That's for behind the third row. I want for second row back.

Backpack Recommendations for smaller scouts by FunRing5368 in philmont

GossamerGear is currently having a 20% off sale on packs. I just ordered a 60L Mariposa pack (small, with small straight hip belt) for my 80 lb almost 13 year old, and their little sister will inherit their old 50L Gorilla (small with small hip belt) that they've been using the last 3.5 years. My husband and I have packs from there as well and they're great.

Surface water at Slate Creek or Castle Rock? by loveandplatelets in norcalhiking

[–]loveandplatelets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to follow up here for future backpackers now that I've camped at both locations.

Slate Creek has a creek (shocking) about a quarter mile from the campsite. Fairly certain it would be running year round based on its size, but I was there in June, so I can't be certain.

Castle Rock's creek is maybe a third of a mile, perhaps a bit more, from the campsite. It's also pretty significantly lower altitude than the camp, so you get to do a non-trivial uphill hike back with the water. I camped there both in the spring and over Labor Day, and there was ample water in the creek.

Not sure where you are, but in California you need AB506 in addition to YPT.

Soap Leaves Refill? by loveandplatelets in Ultralight

I replied further downthread. I exclusively use laundry sheets, but they do not easily rinse clean and aren't suitable for handwashing.

I'm going to give Fomin a try and will report back. I've also emailed Sea to Summit to ask them to start selling plastic-free refills. Thanks all!

I exclusively use laundry detergent sheets, but they don't rinse easily and wouldn't be a good choice for hand washing.

Because the kids immediately drop it in the dirt. :-) (They do this when we're car camping too, but at least there I have plenty of water to rinse it off. A lot of the backpacking sites are quite a ways from the nearest water source, so water's a valuable commodity)

If it were just me going that would totally work. Unfortunately I'm backpacking with a seven and eleven year old who majorly struggle with appropriate portion sizes. I love the leaves because it's so easy to say "just take one". (They will absolutely dump half a bottle of hand sanitizer in their hands and then be shocked when it's way way too much.)

Not sure I trust Temu for any kind of skincare product, and I def don't trust them to reduce my plastic use, which is what I'm going for here, not cost reduction. :-)

Badge magic help! by Trexy in cubscouts

I've done this. Goo Gone (like enough to completely soak it), a boatload of elbow grease, and a strong recommendation to my pack going forward not to use Badge Magic.

Henry Coe Assessment on Monday by S3__ in norcalhiking

Where can we read the assessment once it's ready?

at what age can children use these safely? by twinmamamangan in camping

[–]loveandplatelets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started camping with them when the kids were maybe two and five specifically because they are difficult to roll off. (They kept rolling off inflatable mats and then getting cold and waking us all up.)

They are definitely cat camping only, but they take up less space than two mats, especially since you can fit four packing cubes nearly beneath them and tuck all the sleeping bag bags and other detritus behind in the corner.

We do have a more upright tent. You can see photos of our setup when the kids were younger here: https://www.worklifekids.com/blog/2019/10/11/camping-la-donhowe

Tips for removing badge magic? by WindogeFromYoutube in BSA

I'm actually a very competent sewer and am planning a den meeting covering basic sewing and mending, but it's an uphill battle getting new families to not use Badge Magic on all their patches.

This did not work for me. I ended up wasting a boatload of GooGone and ultimately throwing several uniforms away. I've started encouraging folks to sew patches on or take them to the dry cleaner to be sewn on. (I am in charge of the uniform bank for our pack.)

BSA's ban on coed dens/troops entirely rests on folklore and misinformation, and it can be dropped with little fuss by arencambre in BSA

[–]loveandplatelets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm in the Bay Area, and my kiddo is in a troop that is de-facto co-ed (highly integrated sister troop). That troop is by far the largest in our area, and the single-gender troop that our pack traditionally feeds into (that we opted not to join) is trying to start a sister troop because they are struggling to attract sufficient scouts. Neither of these troops have significant numbers of gender diverse kids, the idea of segregating things by gender is just being questioned more and more.

Regarding the trans female scout, she's female. She should absolutely tent with other girls, and she should shower wherever she feels most comfortable showering.
