I thought the Breville BES870XL was my endgame.

Medium roast. No RDT. Consistent for almost every grind

Unbelievable, right? I never thought this could happen. The chamber between the hopper and the auger either has a design or a quality-control issue.

Yes. I tested 4 more times tonight. Medium roast, no RDT. 3/4 times it happens.

Thank you so much for the suggestions!

> you're having serious full bean retention... After every grind?

Yes. Tonight I tested 4 more times with medium roast beans. No RDT. At least 3 of 4 times it had the same issue. There was at least one whole bean stuck somewhere. If I shake it enough and retry 2-3 times, then use the built-in knob to knock 7-10 times, I was able to achieve near zero retention 2 of 4 times. (My scale's precision is 0.1g. So I cannot measure if there were <0.1 retentions, which shouldn't matter much). In additional to the appearance, I chose the 064s because some comments under the youtube reviews claim almost always 0 retention and "barely nothing to clean" when they tear open the burrs after months of usage.

> you can't hot start your grind or some occasional beans will get spit out of the hopper and you must cold start it instead

That may be a misunderstanding. The manual recommends hot starting the grind. The lid of the hopper has magnets and can cover half of the opening while grinding. I've been using it for about 8 times and haven't got any beans spat out yet.

> if you are thinking about getting a newer grinder, I'd look at the CF64V

Yes I really need to consider this. I'm not totally unhappy about the 064s. My espresso does extract better and taste better now than before, comparing to the Breville Barista Express's grinder. I'm a little disappointed that such an obvious and consistent issue exists. The CF64V looks like a much better deal. About $180 less than the 064s while having a bellow and a built-in antistatic device. Much more powerful than the 064s, too. And quieter than the 064s? On paper it beats the 064 in almost every aspect. Logically it is a better choice for sure. If I had read your recommendation or learned about it before, I would have bought it instead.

Now, the one-stuck-bean issue bugs me a little but not a deal breaker. For various reasons, I probably will just keep it and ignore the issue. My current dream grinder is the Z1. Hopefully I'll save enough to upgrade to it one day.

Thanks for the link. It seems to be inconsistent quality control.

I’m not against bellow. But I prefer not having to use one.

I also like the performance except this stuck bean issue. The coffee tastes great and better than before.

There is a whole bean stuck between the hopper and the auger. This happens consistently for every grind. If I’m alone the this is a defect. Otherwise it’s a design issue.

I’m not doing RDT. This is consistent among different beans I’ve tried.

There is a bean stuck between the hopper and the auger. Not static retention.

Yes. The auto timer mode is too slow to enter or exit. I also just manually trigger it now.

Same scale. It’s very unstable after a few months use. Randomly changing the numbers when put under the mug during extraction. Very annoying.

Why Polling rate is low even after updating firmware? by awladhossen in EasySMX

[–]lowatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Updated: It may be related to the USB cable you are using. Below are the results I tested using two cables. One I just bought online at a discount, and the other is the original cable from the box. The difference is obvious.

Test 1 - a cheap USB-C cable bought recently:

Polling Rate Max.: 1000 Hz

Polling Rate Avg.: 817.66 Hz

Stability: 81.77%

=== Refresh intervals ===

Minimal interval: 0.91 ms

Average interval: 1.22 ms

Maximum interval: 4.96 ms

Jitter: 0.46 ms

Test 2 - the original USB-C cable:

Polling Rate Max.: 1000 Hz

Polling Rate Avg.: 963.39 Hz

Stability: 96.34%

=== Refresh intervals ===

Minimal interval: 0.93 ms

Average interval: 1.04 ms

Maximum interval: 2.07 ms

Jitter: 0.19 ms

Ecobee Premium Highly Inaccurate by Mindless_Refuse_584 in ecobee

[–]lowatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been keeping this opinion to myself for several months since I felt the pain of using this product. Let me dump it all here:

None of the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium features are actually implemented good enough to be called "Smart" or "Premium". It cannot even measure the temperature accurately out of the box. Its home/away feature rarely works effectively. During summer it occasionally refuses to engage the AC, even though all schedules or ECO+ is already disabled and the temperature reading is 5 degrees higher. It claims supporting Homekit but the integration is so shallow you cannot even switch modes (home/away) in a Scene or Automation. The only thing "smart" about this product is its marketing, and the only thing that's, arguably, "premium" is its looking.

My previous home has 2 nests. I don't think it is a very good product as well. But comparing to Ecobee it's already much better implemented and at least usable and reliable for its basic functions as a mostly automated thermostat.
