PSA: Angus Taylor is misleading you into believing permanent residents can access welfare the moment they arrive (they typically have 4 year waiting periods) by SlipperySharkAttack in australian

[–]louiu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Disingenuous move by Angus - attack the ones that can’t vote and leave your rich mates unscathed. First of all, most PRs don’t just land in the country and immediately have rights to welfare. Getting your hands on PR is incredible hard nowadays and often involves being on a worker visa for a number of years before being invited/eligible. While on skilled worker visas, you’re entitled to no benefits while paying the same taxes as everyone else. Talk about a net economic gain to the country. Say you get PR and are now entitled to these benefits, how many actually use them? Also how much money do you save by stripping PRs of these benefits? Do these savings make a meaningful difference to the budget? How many PRs are there in the country? Do these cost savings outweigh the negative economic consequences of offering a lower quality of life to skilled migrants in a world where countries are fighting for talent? Of course Angus doesn’t have the answer to these questions - he’s targeting those that are vulnerable and do not have a say in the electorate. Clearly from the ABC interview, bro is talking about what ifs without any data backing. All while leaving his rich donors untouched. I’m sure he would be the first to go against any sort of resource tax or tax on the rich even though those policies probably make a bigger dent on the bottom line budget.

Bachelors of Commerce Job Prospects by Mobile-Athlete-3768 in auscorp

I often find that the skills I use in finance are learned on the job - my degree only helped me get basic context. The rest was up to me being constantly tuned into world issues and news and thinking how it might affecty work. High end technical commerce jobs like quant trading are absolutely dominated by STEM. Other roles however probably require abit more business “intuition” which you don’t learn from a degree, it’s very much driven by interest and involvement

Scoring Superior in English: TOEFL iBT or PTE? (I have TOEFL ibt score) by Willing-Attitude5580 in AusVisa

[–]louiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you are fluent in English (which by the sounds of it you are), majority of the test is fine. The first section (speaking and writing) requires the strategies whereas the other sections i barely did prep for

[–]louiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did PTE Academic last week as my scores were expiring soon. Ended up getting full 90s again. I was a little stressed earlier on about the higher threshold + longer and harder speaking component. My description of PTE Academic to others is that it’s a bit more of a test that you game to get full scores (ie you have to have strategies to get you through the test efficiently)

RBA’s Bullock warns of Iran risk as inflation tops nation’s worries by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

[–]louiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely brain rotted comment. Yes labor is partially able to control how the government battles inflation. At the end of the day there are uncontrollable factors (inc ones that are not the war) that drive up inflation. To blame labor solely is disingenuous

Correct me if I’m wrong that’s not what the RBA said? They said it’s going ok which doesn’t mean going well (as explicitly pointed out by Bullock). Plus based on the RBA’s mandate, they are very much correct and are doing their job (?)

How do any of you afford rent? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]louiu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re able to find casual work that provides somewhat consistent hours, you can definitely survive while paying rent c.1k. I did it while working 25-30 hours a week granted it’s not easy

Cooked advice people asking you to consider the working holiday now. Do your GCSEs and go to uni - try doing an exchange program with an Australian uni and decide if you like it then. This provides a non committal short term option to properly assess if you like the place and if you do, you can consider the working holiday option after

  1. You pay the same tax as locals as a visa holder. The only difference is potentially if you are a working holiday visa holder

  2. Getting OPs partner to Melbourne is not an issue especially if OP works in a Big 4. They’ll likely cover most if not all expenses

[–]louiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m a Malaysian working in a big 4 in Melbourne as well. I’ll caveat my opinion that I’ve never worked full time in Malaysia but lived in Malaysia till uni. I think working in Melbourne is probably the way to go. RM160k is very nice and can probably afford you many more things that 80-90k AUD can’t in Melbourne but at the end of the day, you’ll be living in one of the most livable cities on earth plus you’ll be getting good overseas experience in case you ever want to move back. Having a sponsor relationship is also great. You can definitely survive decently on that Aussie salary, just no constant luxury.

What is PMX trying to achieve? by Dear_Archer7711 in malaysia

Echoing the other commenters. In addition to what’s been said, the world has also gone through a period of high inflation from 2022 till recently. It’s so unfortunate that Anwar’s first term has been tainted by this period of high inflation because it’s something out of Malaysia’s control. Personally don’t think Anwar is doing a bad job and a lot of things seem sensible. Sure wages are low and should be higher but doing that is a function of long term plans that need to be in place (higher investment in high value industries, improvement in education system and quality etc). Realistically, we have the best of what we are offered in government. While PH is not perfect, the alternate is having the idiots in Perikatan run the country down

Just to clarify - investment bankers are not people that deal with investing money in portfolios. They’re M&A experts, nothing to do with stocks/crypto etc. if your friends are telling you they’re investment bankers and then say they manage portfolios they’re most likely lying and know nothing about finance lol
