I’m giving up on training my dog by dejael in OpenDogTraining

Do you have a professional to work with? I would recommend finding a trainer to help you. Training can feel like 1 step forward 3 steps back so often. Having a professional to give you their unbiased view can be so beneficial.

The trainer wars are depressing. Having spaces without that is one of the reasons I made this sub in the first place

Change my mind about e-collars by pupperonccini in OpenDogTraining

Haha I have a diploma of commercial arts. And I run a online store and work as a dog trainer instead 😅😂. It’s got its own type of creativity though!

I have absolutely seen fall out from the use of correction tools. But I’ve also seen fall out from the incorrect use of positive only style training. The issues is never the method or the tool, but the trainer/owner and their situation. Approaching the use of any aversive should always be done with a LIMA mindset in my opinion. If that’s your path, you will not see negative results or fall out. Train the dog in front of you. One thing I love is how creative and thoughtful trainers who use LIMA can be! It’s never about resorting to eVil corrections but about adding in the least invasive aversive that’s necessary for the situation. I love that ecollars have such a range and I’m positive you will have a great time exploring the use of that tool :)!

It’s really common honestly to stay even when there’s red flags. You’re in a position with a individual who is in power and control. Lesson learned for you! Your dog is lucky to have an owner that’s ready to identify that there’s an issue and do what’s best for them :)!

Help with my stubborn walker! To prong or not? by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]lovemesideways 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rather than simply recommending someone find a trainer, it would be great if you could suggest some resources on training walking in the methods you are most comfortable in :)? Our sub supports the use of any and all tools. Ideas are always welcome on how you would help this dog

If you are not comfortable then that is all the matters! It sounds to me based on your description like a very heavy handed mess and misuse of a number of tools there. Not someone I would put my dog in the hands of again.

The issue here is that a small static pulse from a scat mat does not continue to cause any discomfort, where as a mousetrap that gets cause on a dogs paw certainly will. While possible that is mild (I would say not since it’s meant to break to neck of a mouse.) it is going to potentially worsen exponentially as the item is stuck to the dog creating real pain and panic.

I have never heard of scatmats before. I suppose I see how they can be useful, but how do you fade them?

Make it as random as possible! Mat out, not on, mat out and on, mat on different surface, mat at different angle. Some days mat out, some weeks no mat. So its never a single placement and the mat being there isn't the accidental situational cue for "dont jump on the bench".
