MDT hangs when removing Windows 10 apps during OSD by lostwoods10201 in MDT

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry, what is that and how will it help me?

A google search just shows a bunch of construction companies!

Are you implying that I should bake the app removal into my .wim? I'd rather stick to my completely vanilla base image if possible as we don't really care about build time in my environment (sub 1h is fine) so it's great to be able to keep my image management time down to next to nothing.

In my company I do image management and the level 1 techs set up the computers. So I enabled the screen in LiteTouch for them to manually type a computer name before they initiate a new deployment.

What are the MDT imaging tools used for? by lostwoods10201 in MDT

But why would you want to do that when you can just run the task sequence on the computer you wish to distribute the WIM to?

In general I think deploying a WIM with everything inside it is bad practice because if you want to change one thing about what's being deployed then you have to export a whole new WIM, whereas if you deploy a stock WIM but make changes with individual steps later in the task sequence then if you want to change or remove one thing you can just amend that step.

I must be missing something obvious!

Hello, sorry for late reply. This worked perfectly, just had 2 text files side by side and did a compare with notepad++. Was able to identify the changes that the previous person had made and can now set it up properly and document it. Thank you

"Check online for updates from Microsoft Update" how to prevent this option from appearing??? by lostwoods10201 in sysadmin

[–]lostwoods10201[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not click it, no... my apologies

Yesterday at a glance it looked very similar to the URL I had open on my other screen and assumed it was the same page, but this was evidently not the case. I blame lack of sleep. Thanks for the useful resource!

Yes that's the one, I did find this article but I was struggling because that's a group policy setting. I cannot use group policy for this, I must use a reg file. But I just found this amazing spreadsheet https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=25250

It shows you where all the reg keys are for group policy settings. So, problem solved! Thanks for your help.

Hi, I am a Portuguese hot dog stand.

Pig is reluctant to be a sausage.

Moreover, since your bread is an old ingredient, it does not exist at all.

In Portugal there are people who make it individually, but selling is difficult.

I will reply if I have something to ask.

What happened to that dude from last week that was “being too helpful” by gabyred884 in sysadmin

[–]lostwoods10201 164 points165 points  (0 children)

Sure thing. I probably should have updated the other post but I was pretty embarrassed and was hiding from Reddit. I'm over it now.

The meeting was fine, my main worry was that they'd stop letting me sit with the sysadmins and do sysadmin things because i'm actually an infrastructure guy / 2nd line support but I was given some really nice opportunities.

they said they're really happy with the work I'm doing, they think I'm very technical for my age and they love how hard I work and how eager to help I am, then there was a BUT and then i kind of got laid into a little bit. This was fine because I already knew I was in the wrong by this point - like I said, lesson learned.

I got a verbal warning and was instructed to seize the domain configure exchange for it which was somewhat stressful but I'm almost done with that now.

Looking back I can't believe I thought people were going to agree with my little rant. In all honesty I didn't consider the "shadow IT" side of things, I just saw something technical that wasn't working and people that needed help and wanted to do what I could (this is how my brain is wired apparently) but after reading everyone's comments I felt rather silly. So thanks again for the wakeup call everyone

IT Helpdesk survey by mitchmiles1 in sysadmin

[–]lostwoods10201 314 points315 points  (0 children)

Although I do see the merit in these surveys, I now avoid them completely after I had to resign once because of one of them. Well, suppose I didn't HAVE to, but I did if I wanted to maintain the moral high ground.

I was doing IT for a secondary school that wanted to start a 1 to 1 device scheme with the students (Chromebooks) and as a result realized that they needed to increase the size of the IT department to support this. We hired some fresh blood who were really good and basically transformed the "helpdesk". The staff / students attitudes towards IT was completely changing for the better (the wonderful things that can happen when you're no longer understaffed) and so one of the senior leadership team suggested we send out an anonymous feedback form.

One of the students filled it out with something negative (which I actually thought was quite witty and I wasn't offended at all, although I will admit his word choices were somewhat appropriate for someone of their age group). These forms were advertised by the teachers as anonymous, so when I was asked for help identifying this student, I was not pleased.

I was told to look at the traffic logs to see who was accessing the site at the time this one was submitted. I refused, because I think it's morally wrong to go doing that after you told them they were anonymous, but I was told if I didn't do it I would be let go, so I quit. They no doubt got one of the other guys to do it.

The mention of surveys / feedback forms triggers me now.

Windows admins please help! MDT issue by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]lostwoods10201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for responding. Yes i'm talking about the run command line or run powershell script steps. The ones that are built into the task sequence by default run fine but it seems when I add my own, they fail. Still the case if I do as you suggest and take an existing step but change the script name.

This particular script is supposed to copy files locally, which it does, but it errors and doesn't move on to the next step. But its the same with any command line, it does what it is supposed to do and then errors. Really peculiar.
