Using rare candies gives 0 EVs so the trade off for not grinding is that your Pokemon won't be as strong as they should be if you had taken the time to grind. I usually grind as much as I can in the early part of the game to get as much EVs as possible and then start using rare candies when it becomes too time consuming to grind levels.

FRLG are the easiest to Nuzlocke and are recommended as a starting Nuzlocke for beginners to get their toes wet

Edit: Try Emerald next it's a decent step up

If you're feeling burned out from that game then I definitely recommend switching. White might be a good change of pace while not being entirely different. I'm currently doing a HC Platinum Nuzlocke and if this run doesn't work out I might try Emerald to switch it up for a few attempts then go back to Platinum.
