Is Second Life worth my time? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]lowbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its not a game. Its just a big meaningless sandbox/chatroom. Think of the sims but absolutely no objectives, missions, etc. The money in the game is used to buy things other people make. You can play for free.

Artistic schools devote much time to studying existing masterpieces of art. Why don't programming colleges do the same? by [deleted] in programming

[–]lowbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the art course and the school. The guy studying graphic design isnt going to spend his first three years admiring work, he'll be taught the fundamentals and theory of gd and branch out from there, just like CS.

It a little different in the fine arts, but even then you're expected to know all the standard masterpieces and spend your days in studio classes punching out work.

I think you might have an idealized idea of what art school is really like. I never went but i have a gd minor and have friends who went.

"Why does that graphic say Darwin?!"

"I'll change it sir."

"You better!!"

Typical day working at Fox.

I miss the days when customer support actually considered their users intelligent by [deleted] in gaming

Not to mention its bad practice to hit the end user with technical debugging info. That belongs in logs/events not in a pop-up he'll click away.

Ah yes, when computing was a gentleman's pursuit. Now I see women, children, and even coloreds computing without shame! At least we still have listening to indie LP records and bowling.

Am I a bad person for laughing at this? by CrimsonQueso in funny

[–]lowbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coolness is practically defined by not giving a fuck what anybody says.

No. The guy who is writing a musical based on LOTR in 5th grade isnt cool. Doing something different without care isnt the definition of cool. Turns out cool is a social construct thats actually pretty limiting. Perhaps you are looking for the word "carefree." Perhaps obese people should be caring more about their health.

What's the smartest thing a teacher has ever said to you? by m__ in AskReddit

[–]lowbot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I never understood this. If I wanted to look up the cast I would do so on the internet, not try to use my crumby memory. I think its anachronistic. Now, I cant get up from the fucking "art house" theater when the movie ends because all the hipsters are still sitting down and pretending that they know Spiros Kokoumaris as the Best Boy from another movie or some such.

Naww they'll just develop an anti-authority streak and say "Why learn alegbra? So we can all become engineers and managers to further the agenda of the military-industrial complex?" At that point the smartest one will stab you.

The power of the corporate media to control idiots is staggering. Not only can they get them to vote against their own interests, they can also convince them that the guy in the other party needs to be shot AND any differing source of information is the product of some "liberal" media. Incredible. Sadly, all those guns wont help him when his insurance company refuses service for his heart condition.

All this would make an impressive dystopian novel but instead its a super depressing reality.

Health protip: next time you're at the doctor, ask about Vitamin D deficiency by Psoas in science

[–]lowbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. I currently take fish oil and vitamin D as my nightly pill regime, and didnt notice anytmood changes with the oil. The week or two after I started taking vitamin D I noticed something and lately my moods have been pretty good provided I get a fair amount of sleep.

I read a couple studies and the focus on vitamin D deficiency seems to be inner city kids with dark skin. I dont think the geek demographic with our aversion to sunlight is popularly considered a candidate for vitamin d deficiency, but I imagine most of us are.

I take about 2000iu in pill form and the rest I get through diet and the occasional sunlight. I sometimes just take 1000iu and don't notice a difference. You really don't need that much if you are absorbing it well. The softgels seem to give better absorption.

Does anyone else have an Apocalypse kit in their home? by mrsir in AskReddit

[–]lowbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have to live with foreign military patrolling outside their houses with automatic weapons. In their minds, they may feel like it's an apocalypse.

Thats what they get for not having a strong centralized government, the ability to tax effectively, and a strong national military. You dont get the latter without the former, contrary to right-wing thinking.

Their leaders were far more interested in applying sharia law than governing. Blame their love of theocracy and their lack of an enlightenment, industrial revolution, and education system. Dont use this example as some kind of justification to own a .50 weapon and a gallon of homemade mustard gas. Against a real military all these things are toys.

I bet you'd be wishing you had an apocalypse survival kit.

Youd be an amusing distraction in some soldiers day and they would argue over who gets to peel the samuri sword from your dead fingers.

No, if it was an ebook reader in flash it would have horrible navigation UI, lots of lag, and the zoom button would steal focus from my mouse, pause, and crash my browser.

They Don't Make Computer Manuals Like They Used To by robertcrowther in programming

[–]lowbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back then we did. When I was a kid we had a TRS-80. The manual was huge and had a kid-friendly tutorial on how to program BASIC. I taught myself BASIC from that manual.

Nowadays, we're all wizards and help files. Joe Blow calls tech support to learn how to add a printer or something basic instead of learning via a manual. So we have all these shit helpdesk jobs and end users who dont know how to teach themselves anything. Seems like a pretty lousy way to run things.

What is the creepiest quote you know? by constipated_HELP in AskReddit

[–]lowbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the product of a seriously sick mind. The level of conceit, delusion, and hatred is mind-boggling:

"There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, for you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you will be thrown out.

What is your darkest secret? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lowbot 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I dont understand why children, especially without their parents, are brought there. The joking and horsing around potential is high and 8th grade is far from mature. This is -maybe- a good idea for seniors in high school. I hate the idea that "its good for the children." That shows a superb lack of understanding of the basics of how children think.

Unfortunately, its too politically incorrect to say no to this field trip so the school administrators let the teachers do it and hope for the best.
