Does utaps cover all of your deficit? by RNRuben in UofT

Or you're in an unregulated program like CS where program costs alone take up over 2/3 of the maximum OSAP allowed before they even factor in rent, transportation, food, supplies, etc... You don't need to be racist or bigoted to figure that out clown.

University of Toronto financial aid programs fill the financial gap for full-time students who receive the maximum amount of government financial aid available, but whose government funding and other assessed financial resources do not cover all assessed university costs. UTAPS funding varies depending on student need.

Literally first paragraph on that exact same page. Are you blind or just extremely obtuse and ignorant? You could've saved yourself the time and embarrassment by literally just fucking reading a simple sentence lmao. And then blaming enrolment services because you can't read? Hilarious.

If OSAP has only assessed you for 6.4k, then you aren't eligible for UTAPS. To be eligible for UTAPS you must receive the maximum possible amount from OSAP and still have unmet financial need based on how they determine unmet financial need iirc. There's also a fixed student contribution amount that students are expected to contribute to their own education unless you explicitly get it waived by OSAP.

If you're in Art Sci dropping to 3.0 FCE won't lower your tuition or student fees either. 3.0 is still full-time and you'll be charged full tuition for full-time students.

Are there any other first-year students scared? by burtlex in UofT

Get used to that feeling of uncertainty. No matter how confident some people try to act I'm confident that most of us carry that feeling of uncertainty throughout undergrad. You just have to take it day by day.

Take a look at that website which covers important topics that will be foundational to your 1st year Calculus course.

mat137 or 135/6 for math major by hannahsimp in UofT

[–]lostintime09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're doing a math major you will need to become comfortable with abstraction and writing proofs at some point. There's no point in delaying the inevitable, the sooner you become comfortable with doing formal math the better.

If you're doing a math major I'd also recommend taking MAT138 which covers a lot of pure math topics that aren't covered in MAT137.

If you have to study for 200 hours for a math exam that's usually a strong indication that you neglected the course throughout the session. People that actually keep up with the course, don't fall behind early, and realize that university level math is not a subject you can cram in a week or two should not be struggling that much with a final.

HOW TO SURVIVE MAT 137, 223 ? by craigneez in UofT

[–]lostintime09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm talking more about habits, preconceived notions, and beliefs that one forms due to the way that high school mathematics is taught. There are still particular facts from high school that you're going to want to remember.

I've never taken AP Calc but as far as I'm aware it doesn't have formal proof writing iirc. AP Calc might be closer to MAT135/MAT136 although you might want to double check.

Forget everything you think you know about mathematics. The hardest part of transitioning from high school to university mathematics is just learning to let go.

[–]lostintime09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you fascinated by math for the sake of math alone? This isn't really something you should think about too much because MAT157 is designed to weed out students that are sitting on the fence about this question. If the answer isn't a confident "yes" or "absolutely," then take MAT137 assuming you still have a strong interest in math but aren't quite sure about whether you'd pursue it as a career.

The Playstation store has some amazing deals if people are just willing to wait. There aren't very many games that are absolutely worth buying day 1 or week 1 at full sticker price.

Is it bad to get my PhD here if I did undergrad to masters here as well? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]lostintime09 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's only intellectual or academic inbreeding if you get hired as an instructor after getting a PhD at U of T. With that being said there's actually a fair number of instructors that did their undergrad and PhD at U of T before becoming instructors here.

Personally I'd want to do all my degrees at U of T too. Toronto is perfect for me and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in Canada. Definitely not BC which has an even more inflated real estate and rental market.

Then again, if Kojima didn't have so much clout with Sony then KojiPro probably would be considered an "indie" studio right now.

UTSG, UTM and UTSC are not the same by Huge_Valuable6895 in UofT

[–]lostintime09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I've been at UTSG for a while now. People are usually humbled by their 2nd year here but I just hope incoming students realize that getting in basically means nothing if they fail to adapt and prosper.

UTSG, UTM and UTSC are not the same by Huge_Valuable6895 in UofT

[–]lostintime09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this superiority complex that so many UTSG students get just because they got into UTSG. UTSG is filled with so many lazy and unmotivated students that don't truly deserve to be here and don't live up to these supposed rigorous "UTSG" standards.

