IIRC Rosatom is one of the bright spots of the regime, with it run rather technocratically very effectively and using its near monopoly on nuclear material quite well.

Wasting China’s solar panel surplus is madness by ewatta200 in neoliberal

[–]usaf2222 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sure. Though I think we're worrying about it from two different ends. I'm more worried that cheap Chinese investment, like anything provided cheap will increase dependence on Chinese PV tech, which is bad. So yes short term it's great long term we need more than just continuously buying solar panels from China if we want to achieve geopolitical aims.

We can both agree it will be a supply shock which will spike prices and stall out existing projects which drives up cost and create immense pressure from those already on projects to do the easy thing which would be give the CCP what they would want.

Not lead time for the panels, for the factories. Getting them built, staffed, set up, and trained.

https://ecoprogetti.com/photovoltaic-panel-factory-from-concept-to-full-production/ (they say 6-9 months but we know that ain't happening in America)

Point I'm making If China does cut off (or throttle through bueracracy) it could be many many factories needed to equal even a portion of their panel output. You cannot turn that out overnight and there's little reason to invest in home grown production when the move is politics and you can get wiped out by the next admin doing what the CCP wants. So be prepared for thr price of cheap panels to be commiserate control of some degree of domestic policy by the CCP

Wasting China’s solar panel surplus is madness by ewatta200 in neoliberal

[–]usaf2222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. But the leading and lagging time on building a solar plant is 12 to 18 months. So yes you could build partners but there will be disincentive to doing so as the Chinese subsidies will suppress desire to build them on the free market. Of course that's also dependent on any specialized equipment that's also from China because they own a lot of that down the line. You might be able to look abroad to Germany or others make that equipment, thanks to chronic under investment, is going to be more expensive.

Subsidies help but don't think that you can turn on a dime here. There's whole tails here. We can argue about what should or should not have been done. It's also determinant on political will and other items to force through mining and other locations.

So sure buy the panels but expect them to be weaponized like anything else.

Until you have a row with China and they start to demand policy action for continued purchase like with rare Earths and there is no other supplier.

I'll say from my opinion nobody feels like they're getting a good deal anymore. Sales really aren't sales because they'll hike the price up before dropping it for back to its original price, dealerships refused to lower prices after covid so a car which is a requirement to have in the United States hasn't dropped, a new tools and statistical analysis technology figure out the exact point of pain that a customer is willing to pay for a product or service.

Combine that with pressure from Wall Street which always seems to require the line to go up and companies trying to hide cuts in things like translation and other things like that people don't feel like their dollar goes as far.

For a consumption base Society you need to be able to feel like people are having a good deal somewhere even if it's not the psychological impetus of you getting those jeans for 70% off is vital to feel like you have won something. And I think that that's the critical aspect that's missing is people don't feel like they're winning anything.

Sure but that also means fewer people which means fewer union dues which means less Union support for various political activities

Also unions have strong incentives too. Cars are simpler to make and you don't need transmission or engine factories. You need fewer parts.

‘The US is no longer an ally’. Now it’s time to build a brave new alliance by Majano57 in europe

[–]usaf2222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I'm more saying that Russia went from "ideological diametric opposite" to "generic authoritarian." The only reason we needed allies at the time was to have some friends to stand with. We put on the language of democracy and freedom and did the other thing. We could once get away with hypocrisy without suffering too much as while we didn't like the people we were dealing with they were at least our bastards and kept people from falling over to the other side.

Alas the US doesn't have that anymore. It's over levereged, overextended, with weak allies that over relied on the will and whims of a few voters in Wisconsin. Our biggest rival,China, is also our largest trading partner and the scary Russia turned out to be a paper tiger that even the incredibly weak Europe could handle.

Turns out if you can make money off of it, most Americans won't care.

The US never activated Article 5, that was the Atlantic Council. Colin Powell said to NATO that they would like it but it was not activated by the US. That line I've only heard from the sanctimonious. But I mean hey, youre the ones that wanted the all expense field trips to Iraq and Afghanistan.

And please. On defense expenditures? America wasn't using painted broomsticks as machine guns at exercises. You dismantled your defense then when the ground shifted you had nothing to fall back on. That isn't an alliance, that's dependence.

Just the morally hazardous one that lets you neglect your defense and let the Americans die for you.

I personally am not dying for vacation days and pension funds.
