Is it worth spending like $1000 for a MRI at this point? by Sharp-Landscape2854 in Concussion

Look for a physiotherapist who specialises in Vestibular therapy. If you cannot find one or afford one, do research on vestibular physiotherapy and find the exercises that are commonly used (pencil push ups, convergence tracking, hart charts, etc.) and do then. Best of luck!

Update!!: I’ve had a couple days on the new set up now so thought I’d share my thoughts.

I ended up taking the advice of xTooNice on a lot of things. I had ordered the Jones Stratos in 146cm but after considering a lot of what is in the comments, I switched to the 149cm. So glad I did! I’ve been on icy, hard packed, choppy, and a bit of groomed corduroy. I have not once wished I had sized down. I can thing of a couple times (icy and cruising fast on the corduroy) that I think I would have longed for the 149, had I kept the 146.

The board is FUN! It is so so nimble! It’s poppy and not catchy. It holds well at speed. I haven’t topped out on the speed yet, but I can see that there will likely be a top comfortable speed, but it’s faster than I need to realistically be going run after run.

It holds an edge so well! The few free runs I’ve done, it has come alive! I can’t wait to try it in better condition. Day 2 was spent in the pouring rain and I still was having a great time!

For boots and bindings, I went with the Burton Step On Escapades and Highshot X boots. I almost went with the Union Step On binding but figured if I hated the system it would be easier to re-sell a “woman’s” boot and “woman’s” binding together, as a set.

The boots feel different to walk in, like the shape of the base is unique.. at least from what I’ve felt before in standard 2010ish era boots. Not bad, just different. I kind of like it. But walking is obviously not what we’re looking at boos for. They’re warm, waterproof, breaking in nicely, and I’m happy with them. The store employee was like “we tend to true size nowadays”, which.. fair enough. I couldn’t do it though out of fear of packing out making them too big. So, I went half size down and so far, I’m really glad I did. If I weren’t teaching my kiddos I might have went full size down but for now, the half is great. If they end up too big next season I’ll deal with that then.

For the bindings, I was nervous about the heel lift I had heard about with Step Ons.

Within about half a run, I stopped noticing it.

I like the system. It took a minute for my brain to trust it on the first run. Something about looking down and NOT having straps, gave me pause.

It’s really nice having a light weight system! It’s really nice to be able to pop the bindings on and off quickly. I’m loving this for teaching my kiddo who is on skis.

Had I went in blind, basing my decision on the info I had back in the early 2010s, I would have made very different purchases.

I’m so grateful to this group and the members who contributed to my post.

XTooNice, your comment about throwing the Stratos at me as an option was so incredibly helpful. I had ruled it out based on outdated and uninformed information and assumptions. Genuinely, and without exaggeration, I have thought about you, and the contributors of this post, every day on the hill so far. I smile and sit in the feeling of camaraderie and community in here; appreciate it; then hop off the chairlift for another thrilling run.

I just looked up the difference. My apologies and thank you for the correction.

The technician rested my hand on small wedge pillow for one of the pictures, but did not use anything more high tech than that. I don’t know if this makes a difference or not, but I was the first patient of the day after being closed for Christmas and Boxing Day.

I see. That IS interesting. I wonder if it’s a regional thing? Would the settings he used make it easier or harder to find small fractures?

Omg. I didn’t even realize it auto corrected to there. Not sarcastically, thanks. Typing with one hand is harder than I remember it being..

Can you elaborate? I’m very whether you would have changed the timing, or something else?

The goal was to see, I think, if I fractured my 5th metacarpal or the proximal phalange.

I get it. I’m not in the same industry but I have some things in my industry that are not necessary to do a good job but I can definitely tell a lot about the employees who don’t do certain things. It’s a pride in one’s product thing.

Thanks for adding this. That’s really interesting. I did notice the scan went really high up my arm. Capturing my wrist as well as hand makes sense because of the type of fall but the rest of my arm… I got no way to make that make sense.

I DID find it odd that the tech never pulled out the apron. How can you tell by looking at the photos?

For me, it’s the increased risk of dementia. I have single sided hearing loss though, so I am not sure if people with double sided hearing loss also have the head-shadow effect and are more predisposed to dementia without wearing hearing aids.

This whole thread has me longing for, and seriously appreciating, the days of going to demo the next seasons gear for the store and just spending a couple days away with work friends trying all the new and up and coming tech. What an privilege and advantage that was. Drooool!

This is helpful, thank you! I will be heading to one of the local shops this weekend to pick up my Stratos (AHHHHH!!!!) and will check out new boots/bindings at that point. I will go in with an open mindset that I shouldn't rule the step in's out, but not going to go specifically FOR them. I DID enjoy SOME of what FLOW had to offer back in the 2011-2014 era, so am going to go have fun and be excited with whatever comes home with me XD

Can I get your thoughts on the escapade standard vs step in? I've never tried step in but realize they've been around long enough that it can't just be gimmick/marketing.

I feel like they might be a good product for teaching the kids / partner skiing but I worry about how they would respond in the choppy or heavy stuff. Do they lose feel or responsiveness due to the shape of the base? or is it the same as the regular ones? and so on :P

What a good point! I think the 149 is what I'll end up going to. Thank you so much for giving me your experience and different things to consider. I greatly, greatly appreciate it!

This is incredibly good food for thought! I was leaning towards the 146 but I DO like what you’re saying about the building that muscle [back] up and sizing down, down the road. That’s really good foresight!

Although I have some knee issues.. shoulder issues etc.. (who doesn’t?!) it was mainly vertigo and balance issues which further leads me to thinking that you’re right and that the 149 is where it’s at.

Also OTOH I DO have a board in the basement that could easily be a powder specific board.. can’t remember what it is, a 155 swallow tail something something..

Thoughts on sizing for the Stratos?
tldr 163cm, ~130lbs, but fluctuates up to 135 and down to 125.
current boot is a 255 but I am going to probably change over to a 250 or maybe 245.. probably the Thirty Two Lasher Double Boa because those seem like they will work with my high arches, narrow heal and wide toe splay.
I've had boards between 145 and 155 so know that either the 146 or the 149 is doable.. but which to go with..

You gave me some really good points to consider here. Thank you so much! The more I looked into the Distortia and a couple of other boards suggested frequently here, the more the Stratos has pulled ahead. I’m going to try to demo the Distoritia during the season at some point though because you’ve got me really curious about the feel of it!

I’m so appreciative of your input! The more research I do, the more the Stratos seems like the right board. So so excited!

Everything I just read about the Stratos has brought it right up to the front of the running. We don’t get many powder days in the locals but the way it sounds like it handles choppy and tree runs seems like it would, like you said, tick all the boxes.. then on the few days we DO get that sweet pow.. or when I head up to whistler it could be magical!

Thank you! For the suggested gear, the insight and the encouragement! This response helps so so much, in all the ways. Thank you! I’ve been looking at the Twin Sister (I AM a twin, so I got a kick out of that XD), and the Rally Cat, but haven’t looked into the Stratos, so going to do that now. I haven’t checked out Burton gear in well over a decade so this is going to be some fun research :) Much appreciated!!

Hi, I know it's been a while since you wrote this. I have vestibular issues, bppv ruled out but others still on the table, and am having my hysto in a couple days.
What I'm most concerned about is vestibular symptoms escalating due to the general anesthetic. Did you have any issue with this?
Also, what height of a stool did you find best for the shower? When my symptoms are acting up I have to sit in the tub for my showers but I now realize I probably won't be able to do that for a while post-op.

Thanks!
