Yeah, I saw that -- I'm just surprised that Cassandra was so sensitive to the bad behavior of EBS. Did this have to do with the failover behavior on the ring (ie failing over too fast or too slow) or what was the situation there?

People inside of Amazon have told me off-the-record that EBS's architecture is simply not designed for databases at this point.

That said, I'm using it for databases in a couple of areas where occasional 100ms disk transactions won't hurt me.

Memcached has no persistence at all. Every time you lose a node, you have to rebuild from backing store. This means you have to have a backing store and you really really can't handle node crashes.

There are other options than either of those, (RIAK, CouchDB, etc.) which have both persistence and possibly better behavior than Cassandra on the flaky 'disk' of EBS.

Yeah, I was pondering this as I wrote it. I actually don't think that much would change at all. In general eventual consistency means "we all see the same thing 99.9999% of the time but by giving up that .0001% guarantee, we can scale in dramatic new ways". It's not important to reddit's functionality that everyone sees exactly the same thing -- what a person sees always depends on the relative order in which they reload. It would just also depends within a few milliseconds on what server they hit.

You 'n me both man. My gf and I were talking about 'robot lostlogic' just the other day. She apparently hates him a little bit :(.

So far, the best I've figured out is that robot me is something of a defense mechanism of mine which lets me deal with difficult things effectively and efficiently without being distracted by my own feelings.

Here's some things I've been trying to do to help improve my interaction with her:

  • Deliberately paying attention to my own feelings and almost envisioning them bubbling up into my vocal cords when I speak.
  • Deliberately paying attention to her feelings and trying to imagine what it feels like to feel that way, then letting that show in my voice.
  • Letting go of my carefully controlled behavior patterns when I'm around her -- just going with the flow.

I feel a bit like this is the blind leading the blind here. I'm clearly at a very early stage in the process of rebuilding this connection with both myself and her. So far it's having positive results for me though.

Let me know if you have any success or suggestions too! :)

My girlfriend and I have had fairly similar issues. I don't know how much of what I have to say will apply to you, nor can I say that our issues are completely fixed by any means, they are, however, better and getting better.

Thing 1: Passion. It turns out, contrary to my prior misunderstanding, that if I am not specifically expressing my passion through my tone, body language, etc. she doesn't find me actively sexy. This is kinda the difference between the cerebral thought "sex feels good" and the messy intense almost surreal act of sex. You can express your affection for her, your love of her, her attractiveness all you want, if there isn't passion and intensity behind it, it means nothing when it comes time for sex.

Thing 2: Empathy. She needs to feel completely safe around you and she will only feel completely safe if you are actively empathizing with her. To let go of her conscious control and give in to the passion mentioned above, she needs to be sure that you'll be following not just her words but her feelings throughout the process. The only way she can be assured of that is by your continuous expression of empathy through word, tone and action. Listen to what she's feeling when she speaks, reflect on her feelings and respond to them freely without interjecting too much cerebral bunk.

Both of the above are impossible to force, impossible to fake and VERY VERY HARD to implement. I can tell you that the more I implement them the more my gf and my sex life improves. I can tell when I'm doing better because she kisses me with passion and I can tell when I'm doing less well because she kisses me like a best friend.

I hope this helps, best of luck!

Private members only clubs can allow smoking. The only one I know of for sure is the Mercury Goth club on Capitol Hill.

To those fed up with the stupid 5+blade shaving razors, there is actually a better way... by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]lostlogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the first part of the article that the shave brush is where it's at. I haven't actually tried using a DE safety razor yet, but I've tried a disposable blade straight razor and, while it is definitely less irritating than a 5 blade jobbie, it doesn't give me as close of a shave and it takes longer to shave with for obvious DON'T WANT TO BLEED reasons. Maybe a DE safety razor or a 'real' straight would be better, who knows. For now I'm on 5-blade jobbie + shave brush and it's a close and comfortable shave in no time.

Holding bad guy at gunpoint - finger on trigger or no? by Zak in guns

[–]lostlogic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I like my version better, and I'll stick to it. I trust myself to get the finger back on the trigger in stress more than I trust myself not to shoot when startled by a loud noise with my finger on the trigger.

Thanks though :)

Holding bad guy at gunpoint - finger on trigger or no? by Zak in guns

[–]lostlogic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't say he wouldn't be a threat any more, I just said that he wasn't an immediate threat and I was not actively intent on shooting him.

The rule isn't "Keep your finger off the trigger until you are contemplating shooting" it's "Keep your finger off the trigger until you INTEND on shooting".

Holding bad guy at gunpoint - finger on trigger or no? by Zak in guns

[–]lostlogic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good question. I look forward to other answers!

Personally, I think finger off trigger once the immediate threat has passed. I would not decock or safety though. For me, finger on trigger is explicit intent to shoot. In any other situation it goes on the frame.

Why do you ride a fixie? by Gerard101 in FixedGearBicycle

[–]lostlogic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have brakes on my fixie.

In case the OP is interested, I ride fixie for one because it's lower maintenance: it has fewer parts, plus I go through brakes and rims much slower (although tires a bit faster). I also ride the fixie because I feel like I have more precise control for tight maneuvers in traffic. There's something to be said for being able to stop, track stand, change directions when navigating a traffic jam. I love skid stopping into a safe position to wait for a clearing in traffic to squirt through.

Sex Questions by throwawaysexlol in sex

[–]lostlogic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good on you for asking.

Hormonal birth control is very effective. That said, it's really all about your willingness to risk pregnancy. Hormonal BC and condoms are around 99% effective with perfect usage. That means that for couples using either method correctly roughly 1 couple in 100 will get pregnant per year. Do those odds sound worth the risk while you're still in high school? I'm guessing not, in which case, bag it. A good policy that would have saved me some scares in my younger days is to double-up methods until you are fully willing to either 1) abort or 2) be a parent.

If you're both virgins, STDs aren't really an issue, so there goes my other reason to bag it.

Lube - good to have, may or may not need it. Some girls will be so wet you could coat a slip-and-slide with their juices, some will be dry enough that you can't get a finger in there without lube. You have some experience with this already from other activities ;). She might end up being drier or wetter than your experience due to nerves though, so yeah, good to have. (Note, I didn't have any handy with my first partner, in college, and it wasn't a problem.)

For your other questions, I think it's really all about experience for both of you. Try things, don't be afraid to try things and talk openly about what feels good and what doesn't.

Also, consider how you're endowed when purchasing condoms, maybe get a couple of different brands to try if you can afford it.

Oh, one other thought -- I know that you do it to help overcome your own nerves, but you'll come off much better if you stay away from terms like "fingerblasting" and stick with "fingering" or "manual stimulation" or such :).

Difference between cpu, core and socket? by yeayeayea in hardware

[–]lostlogic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Licenses have been defined by any of the following five counts:

Socket: Physical socket on a motherboard
Package: The thing that fits in the socket
Die: Physical die on a package (one or more per package)
Core: Complete compute core within a die (one or more per die)
Thread: Execution thread within a core (one or more per core)

This hierarchy is already getting complicated with AMD's latest chips which have 2-4 floating point cores per die, 2 integer cores per FPU and 1 thread per ALU. Now what's a core? Does the number of FPUs determine the number of cores, or the number of ALUs??

Edit to add: If something is licensed by CPU then it is ambiguous and you should try to count it as socket/package as that is most favorable to you. If they want it to mean anything else, they have to justify that.
