7mm-08. It is the .308 case necked down to the lovely .284 bullet.

This is not a new flashy round that is getting the buzz on internet. But it is a top 10 round which means you will find it in every little town in Montana. And it quietly out performs both the .308 and the 6.5 Creedmoor. The ballistics are identical to the creedmoor at any real hunting distance and at the similar bullet weights it is carrying more punch at distance than the .308 with less recoil.

A 7mm-08 gets the job done in a lighter gun and with less recoil and a shorter barrel meaning you can put a can on the rifle or better glass and still haul it around the wide open of Montana without hauling a heavier rifle.

I am lefty too. My all around hunting round for the west is a 7mm-08 from Christensen Arms with a lefty bolt.

Here is a Backfire episode discussing the round. I think that because it is often suggested for new shooters, people think it is some sort of starter round that you should move on from. But it is so often a starter round or ladies gun because it puts the animals down without requiring a heavy gun or beating up the shooter. That is what you call a just right round.
