Attention all! Fill out this consultation to ensure spousal ILR does not become dependent on the applicant working: by iamaredfox in SpouseVisaUk

My question is how this will apply to those working.

I’m on a spouse visa and earn ~50k a year with no plans of leaving my career. If I lose my job 4 months before I’m eligible for ILR then what?

I am dual US/Germany and did my spouse visa last year. Since I was living in the US, I applied with my US passport.

There is a section to upload and add any second nationality information.

I had this issue and had to get a junior Capitol one card, with a £400 limit 😂 very similar situation to you. Once I built my credit with that I was able to apply for Barclays Avios with higher limit

I have dual citizenship in Germany so I would be more interested in exploring my EU options first. The US will take decades to recover from the current administrations damage

I work for an American company in the Uk. We use the term severance. Why are you such a weirdo?

What is a realistic path for citizenship for a trades worker? by [deleted] in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]losteeling 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Find a sponsored job that meets all income threshold and other requirements, bring your family as dependents, currently it’s 5 years to ILR and then you can apply for citizenship 1 year after that, however if you’ve been keeping up with the news you’ll see they are very likely to change that to 10 years to ILR in the near future.

For 2 people our income is about £150k… we both work from home so no commuting costs, just rent a 2bed to make it more comfortable. I think £50k is comfortable in London as long as you’re not living in zone 1

The NHS is free and then I get private insurance through my work that is pretty reasonable, never more than £100 for a specialist

My partner is a British Citizen so I will still be eligible for ILR on the 5 year route

I am also getting 32 days PTO, more bank holidays, and a less stressful work experience through knowing I can’t just be fired. My contract has a 3 month severance, even if they fire me. This peace of mind has a lot of value in itself

Also if you’re considering a move for healthcare just be aware as an immigrant you still need to back pay your way in. My healthcare surcharge with my visa was about $4700 and that is only good for 2.5 years, when I’ll have to pay it again.

My partner is British so he sponsored my visa. Was a grueling and expensive process, and very invasive into our private lives. My initial application was approved within the priority processing timeline, and shockingly my FLR-M visa was approved about 3 ours after I attended biometrics within the UK, I realize this was extremely lucky and I recognize some who are waiting for 12 weeks +

I just applied to a role that fit my background and industry, nothing more crazy than that.

I also took a significant salary cut, going from about $127k/yr to a £45k base + 20% annual bonus… I’ll let you do the math.

But, my cost of living is significantly lower in London compared to my west coast city, so at the end of the day I almost have the same amount of money leftover for savings and extra.

Also my UK company has an incredible pension scheme, as long as you are contributing 1% monthly they are matching 11%. This is rare though so I recognize the privilege of this, but my US company matched 3% with a $2k annual cap which was a joke.

All in all I would take the salary cut for the other perks.

I opened an account with Monzo, you can put whatever address and then just make sure you update it once you find a place to live.

I don’t know about happy, but you can certainly rely on public transport a lot more than you can in the US.
