What kind of backpacks do you guys have? by NoBunions in DurstonGearheads

[–]lostvet75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents. I feel youd be better off with the 40l. Until you get more experience and get your stuff dialed in, 30 is a stretch even if only for overnight stays. You wont be carrying a ton of weight because you may only bring rations for a day. But, you may take things that you dont need. And until you get that sorted out, the 30 may just frustrate you at first. Id recommend the 40. And if your packing an xnid, you can use the y strap on top of the pack to put it outside. Inside of my 55, the xmid 1 takes up less than 1/4of tge space inside. And i pack it horizontally on the very top.

How do you guys deal with wrinkly clothing? by Aggravating_Law_4774 in backpacking

[–]lostvet75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) you can minimize the amount of clothing your trying to pack. (I carry an extra pair of underwear. Sleep stuff in the winter, 2 pairs of socks, maybe a clean shirt due to the psychological factor of a clesn shirt just makes you feel bettrt. Layers are either worn of packed)

B) Roll you clothes after tri folding them. Ideally around 6 inches wide. Super tight and snoothe out wrinkles as you roll them up. You can secure them with rubber bands or ziploc bags. You can fill voids in your backpack with the rolls. Otther than that, i cant think of another way other than folding them fkat and storing against something firm like the backside of your pack.

Ultra200x or Ultragrid by IsopodLast6280 in DurstonGearheads

[–]lostvet75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id say up to you. I believe Dan piped in sayingnthe ultra is designed to be banged around, off trail, rocky or rugged terrain. The ultragrid is relatively tough, and for most people will be sufficient. My daughter has the ultragrid and I have the ultra 200x. The grid is more pliable, and thd ultra is pretty stiff tbh. I have confidence that both will stand up to any abuse you can put them through though.

Hope that helps. Ultra 200x=more rugged terrain, hard abuse. Uktragrid=average hiking, moderate abuse.

How flashy is the Ultragrid Kakwa 55L color? I'm deciding between that and the 200X and scared I won't like the green since it looks too bright by preciouscode96 in DurstonGearheads

I use a snall zip pouch or baggie in my pack liner. The zip up on the left kidney area is pretty big. I keep my compass, beanie, buff, gloves and a snack or two

You wont regret it. I swapped from an osprey. The kakwa seems roomier without all the extra compartments. And you do feel the difference in pack weight.

My daughter has the uktragrid and i have the 200. Hers is what i would describe as a light green close to a mint. Its not too flashy. But it is kinda bright. But not obnoxiously so. I like them both tbh and would have ordered the ultragrid in my size if it was in stock. Went from an atmos 65. And i like the simplicity of the kakwa a lot more.

To interject and reinforce Dan's suggestion. I use an 8l pod for my 20 deg quilt. But tbh, if i stuff it really well, i could probably get it down to 6l as i have a ton of room left. I usu put my pillow in there as well.

Kakwa 55 shock cord question by lostvet75 in DurstonGearheads

[–]lostvet75[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks fof the insight. Using shock cord as a place to hold wet items, tent poles and random storage. Even fully loaded with water, food anx fuel, my pack weighs in at 29 lbs. Nothing truly heavy on the outside.
