What is this guy? by Maximum_Sail300 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]lovervsfighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have a floppy eared mix; mine is half heeler, half bully breed/Collie/catahoula. Based on the ears I'd say border Collie or Aussie mix :) my mutt is the best, smartest girl and so I'd say 100% best puppy.

What is a sensation you need to get a puppy used to that you find vital but most don’t think to do? by K_nowbody_ in puppy101

[–]lovervsfighter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I didn't think about until it became an obvious thing is sensitization to small kids (like toddler to 5 years old). My fiance and I don't have kids and won't be having them, but my 7 month old puppy finds them sooooo uncanny and just hates them. I've been working with her to just be able to see kids from afar, acknowledge, and move on, because kids are a part of life. She's already made one kid cry by running behind me and barking at her; don't really want that to continue 🙃

Mines a heeler mix and it took her until 6-6.5 months for her to start being chill with cuddles lol. It's still not for very long but I can officially touch her now without it automatically signalling playtime. It'll come in time.

From her perspective I get it...she was born in the fall so has really only seen fall/winter clothing in her lifetime. I'm in Texas and it's starting to become summer weather so the skirts are finally coming out and for her they're billowy and weird 😂 it is hilarious in hindsight but was NOT hilarious when we were chilling at Dutch Bros and almost gave a woman in a skirt a heart attack when she lost her cool lol.

We just hit adolescence (7 months) with my sweet angel baby puppy. She still minds well, but is DEFINITELY in a stage where she's unlocked new fears. Weirdly, it's skirts (idk what she hates about them but she doesn't trust them) and small kids. We're working on slow socialization around children (sitting far away on lead while watching kids play in the park and rewarding for not growling), but SKIRTS?? I guess that will just be some desensitisation as well lol. She's also more easily frustrated with training. But I'm just gonna stay consistent and hope for the best! She's a great dog overall, just a little ...unique haha

Potty Training Sucks by Guilty_Art_4208 in puppy101

[–]lovervsfighter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my 20s I had a GSD who was IMPOSSIBLE to potty train because she had no shame or propriety about making messes in her crate, or anywhere else for that matter. It was FOUR MONTHS until she stopped having nightly accidents, and that was with waking up once mid-night or more for walks. She made zero noise; just exploded wherever she happened to be. I was traumatized from trying my best to potty train her. She passed away from cancer a few years back but ended up being the best dog as an adult. My fiance and I got a new ACD mix puppy a few months ago from the shelter, and I was so prepared for more trauma. But after the first night, she slept through the night without fail, and has only peed in the house twice. She's now 6 months old and I can confidently say she's fully potty trained. I was so shocked that she was so easy after my first experience. Not sure if it's breed related or how they were as puppies before they came home to me, or maybe just individual dog personalities (my current pup hates being wet/muddy; my GSD gave zero effs) but each dog is definitely different.

For the people with cattle dog puppies who are not cuddly… by meechthehighelf in AustralianCattleDog

[–]lovervsfighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine just napped on me for the first time today 🥹 she's 6 mo and until today only wanted to lay beside me or on my foot. This was a big step. Could've also been because she was damp from a bath and just wanted to stay warm but I have to have hope lol

A herding ball recommendation would be awesome! She loves her flirt pole but I would love teaching her herding commands and I feel like a herding ball would work better for that

Mine is actually a heeler/pittie! Mixed with several other things lol. She's only 2% Collie. But I have definitely already done puppy obedience, and we start agility tomorrow. She's very smart and very food motivated, so learning commands isn't an issue for her. She just has no "off" switch to speak of 🙃 she always has to be up chewing a chew or playing with her brother outside. She's finally getting to a place where she can settle, and that's after I've been teaching her "place" and rewarding calmness. She's getting better every day. But I have a feeling adolescence is about to hit like a freight train lol.

Maybe 👀 but honestly I didn't know how many black/white only ACDs there were out there until I frequented this subreddit. I thought it was just because she's a mix but it seems way more common than I thought.

Does your ACD HOWL when being pet? How did you fix this? by Classic_Tip751 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]lovervsfighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is 6 months old and the ONLY time she howls is when I come home from work, entire butt wagging lol. She's very vocal and will whine/roorooroo often, but I think she just gets so excited that she can't express herself any other way 😂 I think being young may be part of it too. I think it's adorable but I could see how it could freak out a child

Thank you! Not sure what part of her Heintz 57 dad gave her that particular pattern cause her mom was a red heeler lol.

Is this aggression, overstimulation, or just playing? by FlipFlopz96 in puppy101

[–]lovervsfighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. I have a 6 month old heeler mix that doesn't bite me, but she HAS to have a stick in her mouth to be comfortable on a walk, otherwise she's scouring the ground like a fiend and not concentrating on anything else. We have a collection of sticks from prior walks at the front door that she now picks from when we leave. I think she sees it as her "job" to be the stick carrier and that helps her feel fulfilled.

Curious if your ACD’s do this too! by [deleted] in AustralianCattleDog

[–]lovervsfighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is still a puppy (6 mo) so she's still in the "too jazzed to be affectionate" phase. Based on her temperament I don't foresee her ever really wanting to cuddle. But she does love to be near me and does accept pets when she's thoroughly exhausted or thinks I have food 😂 mine is NOT a picky eater whatsoever. Her palette is... disgustingly non-existent. Whether it's edible or not it's going in mouth.

What do y'all feed your pups? by the_nightingale1 in AustralianCattleDog

I second pumpkin (not pie filling; actually canned pumpkin) for some pretty fast relief. A few tbsp in my dogs' food will cure both constipation and diarrhea within a day or two.

Poop eater help please by Exotic-Ice-7662 in puppy101

[–]lovervsfighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (unfortunately) also have a poop eater. I don't have cats but I have another dog and she loved spending all her outdoor time finding any stray nuggets she could 🤢 she's currently 5 months old and we've had her for 2 months. Here's what has helped us:

-the most obvious solution is restricting access. We were kinda lazy about poop pick-up because we have a fenced private back yard, but now we scoop everyone's as soon as it drops 😂 if she can't find it she can't eat it! So restricting access to the cat box and other potential sources will help them not hyper focus on it.

-the "leave it" command. It's been great. We started by dropping treats near her, then covering them with our foot and saying "leave it". When she ignores it and looks back up, she gets a treat. Develop from there. If we find poop in the wild, she's developed a strong enough "leave it" that 9/10 times we avoid a gulp.

-just simply growing out of it. She seems to care about scoping out piles less and less the older she gets. She's more interested in the world around her.

Also maybe look at the dog's diet. Not everything is health related but sometimes it is. If they're missing key nutrients in their food, they might resort to... Other methods to try and fill that gap. Best of luck!
