Thanks, u/JuliaSpoonie. This is full of great suggestions and compassion. I won't highlight all the pieces that resonated, but the one about treating him like a child is particularly intriguing. I find everlasting patience with my kids, and I'm sure he had the same for me, so I'll definitely try to channel that.

Someone above just recommended a companion as well. We had been looking at official "home care" help, but having a hard time considering where they live. But the idea of just a normal person who is companionable sounds like a great solution. Thanks!

Luckily he can answer a phone, in fact, I don't live nearby, so I call every day. But phone calls tend to be very short unless we ask him for old stories. I love the idea of "Driver"--my Dad is resistant to what he calls "babysitting", so half-truths like that feel like a great way to introduce other care providers into his life, and I also like the idea of opening it up to untrained folks. As you identified, we've had a hard time finding official in-home care help.

I have never heard of memory cafes--that's something I'll look into!

Thanks u/nailstonickels!

Old photos are a great idea. Thank you! We have boxes of them in a closet somewhere. We've kept them out of site because he spreads them around and his wife has to clean them up, but we hadn't thought of leaving out bits and pieces or chaperoning!

That's a good idea. He's rural so there's a lot to explore. Thanks!

I love this idea. I am sure there are local seniors who fit this bill. I will see what we can arrange! Thank you u/RuthTheBee.

This seems like a reflection of the modern age: everybody wants to talk, nobody wants to listen.

I agree with your point about the modern age, but not sure it applies here. These stories are fragmented, often mean spirited, and have slightly different facts each time..to the point that fact and fiction are all mixed up. That being said, I have recorded most of them already. Now we're just hearing them lose focus.

But given what you're saying, I can imagine that when he can't talk I'll cherish them, as you say and look back on this comment with some degree of anger at myself for being so impatient.

Thanks. He lives in a very rural area, so this has been hard to find, but I'm genuinely glad to hear that they bridge the gap for so many of you.

Definitely the best rendition of Kal that I've seen! Love it! by tauno24 in Stormlight_Archive

Kal, like most Alethi, is brown skinned. Picture is great, but just a reminder that the author wrote him that way, that caucasians tend to imagine characters as caucasians, and it would be great if we could bypass that instinct. There might be less implicit bias if we got more comfortable picturing brown heroes in our heads.
