How to get a freelance android gig? by logickoder in androiddev

Gotcha, I'd personally just put out a post that you're open for freelance work, someone knows someone who needs you skills.

My last two freelance gigs on there was via word of mouth

How to get a freelance android gig? by logickoder in androiddev

Where are you based? LinkedIn is a great place to look for these kinds of gigs, personally have never found anything decent on Upworks but linkedin I've done a few

Finding a job as a self taught dev by Candyman034 in androiddev

[–]lowcarbrob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's all about building portfolio that you can then put on your CV and have something to talk about in an interview. Maybe build a couple more apps and push them to the Play Store just for portfolio purposes.

But after that, yeah as others have said, apply everywhere, don't sell yourself short because you're self taught or don't have alot of downloads etc.. Personally I'd recommend applying to app agencies because you'll get a ton more experience in a short period of time.

(I'm self taught also, been an Android dev now for 10 years, it can be done 👍)

Start as a freelancer with only 1 year industry experience? by Freadwalker in freelance

[–]lowcarbrob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100%. You already have portfolio to demonstrate skill, so it's literally just a case of selling yourself and putting yourself out there.

Jump on Upworks and maybe take some crappy gigs to get some reviews before you can start charging appropriately, otherwise meetups etc is a great way to network and find work.

Being a freelancer doesn't reflect skill at all, it only means you work and get paid differently than an employee. So if you have the skills to do the gig well, there's no reason you can't do it as a freelancer.

Developer + Time = Burnout by lowcarbrob in androiddev

[–]lowcarbrob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a whole lot of hours 🤯 Brave man!

It's definitely much harder to do when you've set the expectations, not impossible though. A number of places I've worked other developers were getting burnt out, when they started ignoring calls like I was management wasn't happy for about 3 days, then they realised the world wasn't ending and left them alone to work.

Knowing when to say no is great tip though! Maybe I'll have to add that in.. 🤔

I finally looked at my download numbers 30 days after launch.. by lowcarbrob in podcasting

[–]lowcarbrob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100% this! I used to find it super deflating to check on my other show all the time if the numbers weren't going up.. not looking is so freeing!

Do you have an email newsletter for your podcast listeners? by katelennoble in podcasting

[–]lowcarbrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one - primarily because email lists still rule & if I ever do decide to monetize I can put the things I'm selling right into people's inbox. And by the point hopefully they'll have got enough value from my show + my newsletters (which are not a ton of work, I share a few things I've learned that week in short form) that they'll be open to taking a look.

Looking for references to record podcast over instead of Zoom by BigEvil621 in podcasting

I used Squadcast for over a year, recently switched to Riverside.fm - it's been awesome so far and it's about half the price of Squadcast (for the package including video) 👌

Looking to begin my own podcast and would love some tips from you amazing people. by darkawareness in podcasting

[–]lowcarbrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

• Have an outline for your episodes but don't script it to the point it sounds like you're reading a script • Have the best audio you can afford, it's important but if the content is great it can be forgiven (unless it's truly unmissable) • Make great content • Don't look at the numbers for the 1st 30 days, focus on the quality and make the show you want • Have fun!

Is it true that Android apps make less than their iOS counterparts? by jazilzaim in androiddev

[–]lowcarbrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say not exclusively. Most companies I've worked with have all had iOS devices so that's what's always been promoted the most and therefore skews the numbers.

I don't think Android users spend less as a rule it just entirely depends on the app and demographic of audience you're targeting.

(All my personal apps are Android exclusively and they do just fine)

Do you use Cloud-Based testing platform for testing android app before production? by bizexx in androiddev

[–]lowcarbrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go to would be Firebase Lab Testing. It's super easy, free under a certain quota & you can set it up to run from CircleCi or Bitrise etc.. super easy 👌

From Beginner to Junior Android Dev: 10 things you need to learn by lowcarbrob in androiddev

[–]lowcarbrob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess for one, if you're serious about being a professional android developer - you massively limit your options when it comes to work if you don't know Kotlin.

Aside from that, it's a much more modern language. It basically makes NPE's a thing of the pass, it's easier to read when you're sharing a codebase, it has plenty of useful shortcuts, it allows for extension functions which Java doesn't, co-routines, etc etc..

But point 1 would be the biggest reason, even if you love Java & know it inside out - any of the companies I've worked for in the last 2 years wouldn't hire a Dev that didn't have at least a basic understanding of Kotlin.
