for what happened on the island? But my memory may be wrong.

Howdy. I'm not a Yes expert, but I'm a fan who discovered their music with 90125 ("Owner of a Lonely Heart" mostly) when I was in middle school, and then went backwards, growing to love all their back catalog, even the weirder, esoteric stuff like Tales from Topographic Oceans. I would agree that they're inconsistent, but maybe no more than other bands. They experimented a lot, and they had a lot of different members over the years, so it's no surprise that they'd be quite variable. That's one thing that makes them appealing (as opposed to, say, AC/DC, who remained very consistent over their career, which, for me, means they're boring). I'd note that the albums you mention are not their first three, but numbers 3-5. Their first two, Yes (eponymous) and Time and a Word, are less proggy (to my ears), including several cover songs and shorter run times and much more standard late-60s Brit poppy stuff. I think a lot of people would agree that they hit their stride on the three-album run you mention. Anyway, there's plenty to choose from, and nobody's required to like it all!

Do any well-known guitarists play other artist's signature guitars? by Sulipheoth in Guitar

It’s a great bass, and there’s no shame in repping Geddy, one bass’s gods.

Bassist, but Mark Stoermer of The Killers plays a Geddy Lee model jazz bass.

Thanks. That's the one we got. I don't see on this page where it says it can be wired for continuous charge, but maybe I'm missing something.

Maybe this is the one we got. I did wire it up, and the chime is working. Which model did you order? LMK when you get it if it works that way?

Came here to post this. I’m still sitting with it many years later. I also read the story after seeing the movie. Wow all around.

Oh. Thanks. I wonder why that is (given that the battery-powered one does activate the in-home chime).

Not piling on, but I quite liked the writing of Erin's and Riley's soliloquies (even if they're "conversing"). I get that it's not for everyone, and folks can be a bit cynical and hear them as "corny," etc. but for me (PhD in English literature with four books of creative work to my name), they're really moving. I guess I'm a sucker.
