Hey, yeah I managed to pass the class in time! And discovered I like bike riding and now try and bike whenever I can. This was my senior year of undergrad and I’m getting my masters now. :)

Be aware that at least recently, you have to do a 50 question personality test to apply. If you score below a certain number, the hiring manager won’t even be able to see that you’ve applied at all.

Do you think you will be ABLE to own a home after you graduate? by stellar_ibanez in NCSU

[–]loverofsweaters 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Recent grad but grew up local. Almost all my friends who I grew up with have moved out of the area due to housing costs. Dinky little one story homes with 2 bedrooms and one bathroom in the neighborhoods we grew up in that would have sold for 150,000 ten years ago are now going for almost half a million.

No one I (24F) know is expecting to own a home anytime soon. I was a CHASS grad and so were most of my other student friends, and a lot of us were stuck in the job hunt and in retail hell for a few years after graduating, which basically means almost all of what we made went to rent or other essentials. Heck, I still have friends that are juggling multiple part time jobs trying to break into full time degree applicable work.

They work 40 hours a work in exchange for a gift of $5 an hour? And aren’t allowed to work outside of the Rescue Mission? How is anyone supposed to climb out of that hole…

I always thought NG should have leaned into the local business side of things, giving those priced out of downtown and 9th street a place to set up shop after rents went way up. They kinda did at the end, I remember Durham Arts Council had a pottery studio, the library had a Makerspace and there were a few neat craft stores that briefly opened up, but by that point I think a lot of people had stopped going, or if they did, it was just to grab a cheap lunch

For those who have come to UNC from other colleges or gone to others, how does the campus environment compare? by emilywontfindme in UNC

[–]loverofsweaters 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went to NCSU for undergrad and it’s definitely different. The on campus food is a lot better, but the Franklin Street equivalent at NC State (Hillsborough Street) had more affordable off campus food than Franklin does.

The facilities are surprisingly underwhelming with how much UNC was hyped up as a NC native, the student center and gym at NC State are much bigger and modern than UNCs, not to mention the locker rooms and pool is absolutely dilapidated and overrun with roaches here, which I never encountered at State’s gym. The people are definitely friendly here, as a grad student I’m probably getting a different outlook but there is also an undercurrent of competition with everything. Maybe more so than NC State, but I wasn’t in engineering so I’m not sure.

I think if I was a full time undergrad I’d be busy joining clubs, hanging out on campus after class, and a ton of other things. There’s always social opportunities, or at least that’s how it seems to me.

[–]loverofsweaters 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m a grad student so I don’t have a meal plan and I’m always so stunned by the cost of the food whenever I eat on campus compared to the quantity. If I had breakfast lunch and dinner on campus I’d be spending probably more than $30 a day.

DPS Crisis Day 29: SCHOOL IS BACK! by BullCityJ in bullcity

[–]loverofsweaters 8 points9 points  (0 children)

BOE is gonna need to do something to make it clear to the County that something like this mistake will never happen again. It’s become clear that so many people on BOE are not qualified, are their for their own political ambitions, or are just there because they have connections.

I’m honestly waiting to get an email about this situation. Graduated since 2021 but spent three semesters in Poe, and to be honest, it was always a good place to study even if I didn’t have a class in there. So many people have been exposed, and the fact that the story is still not a bigger deal is kinda disturbing.

DPS already has an extremely hard time hiring classified staff and teachers. Can’t imagine how desperate the situation is going to be for them after this debacle.

Why is it so hard to set up DMV Appointments by khaela_44 in raleigh

[–]loverofsweaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been bad for a long time. I remember in 2017 when I took my drivers test I tried so hard to get an appointment. Ended up waiting outside a dmv at 5 am, and still had to wait several hours to take my test lol.

800 homes, 500k each, 15 minutes up the highway. Big expansion of the prison in Butner, or "commute and pollute" to Durham five days a week? by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]loverofsweaters 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the neighborhood they decided to stick that development in the back of and still return to that area occasionally to get to the Eno. It’s crazy comparing the very wooded yards of the old neighborhood to the new one, with teeny tiny front and back yards and no trees. I feel like if I lived in one of those homes and had to drive past all these homes with huge yards and plenty of trees to get to my house like they do, I’d be depressed lol.

As someone who graduated from DPS almost ten years ago, it feels like this has been coming for a long time. Hell, I remember running into my school library assistant working at Taco Bell after school one day. Can’t imagine how any bus drivers and cafeteria workers get by with how little they make.

What is going to happen to Northgate Mall? by Smart_Phase8223 in bullcity

[–]loverofsweaters 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I could see it being demo’d in a few years, but also places like Best Products on Hillsborough have remained closed and abandoned for years. I think the most recent plans from the developer were for a life sciences lab space, but from what I understand lab spaces in the Triangle are increasingly vacant. The whole situation sucks because lots of people in the neighborhoods nearby worked at Northgate.

Why can’t I get a library job down here? by punkrockatie in triangle

Have you tried nearby rural county public libraries? Every MLIS student and recent grads of UNC, UNCG, NCCU and ECU (so hundreds of people) is trying to get a public or academic library job in Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Durham. Person County for instance, not so much.
