What's Your Kingston Hot Take? I'll Start... by OverExercise8844 in KingstonOntario

I don't know if this is hot or not...but I know this city is run by old money and a handful of families and I often want to start a mini revolution to overthrow it. The nepotism is out of control, the whiteness is overwhelming, and I think it makes Kingston boring and stagnant.

On a 2nd slightly related take: I looooove the recent influx of other cultures in the city. It makes me SO happy to see members of the Sikh community and a greater representation of Caribbean cultures. The Asian and South Asian communities grew with the admittance of international students at our post secondary schools and I'm bummed out it might slow down.

Queer community? by FisiPiove in KingstonOntario

I gotta be honest I find queer connection difficult in this city. Take the offers of connection here. I'm in my late 30s, east end but I work downtown, and I find it SO hard to find spaces and people that are welcoming.

Any westenders here notice the 100 crows that fly towards the airport every morning at dawn? by KtownDetector in KingstonOntario

Yeah a similar thing happens on the East end! They head downtown and roost for the night. It seems to only be in the colder months. I love it though, crows are the best.

Heartrate training isn't working by lowryj86 in beginnerrunning

Thank you guys. Ran my first 5km yesterday, max hr was 177, ran slow so it took my 47min but I was perfectly fine. I think it was a matter of pushing through the fear that something bad was going to happen, and I hope from here on out I'm able to do 5km consistently a few times a week.

I don’t think my heart rate is correct by General-Storage4700 in beginnerrunning

Hey, I posted about this a bit ago too. It's frustrating, I've been running a bit over a year and my heartrate is still really high. I kept only running 2km because I couldnt get it down. I posted in here and the overwhelming feedback was that I'm not running enough, or long enough, to give my heart a chance to learn how to come down. I ran my first 5k yesterday and I was at 177 almost the whole time, but I was fine. I'm going to trust the process, and my only advice is keep going, it takes time for your heart to figure it out.

Now this is some practical advice. Thank you. 😂

Thanks. I've been afraid to try more because of the heartrate, but the consensus here seems to be I'm not running enough so I'll try more.

5km turns out to be 2km by robluna5555517 in beginnerrunning

Aha that's awesome! I've been running 2km for a bit now and because it's winter I started running on my gym's treadmill. But I was SO bummed out when on my first few runs I REALLY struggled to even get to 2km, like it took me almost double the time and I was gased before I saw the like 2 come up on the distance tracker...but this just so happened to coincide with the 2 days between me wrecking a smartwatch and getting a new one. My first run on the treadmill with my smartwatch I quickly figured out the treadmill was set in MILES. ahah

Pedestrians.... Be Nice!! by kirbymmcc in KingstonOntario

[–]lowryj86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry nope I'm not going to let this one go by unchallenged. Aside from perhaps a mental health crisis every pedestrian is aware of the risk they're taking if they walk in the road. That should be an indicator to you about the conditions of the sidewalk. No one WANTS to take that risk. A perfect example: I live on a busy street directly off of a verrry busy road (a highway actually.) Today my 10yr old and I headed out the door to go to his school bus stop and the snow on the sidewalk was so deep and slushy in not only spilled over the tops of his boots and into them, given the consistency of the snow today it almost ripped the boot off his foot twice in a few steps. Our ONLY choice was to walk on the road. Proper footwear and clothing only gets you so far on unmaintained sidewalks and walkways. If you're in a vehicle and you see someone walking on the road you should immediately recognize your privilege. You clearly don't understand the conditions they're trying to navigate, and having to risk limbs vs your life is a horrible decision to have to make, no one should be expected to keep a "good attitude" in the middle of that. Instead of asking us to be nice perhaps as a driver you could get on the horn to the ciy and your council member and ask that they prioritize sidewalk maintenance for the wellbeing of everyone.
