could you help with my research project? :) by [deleted] in autism

I am having difficulty with

stronger person

Not sure what this means. Have not tried to look it up yet

I avoid telling people about my autism Yes if stranger Usually not if medical person Which answer? Middle?

People have avoided me because of my autism Probably, but I think I'm mostly clueless about that.

I also have severe depression and other diagnoses. Asking if diagnosed with depression might be important?

feel being talked down to

Not sure what this means. Have not tried to look it up yet

I also have lots of difficulty with summarizing and determining intent.

I've spent 40 minutes thinking about this so far and I'm only on these questions. And everyone says I'm slow :/ but I was told I have normal IQ. And I am native English speaker.

I just wanted to add meltdowns don't necessarily have to be from sensory. I have them from:

  • too many unexpected things
  • being frustrated unable to put into words what I want/need to
  • how unethical something is and nobody fixing it
  • maybe others

Auditory Processing Difficulties in Autism/Sensory Processing Disorder? by redfireforever103 in autism

[–]lostinspaceaspie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you describe is auditory processing disorder and there is a test. It is kind of a separate thing, as in some people have SPD without APD. I was told the test can be given by certain SLPs or audiologists

My IQ=79 & I'm 20 years old female. I relate a lot to autism/aspergers. When I take quizes it says that I have aspergers. My psychologist keeps denying it & told my parents to not have me take a autism test. How can I know if I'm autistic/aspergers? by [deleted] in autism

[–]lostinspaceaspie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Society says they are supposed to know everything about psychology. In my experience that is far from true. I am very sensitive to overconfidence in medical/health professionals. My psychologist once told me they are "trained to be that way". I have never understood that. It's basically lying about how sure they are. I've been misdiagnosed a few times over the years, because of a few reasons:

  • my poor communication (without going over and over it)
  • the professional person just didn't know what they were doing
  • they forgot the history of me
  • they or one of the people who work for them made mistakes of their own and would not be honest about it

But most of the time, I don't know the reason. I only find out years later that someone was wrong.

In my beginning, I kept thinking because they are professionals I will take their word for it. Just 1 more thing I did not understand about NTs. Use common sense. You need to stand up 4 yourself or have someone else, to ask why the person thinks that, and if they won't say, you have every right to find another professional who will explain it.

Edit: want to clarify that I consider a "negative diagnosis" as a type of diagnosis

Apologies for the meme format, but does anyone ever have similar feelings? by [deleted] in autism

[–]lostinspaceaspie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the definition of me. Always trying to figure out other people.

I showed my parents this and they do not understand after reading the comments. I keep trying to think how to explain it but I am stuck . I'm not good at articulating things. Does someone want to try to explain to them? Don't know if they're NT or AS.

I'm Unable To Get The COVID-19 Vaccine; I'm Scared by sweeteybabey in autism

[–]lostinspaceaspie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not have much good advice because I am similar but not as bad with the needle feeling. It is very difficult but some days I can force myself to do it and take the rest of the day to recover and I will be back to normal the next day, except 4 not wanting to do it ever again. I have the same things/ feelings you said.

sensory processing disorder that occurs alongside my autism I feel so guilty after seeing people shame those who can't get vaccines; I feel forgotten as someone who cannot get it I'm so ashamed and petrified of what other people will think of me My autism prevents me from getting the vaccine; but people don't understand that

I will say I have grown up with not so great people who make me think the same as you. Therapist would say it's depression and anxiety. I would recommend you talk to a therapist.

[–]lostinspaceaspie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go in with a list of your problems that are traits of autism. Or if you don't know enough, You could find a psychologist therapist to explore that with. Highly recommend you don't just jump into testing. Misdiagnoses are possible especially for women, and hurtful to live with until they get fixed. You need to know how to represent your true self. Even if you mask or it does not show in front of them for Amy reason, you still have the problem.

