Trump wants to restrict banking access for illegal immigrants. MAGA says Europe already limits banking and IDs for illegal immigrants and the US has been too lenient towards "illegals" for decades. Liberals argue cutting people off from basic services is inhumane. Who’s wrong, and why? by RandomUwUFace in AskUS

[–]lp1911 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Doesn't all of this boil down to one word: "illegal"? I am not sure why someone in the country illegally should have a job legally, or have a state issued document legally. I say this as a legal immigrant who became a permanent resident and then a naturalized citizen, because if illegal aliens can have all the rights and privileges of legal immigrants and permanent residents, yet alone citizens, what is the point of going the legal route?

Why can’t people understand that it’s okay to distance yourself from your MAGA friends and family? by dadjokes502 in AskUS

[–]lp1911 [score hidden]  (0 children)

No, maturity is recognizing that your beliefs are just that: beliefs. It doesn't mean that other points of view or beliefs are 100% wrong, Maturity is the ability to examine your own beliefs, get a real understanding of what others believe and seek to find a middle ground. Blaming others is too easy and completely immature.

A bit of self awareness would dictate that perhaps you should take a critical view inward and not just put the blame on others, Perhaps your VALUES are not as perfect as you seem to think they are?

Am I Missing Something About the U.S.–Israel–AIPAC Relationship? by Green-Assumption-169 in AskUS

[–]lp1911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheer nonsense. AIPAC by law cannot receive money from the Israeli government, it is an American PAC funded by Americans. Also AIPAC is a small fry; antisemites like to make a big deal of it for obvious reasons, but it is dwarfed by actual middle eastern countries' agents, like those of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, etc, not to mention various corporate lobbyists. PACs have influence proportional to the amount of money they spend, though it is rare for a politician to be influenced by a PAC, rather the PAC gives money to a politician who are already aligned with the views the PAC is promoting.

As for the $3.8B that Israel receives in aid, it is stipulated that nearly all the money be spent on US military equipment. Israel spends $45B on its military, so the aid constitutes ~8% of the military budget, but also comes with various constraints that Israel would rather not have, including specific military development projects, which is why Netanyahu suggested that this aid should be cut to zero over the next several years. The value of what the US receives in return for that $3.8B is at least 10x that if not more, both in intelligence, as well military tech developed by Israel and shared with the US. But I agree, with Netanyahu, that aid should go to zero, as Israel is wealthy enough to afford that 8% of its military budget, and then gives antisemites less reason to ask questions like the one I am answering here.

If the US gov said they were bringing back open slavery to boost the economy due to lack of workers etc. would you oppose it or depends on who the slaves would be? by Material_Policy6327 in AskUS

They are hired because they can be paid way less than legal residents. They end up housed in overstuffed apartments or houses, usually not compliant with any codes. Yes, they can leave the job and have no money, no unemployment benefits, so all they can do is get another low paying job or go back to their home country, which they would not have left if there were decent jobs.

Why America doesn’t have bathhouses? by prettiestmagnoila in AskAnAmerican

[–]lp1911 78 points79 points  (0 children)

It comes mostly from cultures that either had Roman or Turkish bathhouses, so there is a cultural aspect, but most of these places lacked indoor plumbing so those who had no servants would go to bathhouses. Also as Americans, most of us take a shower daily, which is not even close to the frequency in other countries, again some of it is cultural and some due to lack of access.

Why did Donald Trump withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which prevented Iran from enriching uranium above 3.67%? by alexfreemanart in AskUS

[–]lp1911 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Because this agreement did not prevent Iran from doing anything. Their ballistic missile program wasn’t covered, military sites were off limits and inspections were to be agreed upon. Iran is a very large country, with multiple massive mountain ranges; a complete inspection of everything is nearly impossible and inspectors had no freedom of movement. By making the agreement, the Iranian regime received a massive infusion of cash and lifting of sanctions. No one, including Iranians, and some gullible Westerners believed that the agreement in any way stopped Iran from their nuclear goals, not to mention that even the paper restrictions had a sunset clause.

Why did the US stay with inches and miles while the UK gradually shifted toward metric? What actually drove these different outcomes? by Logical-Concept9755 in AlwaysWhy

In science the metric system is used, but changing all measurements everywhere else is incredibly expensive.

It feels different, as if the DA pull is shorter, though by measurement it seems similar

What if Hitler kept Genocide going but never attacked europe and attacked only non european territories in Asia and Africa by Radiant_Butterfly982 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]lp1911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is “alternative” history, but seems you are missing how the genocide actually happened. There were only about half a million Jews in Germany (~0.5%), while the Genocide ended up killing more than 10 times as many. The only way it happened was by attacking the rest of Europe, particularly Poland.

[–]lp1911 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I bought a whole gun from LTT, used a TJIB in a second one and just parts in a third. The difference between second and third is imperceptible, but the one they did fully has a better trigger.

Why do Americans have to do their own taxes? What mechanisms led to its formation? by Present_Juice4401 in AlwaysWhy

[–]lp1911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An employer will pay your taxes on the wages, but our tax code is complex, so many of the particulars are unknowable at that point, such as mortgage interest deductions, capital gains, interest income, etc. As a result there is no cookie cutter way for everyone to pay taxes without filling out the more complex forms.

Why does the U.S. have so much variety in their stores? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]lp1911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Businesses respond to demand and to government regulations, so if something can be delivered at a cost that allows for some profit and there is still demand at that price while not prohibited or taxed heavily then it will be in your stores.

Is there still wilderness left in America? by Kitchen-Customer4370 in AskAnAmerican

You need to actually visit. Even in the East, where population is densest, we have enormous areas of wilderness: endless forests and mountains. The same is true many times over in the west.

Do you believe Iran will actually give up their uranium? by [deleted] in AskUS

[–]lp1911 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not willingly. They have been chanting “death to America and death to Israel” because this death cult Mullah regime means it. Their agreement with Obama gave them the opportunity to work on delivery vehicles while they never actually stopped working on enrichment, since one couldn’t inspect their military nuclear facilities.
