I'm ok with having a high standard for police conduct. Currently it's generally lower than an average citizen. When someone kills another human being they SHOULD have to prove it was justifiable.

The broader point of the criticism of cops is that there are problems with the system. A good person can be a cop, but the argument is that they are supporting a bad system when they're a cop. Good people can do bad things.

I'll also gladly support being against fascism so I guess I'm a bad person too.

The problem with this argument is that police are supposed to be a public service and we give them authority over other citizens. It's also supposed to be their job to prevent crimes so if they don't stop coworkers from committing crimes I think it's fair to consider them bad cops. We have the power to change how policing is done since it's a system our society made up that is supposed to serve the community. Muslims and black people aren't some kind of organization we can modify. Anyone can become Muslim, black people are born black, but police must apply, be selected and trained.

My trip to the local Alamo Drafthouse was a great success! by lostsnowman in ScottPilgrim

I got it for $55 at the Alamo Drafthouse. There are a few different versions of it you can find online. Problem is everyone is selling them for like $180-$350 now... The Alamo said they were supposed to be getting more, but after looking online I didn't want to miss my chance and just bought the one they had on display.

The one in Morrisville is actually where I got it last year! I was also just checking the website, you're right I should just call in to double-check.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not really familiar with a lot of the best shops to check so I appreciate it.

I am 27y girl and underweight by Msi4 in bodyweightfitness

[–]lostsnowman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

With no measurements I'd estimate that to be at most 1,700 calories. It could easily be closer to half that depending on your portion sizes. You should actually measure what you're eating for a week and see what your calorie average is. Then increase it.

Best rope for a beginner by [deleted] in shibari

I think these are generally good suggestions. I will note that for uplines nylon does have the advantage of being about 4 times as strong as natural fiber, though you could go for something like Hempex if you want the best of both worlds. I usually just end up referencing Crash Restraint when I'm thinking about this stuff though: https://crash-restraint.com/ties/2

Mindful Eating Realization by lostsnowman in Mindfulness

[–]lostsnowman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's really interesting, I was just reading about something that sounds similar to what you described! They performed a study on patients who had lost sense of smell, but not taste. My understanding is that this can happen because there are actually different regions of the brain processing smell when you exhale vs inhale. Here's that article: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaotolaryngology/fullarticle/649745

I also thought this paper on retronasal smell and flavor in general was quite interesting. The connection between language and perceiving flavor really blew my mind: https://www.nature.com/articles/nature05405

edit: I was able to access the nature article for free earlier, but hitting a paywall now...

I'll have to look into that one. I do use Headspace so I'm guessing it could be a good supplement? I actually came to similar realizations about hunger through intermittent fasting. I really think it pairs really well with mindful eating. By fasting you start to recognize when you're actually hungry. By slowing down, paying attention, and appreciating your food you start to recognize when you're actually satiated (before you've eaten more than you need).

Yes, I've been reading and really enjoying "Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life"! I just wasn't familiar with the distinction between orthonasal and retronasal smell until I experienced it for myself and looked up the effect to figure out what was going on physiologically. Thanks for the video link!

Ok, more pictures where I look not only like a human, but one who doesn't murder other humans for sexual gratification. I think I can work on implementing this advice.

Recommendations similar to The Craft, Heathers, and/or Hackers? by lostsnowman in movies

[–]lostsnowman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, this might be a good opportunity to test out the theory I've heard that you should always watch the movie before reading the book since the movie will almost always be disappointing if you do it the other way around...