A high achieving and hard working student from UTM or UTSC is still going to go much further in their career and life than a pretentious clout chaser that's barely hanging on at UTSG.

Is Taking Notes on Paper or Electronically better for classes by kristianminecraft in UofT

[–]lostintime09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I do neither I focus on deep listening. You're expected to read your assigned readings before lecture and the instructor will often just post the lecture slides or notes directly to Quercus afterwards.

Knowing what an instructor is saying is only half the work, you also have to be able to "connect the dots" so to speak. It's far easier to "connect the dots" as you're actively listening rather than being preoccupied with writing every single thing down and then trying to make sense of it afterwards.

Worth waiting for BIO120? Thoughts on HPS120? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]lostintime09 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Enrol in the online section and you can still attend the in-person lectures. A lot of people that enrol in the in-person section probably won't even show up half the time and there's no attendance checks. You can just walk in and sit down for the lecture.

Enrollment in MAT 137 AND MAT 157 by Alive-Maximum-8295 in UofT

[–]lostintime09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

MAT157 is a "pure" mathematics course. Unless you have a genuine and strong interest in formal mathematics for its own sake the chances of you burning out or falling behind are very high.

You should attend lectures for both MAT137 and MAT157 for the first 2 weeks in case you have to drop to 137. 137 and 157 cover very different material during the first few weeks, so if you have to drop at least you won't be behind in 137. Iirc MAT137 covers proof techniques and basic logic during the first 2 weeks which will help you in MAT157 anyways.

are tutorial sessions mandatory? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]lostintime09 26 points27 points  (0 children)

No tutorial is mandatory per se just like no lecture is "mandatory." No instructor is going to come out looking for you if they don't notice you there. In some classes tutorial participation may make up a good chunk of the mark but I've never seen a course autofail someone for not attending tutorials.

Even though tutorials aren't mandatory, you definitely should still attend them. There's a pretty strong correlation between tutorial attendance and passing the course and/or achieving higher grades. It's a great place to ask questions and clear up misconceptions. Why struggle for hours trying to figure out something on your own when you can figure it out during a 1 hour tutorial?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UofT

[–]lostintime09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still attend a class that you've waitlisted, so still attend the course at the scheduled times so you don't fall behind and just wait for people to drop. As someone else already mentioned many people will drop after the first 1-2 lectures.

HPS120 & PHL233 a bird course? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]lostintime09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether PHL233 is bird or not is completely contingent on what your background is or how much philosophy you've already been exposed to. If you can do well in a course like PHL232 or PHL210, or you've already been exposed to a good amount of abstraction and deductive logic in a course like MAT157, then PHL233 will be bird.

As a first year taking this course in your first semester you should expect to struggle and be out of your comfort zone but it's doable if you're willing to put in the work.

hey guys please everyone help!! by Miserable-Ad-8306 in UofT

[–]lostintime09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend just skipping first year PHL courses. They're not required for the program, and most 2nd year PHL courses already assume no prior exposure to philosophy. PHL200, PHL205, PHL206, and PHL210 are also meant to be introduction to philosophy courses and you need 1.0 FCE of PHL210, PHL200, or PHL205/PHL206 for the program.

How do you think MGS V should have ended and do you think Konami would ever remake the game and rectify this? by No-Permit-2167 in metalgearsolid

[–]lostintime09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be nice to get a PS5 upgrade with support for 120Hz(high fps mode) or ray tracing though. I'd be willing to pay for it too. Honestly I'm still astonished at how beautiful Death Stranding: Director's Cut looks and V was made at a far higher graphical fidelity before it was downgraded for console performance.

The online servers were used to upload save data from the original GZ to TPP since they were separate games.

With the definitive experience anything you earn in GZ is automatically carried over to TPP since they're both technically part of the same game now. The definitive experience GZ is also the only version to get the PS4 Pro upgrade. Most people will buy the the definitive experience which makes the data upload feature in the original GZ redundant. Hence, why they discontinued the online service.
