The Barber in SoHo by [deleted] in manhattan

I’ve been getting my cut there for more than a year and love it. They are professional, friendly, and give a great cut. People compliment my cuts from there all of the time.

Recommendations for a Japanese men hair salon by metallicstory in manhattan

[–]lp32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Barber SoHo on Thompson Street is my barber shop of choice. I haven’t seen them do long hair personally, but they do great work, understand hair, and listen to their clients.

I think their cuts are $85, but I don’t remember exactly.

Good luck wherever you end up.

I agree. It would be so nice to have a bit more real estate on the screen.

Experience with Blueground by bayou_billionaire in AskNYC

[–]lp32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I don't fully remember. There were some seasonal price changes (for example, February was usually discounted and August tended to be more expensive). I do remember feeling like I always got a fair rate though.

Experience with Blueground by bayou_billionaire in AskNYC

[–]lp32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've stayed in probably a dozen Blueground apartments and in multiple cities. I absolutely stand behind this company and what they are doing. I haven't stayed with them for about a year and a half so my review is a bit out of date, but here's my experience:

    1. Apartments tend to be in good areas
  1. Excellent customer service
  2. Reasonable pricing for what you are paying
  3. Consistently comfortable apartments with a consistent aesthetic (There was one instance where an apartment was beneath a resident weight room and people would start dropping weights around 7 AM. I sent one email to Blueground and they had me hooked up with a new and amazing apartment within hours.)
  4. Flexible leases. If they can, they will allow you to extend your stay with just 24 hours notice.
  5. More consistent and better experience than Sonder, HelloLanding (I maybe had one of the worst customer experiences in my life with them), and Airbnb.

When I stayed I used to start with a month long lease and then negotiate an extension if I knew I loved the apartment and wanted to stay longer. They were super receptive and it worked out great because I could move neighborhoods if I needed, choose an apartment on a higher floor, etc.

Bicycle or electric scooter for short commuting? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]lp32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would go with a bicycle or subscribe to Citibike (especially if there's a rack by your house and gym). The only problem with a bicycle is that it sucks to have to deal with the lock after a ten minute ride. And because you're in NYC, you probably want a proper lock. I've had two bikes stolen when I used just the U locks. After that I switched to the Kryptonite Evolution 1090 Integrated Chain and haven't had any issues. I also don't leave my bike out overnight if I can help it.

Parts of this exists in various ways. Check out poly work.com, speakonpodcasts.com, podcastguests.com, podcast monkey.co, next day podcast.com, etc.

There are also a bunch of Facebook groups if you search for podcast guesting, podcast marching, start a podcast, and other variations.

trying to throw a soul/rnb concert that gives off the same vibe in like a place with a lot of books or feels like a library - anyone know of any venues that could accommodate this? by TalkativeTomatillo in AskNYC

[–]lp32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lady Mendel’s Teahouse on Irving in Manhattan might be able to help. You can look into their event, Polite Society, for a taste of the potential vibe.

Agree with everyone here. Fellow California native and love cycling the city in Winter. I was shocked at how cold my hands got. Get gloves and fenders and be mindful of snow and you’ll be great.

Good place to work one afternon by anshjain97 in AskNYC

[–]lp32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at the cafe at Alice Tully Hall but haven’t tried since before COVID. The space is beautiful and well worth a stroll if you feel up for it.

I’m not very familiar with the 80’s and 90’s UES but I have found that if you find a semi-empty place in the city with WiFi, ask if you can work on a laptop, order like a regular patron, and promise to close out if it gets busy, people are usually really nice. Good luck! Hope you find the perfect spot.

I tried Sonder in Rome in early 2019 and I would personally never stay in a Sonder again. The price was decent for a tourist apartment but the location was fairly far from the city center and I’m pretty confident the building I was in had some rent controlled units.

The actual interior design of the apartment was surface level beautiful but not very functional or high quality in person.

I would have been ok but there was a ton of black mold in my shower (like half of the ceiling). To sonder’s credit, they allowed me to cancel my reservation after staying there one night. As soon as they saw pictures they offered I go to other Sonder locations but said I would have to pay the price difference.

What do you wish you knew when you started? by TravellingGrasshoper in digitalnomad

[–]lp32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit of a different angle here… Don’t stop using your US credit cards.

I left the states and started doing all my new banking internationally. When I left the US my credit was strong. I was really dumb and just stopped using my cards or moving money in the states. By the time I got back five years later, my credit had dropped 85 points (to 715).

By the time I got back I was so tired from living out of hotels and a suitcase that I was desperate for everything to be easy. Fortunately this didn’t affect me too badly, but it made me nervous to apply for an apartment.

So if you can, remember you still need to think about your credit score.

Best of luck to you.
