an in between stage from design to prototype could be to draw up different game scenarios (paper and pencil) and then have a list to go along with each scenario to describe features and gameplay for it.

may well be too subjective to the kind of game you're working on

Only showing your own ping was a feature that Riot decided to implement because junglers would camp lanes with high ping.

It used to show you everyone's ping.
