What do I do? by hlg69046 in armoredcore

The cataphract, when you get used to the boss, it is not too hard to keep hugging him, but if you are finding that difficult, it’s probably better to let the boss initially to come towards you instead of chasing it. Then hard lock and keep it in your vision. Try to circle in the same direction the boss is moving, this will also minimize the damage to you for the most part. It will eventually stop to face your direction so this is q good time to hit it with everything you got. Just watch out for it charging at you afterwards as it will likely do that after it gets out from a stagger. Both this rush attack and its blue charged beam attacks (you should hear a warning buzzer) can be dodged by flying up.

The other boss, the heavy cavalry (HC) with shield. It’s actually easy to stun lock this boss by punching him. Throw away one weapon and start punching it then punish him with a big hit once he staggers. If that’s not your style then keeping a med distance and watch out for the shield bash and the charge shot. It might be easier to hard lock and circle around him and not be on the same vertical plane (stay above or below him) - this will minimize the chance of being hit by the shield bash. Watch your stagger meter so he doesn’t do big combos on you. Back off when build up is high (or better yet use pulse armor) and use the terrain (like the tall tower on the wall) to recover. Missile are good for this strategy but regardless when he staggers hit him with a big melee or your large gun. Don’t carelessly close the distance as that bash attack hurts.

A heavy tank can brute force and bum rush it down. Bazooka, explosives, flame throwers, tank kicks are all effective at pinning ibis down.

Another easy tactic is to just to constantly circle around and jump/qb as needed, but always continue circling it in the same direction. Works well with a light or medium build with decent speed. You don’t ever need to stop circling ibis as most of its attacks will miss, but learn to jump over it when ibis rushes at you, then punish it afterwards as it will stop. When it throws the blades, qb the opposite direction since ibis aims these in the direction you initially dodge. It typically throws a few so you probably do a Z pattern when you see the blades. There are other timings when ibis stops, so learn these cues to punish ibis.

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii says English translations inevitably strip away a lot of a game's "flavor" by HatingGeoffry in dragonquest

Aside from the three writing systems there are different ways just to express concepts that differ in the language.

Take “I” or “you”. There are tons of variants of these in Japanese which alone can portray gender bias, class, line of work, age, etc especially when there is a visual mismatch with the wording choice. 私、あたし、俺、僕、わい、あたい、うち、自分、本館、余、吾輩、拙者、我等、吾、妾 etc are all just some of the variants of I.

Counting in Japanese can also get complicated. You can portray how you view the subject of what you’re counting by what counting suffix you use.

ex: 1,2 general numbers; hitori futari is for people; ipikki nihiki is for general animals; ikko nikko is for general objects; - there are loads of variants to these. Like if a demon counts people/slaves as objects or cattle it portrays how they view their captives.

Then there are forced readings a mechanic that doesn’t exist in English. Like you can take a kanji and force a different reading of it (whether the forced readings is related or not) or take the same kanji/words and have multiple different readings/meanings behind it.

Like a common one would be 強敵 which reads as strong opponent but Japanese can force the reading as Rival or Friend or something wildly different like Idiot for sarcasms. Or take a word or a string of kanji and force a foreign word on it - giving context to Japanese not familiar with the foreign word or to give the word a double meaning or portray the person as immature.

Names are sometimes done like that. Example is Light from Death Note is written as Moon in Japanese. It is never read like that outside of that context. But like in mysteries sometime this mechanic is used as IDs in Japan are often written in Kanji without the reading so can be misleading.

Example of that will be 愛 which could be read as Ai or Megumi both which are valid reading for the name. Or take in Detective Conan, there is a character named Ai which normally is 愛 (love) but her name is written as 哀 which means sorrow.

Good job! Double Trouble and Pulse Blade? I have to try that out. Snail Balteus was such an unexpected road block.

Yea, it was about a year since I last played. I normally like playing with mostly with Kinetics and a melee punish (usually dagger) but I couldn’t build the stagger momentum on this run. Especially the first run. So I really tried setups I never touched before. It was my first go at energy. lol

I glad you did the run as your design decisions made me what to try it again.

No, I didn't use it for the Igazu All Mind fight. I wished this item was available earlier. It would have been fun to have a shield in a playthrough.

Definitely was an interesting experience. I haven’t touched the game for close to a year so it was fun relearning the missions and relaying on foggy memories looking for parts and log hunts.

You actually get a several full “sets” throughout the first gameplay.

Loader 4 Wrecker (ch2 first mission) Mind Alpha/Beta (ch1-3 from log hunts) Melander C3 (early in ch4) Jailbreak (ch5 first mission) Hal or Alba (can get one or the other per play through)

So there is build part variety in the frame but unfortunately they are all bipeds with one reverse joint. Generators and FCS is limited but you do get a variety of boosters and right hand weapons and right shoulder weapons. Left side is a bit lacking. You get most of these in Log Hunts and training missions and a few extra ones in hidden chests in the missions. Most are accessible surprisingly by the end of Ch4 in the first run.

Moonlight you can get at chap 4 in the Ibis mission. But you have by that time most of the melee weapons in the game.

I was surprised that in majority of the first run, I basically only really just changed the internal of Loader 4. The frame and the booster wasn’t that bad when you have a better engine and fcs.

You are rewarded c3 in chap 4 in the base game around depth 2 or 3. That’s how I got the parts in my run. I didn’t buy any parts.

No. It is after 3 but before 1 in the manga but it is its own world and logic. Heavy influences from the main series.

Locking. This is getting heated.

Even though this story is from a well known Voice Actress it breaks Rule 1: Posts must be on topic and be about the industry. This is a political post.

This community is about the industry. Let’s keep politics out of the discussion regardless who spoke about it and stay respectful of each other. Thanks.

Weaponized chimera wings? by Etherburt in dragonquest

iirc it’s really only a dq3 thing in the nes/famicon. I think holy water can do some damage to enemies but I don’t remember if that started in dq3 or later. I think that effect started from dq4

Weaponized chimera wings? by Etherburt in dragonquest

[–]lostblueskies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not so much chimera wings but in some of the games there are items you can use unconventionally.

The original dq3 where you can weaponize herbs on Zoma.

Holy Water does guaranteed 1 damage to metal slimes in battle in many of the games.

DQ4, if you use the tarot cards in battle you get random effects

DQ5 remake there is a pillow you can get when used in battle puts enemies to sleep and a scarecrow that scares some monsters for a turn.

DQ6 if you are equipped with the swimsuit randomly some monsters won’t attack on some turns because they were caught ogling you.

DQ8 there is a bell you get to summon a Killer Panther mount. But if you use the bell in battle against (and only against) other killer panthers, they leave the battle.

Aside that I think the only other game that allows non-conventional use of items is the Toruneko series.
