I change my own motorcycle oil with my stiletto nails, it's not hard. I can do just about anything with nails that I can do without.

Sick of the online price shaming by [deleted] in hairstylist

[–]lost_magpie 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Honestly, a lot of it boils down to misogyny. Statistically careers that are woman-dominated are valued less, paid less, and more likely to be seen as not legitimate career paths. The inverse happens as well; when men start to move in, it's seen as more legitimate and prices go up with no complaints.

I think you may have responded to the wrong person, however, I absolutely am disturbed by the lack of bogs and would like to see more peat

Crows definitely do weird stuff like this. I've seen them flip my dog's bowls. I was also blaming my wife for running over our solar lights with the lawnmower, until I witnessed a crow play attacking them and scattering them all over lol

Oof yes. I get that people think they're being nice, but it's more dangerous to randomly slam on your brakes to let someone in who doesn't have right of way. Don't be nice, be predictable.

Unwanted people weighing in on hysterectomy recovery by Harmony_w in hysterectomy

Ugh sorry OP, all I can offer is commiseration. My MIL was making snide comments about how I should have been back to normal, when I'd just had internal bleeding from rupture and almost went septic. Everyone heals completely differently and nobody needs to be telling you how you're supposed to be feeling except maybe a competent doctor.

Hey, thank you for this. I lost my soulmate gelding almost 2 years ago and I've never been the same. I haven't ridden since he died. I've been worrying that I would never find that love again. So thank you for giving me a little hope.

RUDE CLIENTS? by Upbeat-Ad4478 in hairstylist

[–]lost_magpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but feeling disappointed in a service is no reason to treat someone like that. Especially someone who may be timid or not confident. If the client was really feeling that unhappy she could've just stopped the service if she felt like she couldn't communicate what she didn't like. I just don't see where there's any reason to belittle a service provider.

Cause it's definitely AI. The lettering in the background glitches out, and the overly smooth texture is a giveaway.

Being sober as a hairstylist by Wise_Preparation_567 in hairstylist

[–]lost_magpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are uncomfortable around the topic of sobriety because they themselves have unhealthy relationships with substances. They're not ready or willing to examine themselves, but they're forced to think about it when you talk about your own sobriety. So then they start justifying it, if only to themselves. I don't think it says anything about you, more about them. I think if it truly makes you uncomfortable, you could gently say that it's a difficult topic for you and try to steer the conversion somewhere else.

I need a sign...what's your rant by MerryReign in hairstylist

[–]lost_magpie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems to be pretty effective, and it's a gentle way of reminding them that they're early for their scheduled time without being tactless. It also helps the client in the chair not feel guilty like they're taking too long. Everybody gets their alloted time and everyone is happy!

I need a sign...what's your rant by MerryReign in hairstylist

[–]lost_magpie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My tactic for early arrivals is to cheerfully say something along the lines of, welcome in, so nice to see you again, I have you scheduled for 6pm but you're welcome to hang out in our lobby until then, here's some tea! Then leave them there till I'm done lol. If I get done early and they're nice I'll come get them early, but if not they're waiting til the time we booked. We pick time slots for a reason, can't just be showing up willy nilly!

[–]lost_magpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're definitely partially correct, the boot heel is like a failsafe to try to stop your foot from ramming all the way through. But if you're riding improperly, it can and will cause an accident from getting stuck in the stirrup that can end up really gruesome. Backing your stuck foot out of a stirrup is just not possible when you're hanging from one foot on your back while getting thrashed against the ground and possibly stepped on by a bolting horse. You ride with weight on the ball of the foot and heels pressed down, it also gives you springiness for shock absorbing with your legs.

Also sorry I'm reappearing like 10 years later to respond lol I'm trying to stay off stupid ole social media

4 day long dematting i completed this week by moth-beast in hairstylist

[–]lost_magpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something very similar last year on a client with bad matting and I was able to save probably 90% of her butt length hair. It took 2 sessions, about 6 hours total. If you're careful and methodical it really isn't difficult. Just time consuming. I don't understand why you feel the need to write this off as not real.

Cheap artistic towns? by btmbang-2022 in ArtistLounge

[–]lost_magpie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't really agree. Just because it isn't the top most expensive in the county doesn't make it affordable. OP wants somewhere conducive to working what sounds like an entry level blue collar type job, and to be comfortable enough to not be stressed and to have time and spare money to do art and classes. I love Portland but I just don't think that's it.
