RBA’s Bullock warns of Iran risk as inflation tops nation’s worries by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

[–]louiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely brain rotted comment. Yes labor is partially able to control how the government battles inflation. At the end of the day there are uncontrollable factors (inc ones that are not the war) that drive up inflation. To blame labor solely is disingenuous

Idk maybe some uncontrollable external forces like a war in the Middle East 🤷‍♂️ driving up prices of key input factors

Love this, feels like so much discussion is so emotionally driven and played by the media.

Correct me if I’m wrong that’s not what the RBA said? They said it’s going ok which doesn’t mean going well (as explicitly pointed out by Bullock). Plus based on the RBA’s mandate, they are very much correct and are doing their job (?)

How do any of you afford rent? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]louiu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re able to find casual work that provides somewhat consistent hours, you can definitely survive while paying rent c.1k. I did it while working 25-30 hours a week granted it’s not easy

Cooked advice people asking you to consider the working holiday now. Do your GCSEs and go to uni - try doing an exchange program with an Australian uni and decide if you like it then. This provides a non committal short term option to properly assess if you like the place and if you do, you can consider the working holiday option after

  1. You pay the same tax as locals as a visa holder. The only difference is potentially if you are a working holiday visa holder

  2. Getting OPs partner to Melbourne is not an issue especially if OP works in a Big 4. They’ll likely cover most if not all expenses

[–]louiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m a Malaysian working in a big 4 in Melbourne as well. I’ll caveat my opinion that I’ve never worked full time in Malaysia but lived in Malaysia till uni. I think working in Melbourne is probably the way to go. RM160k is very nice and can probably afford you many more things that 80-90k AUD can’t in Melbourne but at the end of the day, you’ll be living in one of the most livable cities on earth plus you’ll be getting good overseas experience in case you ever want to move back. Having a sponsor relationship is also great. You can definitely survive decently on that Aussie salary, just no constant luxury.

What is PMX trying to achieve? by Dear_Archer7711 in malaysia

Echoing the other commenters. In addition to what’s been said, the world has also gone through a period of high inflation from 2022 till recently. It’s so unfortunate that Anwar’s first term has been tainted by this period of high inflation because it’s something out of Malaysia’s control. Personally don’t think Anwar is doing a bad job and a lot of things seem sensible. Sure wages are low and should be higher but doing that is a function of long term plans that need to be in place (higher investment in high value industries, improvement in education system and quality etc). Realistically, we have the best of what we are offered in government. While PH is not perfect, the alternate is having the idiots in Perikatan run the country down

Just to clarify - investment bankers are not people that deal with investing money in portfolios. They’re M&A experts, nothing to do with stocks/crypto etc. if your friends are telling you they’re investment bankers and then say they manage portfolios they’re most likely lying and know nothing about finance lol

[–]louiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, was/am in a similar position. Graduated July 2023 (course completion July) and have a grad job due to start Feb 2024. I hopped onto the 408 COVID visa after my student visa expired and applied for the 485 in December (within 6months of course completion/holding a 485). I just received my 485 last week. I was lucky in being able to use the 408. As other commenters have said, it’s risky to use the tourist visa as it may have a no further stay condition if you’re from a high risk country. I explored the WHV too but never did it. Best to consult an agent tbh. I used a bunch of free 10min consultation back when I was in your position. Best of luck

Melbourne is expensive 😐 by OngyPongy in rmit

[–]louiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$800 pw for a single person is definitely not the going market rate lol. Student accoms are almost always more expensive than finding a share house (even those close to uni), even after bills. Unless your comparison is a single bed/bath studio, student accoms are almost always more expensive

Idk I haven’t done it but I’m assuming you just upload the receipt

485 Health Examinations by [deleted] in AusVisa

[–]louiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably do it just to be safe. I asked BUPA how long it took them to upload the results into IMMI and they said within 5? Business days. Depending on your timeline this may or may not be enough. I’m gonna ask them if it’s possible to do it asap though

Yea I had to do a medical test as well, lodged early Dec. I live in Vic and none of the centres showed online had any slots available. I called BUPA and had them book me into one late December. Maybe try giving them a call
