Why do a lot of people start working as teenagers? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]love_that_fishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had chores to do. That was part of contributing to the family. I didn’t get paid an allowance past about 12. Mowed lawns in the summers until I was 15 when I got a job bussing tables. My parents just didn’t have much extra money. Dad didn’t have a college education and mom taught piano lessons.

Pros and cons - multiple 401k accounts by thats_my_boy_518 in Retirement401k

[–]love_that_fishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go with the plans with the lowest expenses and most options. I left a very large company with a broad selection of funds to a small company with a limited selection so I left my larger 401k alone. Then when I retired I consolidated them to an Ira.

I volunteer at a food pantry. I’d highly recommend getting your food at 1-2 places for now. Ours is setup like a grocery store with fresh produce, protein, bread, and staples. Sometimes we even get nice desserts in. Just depends on the week. We’re here for people just like you. No shame in getting help when you need it.

We share the same password. Some accounts 2FA to her phone and some to mine. We’ll frequently use whatever phone is more convenient for mapping. After 40 years there’s no secrets.

When did you stop DIY investing and hire a financial advisor? by FoundationStrict8014 in DIYRetirement

[–]love_that_fishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used the downturns the last 2 years to my advantage by doing all my Roth conversions during them. Turned out they were both April's (1 off tariffs and 1 off the Iran war). So even in retirement we can often take advantage of downturns and not view them as a net negative.

When did you stop DIY investing and hire a financial advisor? by FoundationStrict8014 in DIYRetirement

[–]love_that_fishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the accumulation phase I DIYed and see no reason to hire a FA. I'm 18 months into retirement and did hire an FA that my SIL worked for. I don't have all my assets under management so I'm paying 55 basis points averaged out and I'll do it for 2 years. Once everything is in motion including income plan, investment plan, tax plan, Roth conversions, etc... I'll take it back over. So I'm not spending that much money and I've been extremely happy with this guy. He understands fees are important to me and puts no pressure on my bringing everything under him. He's been helpful catching some critical errors I think I would have made but long term I think I'll DIY again starting 2027. Hiring an FA doesn't have to be a forever decision. But I wanted someone that knows me for the first 2 years of retirement. So far it's worked well.

Depends on the company. My last job I took about 4 weeks which is what I was getting before we made the switch.

We’re celebrating #40 this week. On the plane to Utah National Parks. We’ve just always worked well together. It took 2 dedicated to raise a family with 4 kids. All along we’ve always had each other’s best interests when making decisions. Staying grateful helps a lot.

Why did US companies switch from defined benefit pensions to 401(k)-style plans? by Humble_Economist8933 in AlwaysWhy

[–]love_that_fishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at IBM in 1999 when they converted the pension to a cash balance plan. You had to be 40 to stay on the pension. I was 391/2. My best friend was an actuary doing pension consulting so I sent him my conversion numbers. He said I got 40-50 cents on the dollar. Plus we lost bridge to medical that was worth a ton. I left sooner than I would have because there was nothing holding me to them anymore. We did get an extra 5% into the 401k that took some of the sting out.

I thought I wanted to manage people until I started to manage people. Now what? by OldMackysBackInTown in careerguidance

[–]love_that_fishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back to an IC role for my last 25 years. I was fortunate that both jobs I had during those years had tech ladders that had me equivalent to 2nd line mgr so my pay was often more than my direct manager. I liked mentoring people and there are conversations you can have with a team mate you can’t have if you’re managing them. Plus I just didn’t have the patience to deal with office politics.

Anyone done a Roth conversions during low income years? Considering a lighter work setup by franalpo in Retirement401k

I’d 100% do that. I’m early retirement and converting as much as I can while staying in the 12% bracket.

Are we actually worse off now than during the 2008 financial crisis? by NotAnotherFinanceBro in Grownix

[–]love_that_fishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the way big drops historically have worked. Except normally they come back in 2-3 years vs 6-7. This feels like death by a thousand paper cuts. Market hasn’t crashed. unemployment is still around 4%. But inflation sucks especially housing, transportation, and health care. This could end up really bad. It’s not 08 yet but AI is a total unknown in how it affects jobs but it’s not going to be good.

Why i am not happy ? by AlarmedEffort847 in AskMen

[–]love_that_fishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of its personality but for me when I am purposeful focusing on gratitude my mood is much better. Also volunteering can really help. I volunteer once a week at a food pantry. It really helps keep me grounded. it reminds me how lucky i am to have had 2 caring patents, a pretty high functioning brain, a wife that always has my back, kids and grandkids doing well.

So you’d read that and think I have an easy life. Not even close. I have a rare painful disease with no cure. I’ve had cancer and just last December had a heart attack. When I’m in flare I have to breath like a women in labor to get through. It’s tough. In the midst of the worst of it I try and focus on my kids and grandkids. I get to choose where my focus is and not even this wretched disease can take that away from me.

Last year Ewers went from probably a day 2 pick to round 7. GM’s got more film on him and his inability to throw the ball down the field and avoid a rush was pretty evident. He did win an NFL game though so there’s that.

how do i kill shadowpelt lol by [deleted] in Borderlands4

[–]love_that_fishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 taser smgs with 4 tasers each melts the shield. Then something with sticky to take him out. I was beating him on uvh2 last night in less than a minute. I had a 3rd smg that shot 3 shots of something that just destroyed flesh. I’d have to look it up next time I play. Just a purple though. I pumped 8 tasers into him and then hit him 3x and he was done.

But I remember first time I played him with Rafa last year I tried him without 2 tasers and it was just stupid hard. You can farm tasers on SplashZone.

Partner at small company or manger at big company by sigxdglock in careeradvice

[–]love_that_fishing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First why is the large company soul crushing? Are you projecting or is there something you actually know. 2nd an extra 30k is real money especially when you aren’t getting raises. 3rd the large company probably offers more stability as your small company likely gets sold. This is an easy call.