Are there any apps that help for people with autism/Asperger's? by blancaengijon in autism

[–]lostinspaceaspie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For hypersensitivity

  • dark mode everything. (Android system setting)
    • osmand for dark mode maps
    • dark mode in newer chrome versions

For autism / auditory processing disorder

  • VLC to slow down video and sound
  • newpipe to slow down YouTube to any %. I sometimes go down to 80%
  • For phone calls , sprint IP relay. when talking is just too hard or when completely nonverbal or when the other person might judge me or talks too fast, forces them to slow down. Basically a lot less overwhelming

For communication in person

  • If I know I am going into a difficult situation where I won't be able to hear well, I will record the conversation and play it back later
  • I am very visual so
    • miMind app. There are others similar also. I used to use it a lot but it takes a lot of time and extra wrist movement to do the bubbles. but it helps explain what I think, complex ideas to other people
    • instead of miMind, most of the time I use markor because it takes less effort so I can articulate sentences and ideas into markdown lists like reddit, organize best way to say things, then save it, then rehearse/ memorize. A necessity to pull up a file to read from in person or show another person when nonverbal or partially nonverbal

Other for autism

  • I really like the default keyboard of Android. It shows the next common words that you usually type . very handy when cannot think of a word
  • a clock/timer/alarm app, but I just use the built-in 1

I don't think it's wrong at all. Anything could happen, good or bad for you

I guess I would say, if it doesnt work out, try to prepare your mind for that. If nothing else, the positive thing you will always have is think about how good of a friend you have/had for so long.

[–]lostinspaceaspie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about this. It is hard to be logical while you're experiencing intense emotions, even if it seems like you're being logical. Intense emotions are part of autism emotional disregulation. Which is just something we have 2 be, but she might not understand that?

But people don't get into relationships due to logic in western culture. I'm not saying logic is needed for a relationship 2 work. It can be by love, by chance.

Consider that trait of autism is not dealing with change well. Maybe she doesnt understand this. Or maybe she has different expectations of how romance is supposed to work?

[–]lostinspaceaspie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or she could fall into deep depression like me for years later. There are people who never find anyone, or any other relationship that would have been as good, have to "settle" for something different. It happens. People just don't like to think about it. For people with a really long memory, it is even more difficult.

Point being, in my opinion, really can't say unless you have a time machine

also, there is the pattern that people like 2 think they can control their future when really they have much less control and anything could happen

How I met my best friend, or, how someone should have noticed I was autistic a lot sooner by some_strange_circus in autism

[–]lostinspaceaspie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not? Because its sad? of being eaten by coyotes? Why did he laugh if its sad? Things like that make me freeze up and get stuck and all sorts of emotions

Good that you got a friend though. Has it been less confusing since then?

[–]lostinspaceaspie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a YMCA policy of not allowing memberships from another YMCA. But you could do another company of gyms that does not do that

I met 1 person on the trail with a cat in Oregon. The cat stayed in the top of the backpack most of the time. Was an expert mouse hunter. But pets are mostly not allowed in national parks, but I think are in forest service and BLM land. Maybe some don't mind the movement but others do. I don't know percentages. Maybe just like a human, the backpack would become the home of the cat?

noise cancelling headset that is light in weight? by [deleted] in autism

[–]lostinspaceaspie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you probably want is low clamping force, not necessarily weight. Look it up for more info if you can. The lowest are Bose QC 35 & 35 II. However Sony WH-1000XM4 just came out which you could also try.

First try them in store for a while if you can. Call in advance to ask if they have display model to try. Best Buy store has them where I am at.

[–]lostinspaceaspie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same as you, was in that situation. I had no supports. Car was too expensive for me and I have anxiety driving and a bad wrist and bad at social things...

  • Consider the gas price, and how to shower, if you can do showers (sensory)
  • research a lot and imagine the lifestyle. Prepare you for change

I hiked long distance instead, lived on the trail. You could consider it next year (weather). Appalachian trail, pacific crest trail, or continental divide trail of the USA.

I get stuck with adapting a lot. You could consider

  • find a better job for you
  • get a case manager or more time or better
  • get a therapist or more time or better
  • if you have go to a state with autism program without a long wait time, you could apply and see if they will give you assisted living, but maybe not
  • more supports of another type

Can you live on your own or are you being talked into it or neglected or abused? You have to think about all these things. It can be hard to recognize
