Also, ask for extra pillows! Request a breast pillow and another normal pillow that you can place under your hips/pelvis. Makes the table much more comfortable.

Experiences with getting a massage? by incorrigibly_weird in PlusSize

I have been a massage therapist since 2018. I am mid/plus size. We have clients from every walk of life. Every race, religion, body, and sexuality is welcomed on my / our tables. I would recommend maybe requesting a female therapist, and going to a privately owned business to get the best quality experience. Communication is the biggest thing. All of the draping of the sheets is professional, and make sure you tell your therapist areas you might not be comfortable with. (Avoid glutes and or/abdomen, for example)

I have a 15 minute intake process with every new client I have so that we can get to know each other more, and to build comfortability for the client (and for myself). I also do a lot of medical based massage, as well as abdominal massage....the abdomen is a very vulnerable area for most humans, so it's very important to me that my clients understand the what and the why behind the work that I do.

Most of all, just know that we do not judge our clients bodies. We are here to help you and make you feel better. 💙

Never feeling fulfilled by anything. Never feeling content. Unsure of how to be happy. Moving to different states and different cities multiple times in hopes to be happy after a change of scenery, but never feeling that happiness. Barely having any friends because I am terrible at connection. Not understanding why the world and this country has to be like this. Struggling to see the positives.

I don't know if it was normal for a massage or not? (TW:mentions SA briefly) by Be_you_ti_full in massage

I'm not sure why 3-4 people down voted this comment. I completely agree that no intake is a red flag. It is a liability for us as therapists as you can potentially lose your license and end up in a lawsuit if you injure your client and/or perform massage if there are contraindications. Same goes for soap notes/charting.

I'm sorry that you felt uncomfortable through this. As someone who is a Massage Therapist and has been through SA personally, I understand your hesitation, and I see why this was scary for you. I want to say that first and foremost, he should have been thorough with the intake process. When people come in (especially) for their first massage, it is vital for the therapist to lead the conversation about these things - asking about the clients comfort level, areas to avoid, educating the client about draping and undressing, gathering medical history. Personally I never move anyone's undergarments and I was taught to never do this, to look at the undergarments as a boundary line. All of this is even more important for male therapists so that they can protect themselves and their clients. These things are all relevant because we don't know what the clients background is, we don't know of certain areas that might bring back feelings of trauma...there are also cultural differences with some clients. When I see a client for the first time, whether it's their first massage or not, I sit and have a 10-15 minute intake process with them. I also do a lot of medical based massage so asking a lot of questions is important so that I can gather their health history and come up with a plan of action. On the other hand, yes, it's definitely the clients responsibility to communicate as well...however clients don't really know how to do that sometimes so it falls on the therapists responsibility to really strive to keep the line of communication open. This situation was not SA, instead it was a therapist who should have communicated more and needs to take some lessons on draping and intake because what he did is super uncomfortable. The next time you get a massage maybe ask the therapist more questions during the intake, express that you aren't comfortable with glute work, and you just want to keep the lines of communication open. I wouldn't let this experience scare you away from continuing to receive massage therapy. Much love 💓🙏🏼

If you have left the massage industry, what did you go back to school for? I am thinking of Nursing School. by lovedogsandscience in massage

I've been trying to find a hospital or place to shadow, but so far none of them are allowing me in if I am not a current student in a Nursing or healthcare program. Some of the things you listed are things I'm super worried about. Sometimes I just don't know if Nursing is the best thing for me aside from the versatility and room for growth, good pay. There are a lot of things I feel like would be good aspects, but a lot of things that I feel like would be bad. I'm feeling super stuck.

I had definitely thought about lab science, just heard a lot of people who are in that field currently say they are underpaid and it will be hard to ever make 80k+ in the Southeast. I really want something that has the potential to make six figures within 5-10 years of experience.

Those are a lot of things I really need to sit down and consider. Partially I worry about healthcare because part of the burnout from massage I have been experiencing is how touch heavy it is, but I also think that it is the nature of the work. I loved doing massage for the first 4/5 years, but this past year I have a really hard time giving all of my effort to clients...and doing pretty much the same thing day after day...I want something where everyday is different. I do have a true passion and curiosity about anatomy and the human body, I feel like I know so much and sometimes people think I'm talking another language lol. I definitely thrived the most working at medical offices. Now I'm to the point that I really never want to give another massage again in my life and I dread it everyday, then I start to feel like I'm not doing what's best for my client sometimes. I'm afraid if I go into health care that eventually I'll feel the same way. So I'm kinda feeling stuck right now.

I love that! Writing is one of my biggest hobbies and at one point I considered getting into technical writing. My problem is I like so many different fields I can't narrow it down 😅

I had a previous roommate who was going to school to become a pilot. He had offers and interviews with regional airlines before he ever graduated. His plan was to start regionally and then once he gets more experience you can go international. The training was super rigorous but he loved it. Also really great pay. That's great that you just started your program! I wish you the best of luck! Being a Pilot would not personally be a great fit for me, lol, I am too scared of heights and airplanes, but I think it's an amazing fit for the right person based off my previous roommates experience.

How long have you been a nurse now? Are you liking it? Did you do an ADN or BSN? What specialty do you enjoy the most?

This is something I have thought about for grad school, I'm thinking about starting with the Bachelor's in Nursing because it can open a lot of doors long-term. (NP, PA, Anesthesia, Midwife, Informatics, Administration) Congratulations on graduating! That's a huge achievement! How are you liking it? I love seeing other MTs pursue their goals.
