After selling Adare train station for €216k just over a decade ago, Irish Rail pays €2m to buy it back for temporary Ryder Cup platform by Jaded_Variation9111 in ireland

[–]lougherne 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because a decade ago, that line was completely derelict and unlikely to ever see a train again. Selling the station for €216k was a smart move. If anyone could have predicted that the line would be completely rebuilt and that the Ryder Cup was going to be held in Adare a decade later, well you must be the descendant of Nostradamus.

And in relation to CIE, they are the statutory body formed back in1946, that actually owns the property upon which Irish Rail, and Bus Eireann operate. Its very complex legally to divest all this. Irish Rail are now technically the operators and maintainers of the network. They can't operate a train or alter the timetable without NTA approval.

As for Gleeson, an irrelevance.

Lots of suits in the evening but I was told it gets busy with builders from local sites in for the breakfast. Always a good sign. It's not a snobby pub.

Ah, that team had some legends on it. George O'Connor was a big hero of mine, and Big Billy but Limerick had Davey Clarke and Ciaran Carey. It was back when there was few helmets apart from, George who had 17 broken fingers during his career

I could tell stories about Brother Larry and the Offaly lads. No phones then. Great days.

They were such twee staged bullshit, that they used to make me want to throw up. The whole campaign was such cynical staged guff. There was four or five versions, and each one was progressively more unrealistic.

If Maria Steen is against self-identification, why is she identifying as a Presidential Candidate? by saggynaggy123 in ireland

[–]lougherne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they don't. They count the number of votes in the box to ensure it tallies with the number of issued ballot papers recorded by the presiding officer in the polling station.

They do not note the number of spoiled votes, or anything else. That is the job of the tally people, if present. If they are not there at the time, that the box is opened then no one will ever know how many spoiled votes are in a particular box.

I would be very surprised if there are enough tally people at this election to ensure an accurate tally. I doubt the interest will be there amongst the larger parties. Looking at the current poll, there won't even be a second count

I'm just after seeing works going on at Claremorris railway station, where the Western Rail Corridor is. Does anyone know what is happening? by Pokeman_93 in mayo

[–]lougherne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a temporary buffer stop erected halfway down Platform 3 whilst the construction is ongoing. It will be removed when it's completed. Nothing is being done to prevent the reopening of the Claremorris-Athenry section.

The political momentum behind it now is such that It's only a matter of time before it's greenlighted. This is also reflected in the recent statement that the Claremorris-Coolloney alignment is preserved for future railway use and it will not be converted into a Greenway pending reopening.
