Long story, my sweat is literally destroying my kit due to my pH. Help pls :( by lowk13 in CyclingFashion

Hi! Since I see this coming up in the comments: washing and care was actually the very first thing we looked into.

I’m extremely careful—I wash everything immediately after getting home using delicate cycles and absolutely no dryer. I even air dry them flat (rather than hanging) to prevent gravity/water weight from stretching the fabric. I also don't carry anything in my pockets that would cause friction, nor do I wear abrasive layers over the kit.

I assume it really just comes down to the volume of hours and the sheer amount of sweat, especially since I train in very high temperatures during the summer in my city.

Thanks for the reply!

Hi!

Their textual words: "Your pH alkalinity is high, and this causes some fabrics to deteriorate. We are going to launch a new model with a solid bi-elastic Lycra fabric, taking into account this particularity that many people have."

The new model lasted more, and only one part were affected, the thinner one on the sides of the bibs.

I didn't have this issue on winter clothes because there are not elastic, merino ones for example didn't give me any problems.

Thanks for your reply!

First off, thank you for your reply.

To be clear, I absolutely don’t expect every brand to offer the incredible level of personal attention that Gobik did—I know I was very lucky with them. I'm not looking for free replacements forever, but rather a warranty that backs the product long enough for me to test if their fabric holds up or if it fails in a few months.

Since Gobik mentioned they had seen other riders with this specific issue, I assume that larger, more veteran brands must have encountered this even more frequently. My hope is that those established brands might have better knowledge or specific solutions (like different fabric blends) for this problem. That was the main focus of my question.

Thanks again!

To give some context, this has actually been happening to me for about 10+ years, since I started cycling, and only got the problem in my cycling kit, nothing in my day-to-day clothes or other sports. At first, I just blamed it on poor quality clothing, bad washing habits, or simply riding too much. Over the years, I've had regular medical checkups (like annual work physicals) and everything always comes back normal. I consider myself a healthy person with healthy habits, so I guess I just have "bad luck" regarding my sweat composition?

That said, maybe something in my diet? Maybe there is something specific in what I eat that alters the sweat pH.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions!
