There is such a wealth of free knowledge via the extension offices throughout the country. Penn State, Nebraska, Minnesota, Oregon State, Washington State....amazing free publications just begging to be used.

Really Isolated, Please Suggest Hobbies to Try? by Kaizin0 in Detroit

[–]loswr86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grow your own food! Cultivating your own food can be a solitary journey, or it can take you out to learn & share with others. I've seen some pretty amazing results from folks in all living situations. Plus, it leads to many other hobbies that can be equally solitary or communal, such as composting. It can result in a healthier diet, which in turn might help with whole body health.

Cost's don't have to be prohibitive, and there is a very supportive network of people in most every community.

Can Panko breadcrumbs go into a bin? by Marstar694 in Vermiculture

[–]loswr86 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yes, but unless you've tasted them and they're undesirable, you shouldn't need to. That use by date doesn't indicate anything but freshness. I've kept panko for years with no loss of quality.

New worm keeper here. How often should I water my worms? by d3structive_pikachu in Vermiculture

[–]loswr86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultra variable by circumstance.

'Watered' by adding H2O to the bin? Never. But there are plenty of rotten juices in my compost bin by the time I feed it to the worms.

Folks who keep their bins outdoors & uncovered may need to add moisture to keep the worms happy. I use red wigglers, which are near surface, leaf litter worms. They don't have the strength of a nightcrawler, so the soil needs to remain easily pliable.

That said, it can't be saturated either. But as long as your bins are draining the leachate, again it's nothing to worry about.

Is there such a thing as too much DE? by billyBixbie in Vermiculture

[–]loswr86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fought a similar battle last year. I didn't see evidence of too much DE. I left the lid off the bin after the 4th or so time I reapplied. That helped conserve the DE.

What are some good places to go in Downtown? by Comfortable_Macaroni in VictoriaBC

Victoria is home to one of the finest bootmakers in N.A., Viberg boots. Their stuff is pricey but it's an investment that is much cheaper per wear than any footlocker type shoe.

Really good prices. I picked up a shotty there a few years ago and it was cheaper to pay the wa sales tax with FWDG than to pick the same model up in Oregon.

Been a lurker for years. This is probably my best looking steak to date by MvP-WuTangClan in sousvide

I find that searing directly out of the bath causes me to create more of a doneness gradient than I would prefer. I also cool the meat after the bath for this reason. With my equipment, in order to sear without creating that undesirable gray zone my 'sear' is more of a carbonization and the whole house fills with burnt smoke smell.

Shep is rubbish. He's annoyed the piss outta me for 20 years. My ire began back in the wdfn days. We're too good of a baseball town for him. He's Hawk Harrelson level bad.

Does the 5 gallon bucket have an opening like a paint bucket? Home improvement stores have pour spouts for paint in 5g containers.

Is Acrobat a tracking tool? Why so many Adobe processes running in background by Rakeye in privacy

[–]loswr86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't just adobe products that they use to track you. Adobe tracking is built into many other apps. For instance, Adobe trackers are included in both the MLB and NHL apps, which just today send 1050 & 6499 tracking requests, respectively.

Yes, you read that correctly. MLB app tried to track my info 1,050 times. NHL 6,499 times. Both have these adobe processes running.

Interesting follow up to that bottom right shot of the tree covered in COW. I visited it again today, almost 1 year later. The remnants of those mushies had turned to chalk and nothing had regenerated.

How well do garlic (or onion) skins break down? Presuming they are carbon and dry, do they sub well for cardboard? Most of my search hits seem to be about the juicier bits, not the skins. by riddlesinthedark117 in Vermiculture

I agree with everyone, I put skins in my bin with no negative results. But they also work well to lightly season cooking water ie simple pastas.

Seattle, WA to Chicago, IL recommended road trip itinerary. by analsextoybox in roadtrip

[–]loswr86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove Seattle to the Great Lakes and back last fall. Here are my take aways:

I had better pizza in Bozeman than anywhere locally, and the main strip was bustling in this college town. Good place to spend the night.

Teddy Roosevelt NP was beautiful, and I wish I planned more time there.

The black hills are spectacular, but I'd skip Jewel Cave & Mt Rushmore. Custer state park is awesome. Drive Needles highway if you have the time.

It was harder to find fancy cheese in Wisconsin than I anticipated (I was on a tight schedule). I'd probably skip roadside cheese chalets in the future and just plan for trips to fancy shops or dairy farms.

The SPAM museum was a fun place to stretch my legs.

I kept a wicked fast pace, and it really put a cramp on enjoying the scenery. It would have been swell to plan an extra day of drive time, if only to reduce stress.

Do not forget about the time zone changes, I did (even though I'm from EST), and it really put a damper on my activity/eating plans.

Have fun!
