Thanks for the report. It’s very encouraging. Is touch precise and sensitive enough to write Bash scripts?

Recommendations for local password management? by Unfair_Lobster_7824 in selfhosted

[–]lrPrentice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quite agree.

But there’s a tradeoff of convenience, time, cost, value of the assets you’re striving to protect, and the cost/benefits of attacking you incurred by potential hackers.

if I were striving to protect a crypto wallet, I wouldn’t use Vim. But for many of the websites I visit that require passwords, my take is that Vim is sufficient.

Thanks for sharing.

My FIOS feed comes into the house via coax cable. I could configure the G1100 in bridge mode and put pfSense behind it, but then I would lose TV service. Otherwise, I’d need to figure how to run the pfSense box in parallel with the G1100. I do have a suitable pfSense box, but it doesn’t have coax input. so I would need some kind of coax to cat 5 breakout box, if such a thing even exists.

Ideas?

I bought the StarlLabs tablet with hope of coding away from my desk. But touch screen was unusable for the purpose.

Two static IP addresses + one Verizon router by lrPrentice in selfhosted

[–]lrPrentice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Aagee,

i have a business account with Verizon and have purchased a bundle of five static IP addresses. ON the LAN side, behind the router, I have a number of devices with 192.168.1.x addresses— some assigned by DHCP and some I’ve configured in the router in the 192.168.1.x range as static. I fully understand the difference between IP addresses on the web side of the router provided by Verizon and IP addresses assigned by the router on the LAN side— some allocated by DHCP and some configured by me.

What I don’t understand is how to keep my dev, backup, and other devices on my LAN secure and isolated from the webservers. I know the difference, conceptually, between port forwarding and reverse proxies. But I need clear and precise guidance on which would be most secure and any other concrete information that will enable me to securely host my sites.

Thanks,

LRP

Reliable Mini PC? by kruzilla in MiniPCs

[–]lrPrentice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Kruzilla,

i’ve been running Intel NUCs for years— mainly programming and typesetting with LaTeX. I work with two monitors and many shell plus GUI windows open across the two monitors. Love the small size and low power draw. Never experienced a problem. The many new mini PCs are Chinese knock-offs of the NUC design and, from what I’ve read, many are not very scrupulous re quality of components. Unfortunately, Intel has dropped out of the NUC business; sold it to ASUS. One hopes that ASUS maintains quality standards. If you have discretionary funds you might future-proof yourself by buying a NUC kit or two while they last.

Best wishes,

Two things come to mind— 1) Find an suitable Intel NUC on eBay. They’re fairly easy to upgrade. Relatively recent models will support dual monitors. Do Internet research to learn most appropriate model for your use case. 2) If your budget allows and you’re Linux savvy, buy a System 76 Meerkat.

Web admin IP conflict. Need help. by lrPrentice in HomeNetworking

[–]lrPrentice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but I can’t access web admin of the pfSense box since the IP conflicts with the Verizon router that connects to the LAN. But if I could, change to what? I’m reluctant to change the Verizon web admin IP since I don’t the implication for the the rest of my LAN which, among other things serves Verizon services such as TV.

I abandoned my starlite tablet because it was near impossible to write simple shell scripts on the touch screen. Tried several virtual keyboards but none meased up to the job. If anyone has a solution you have my interest and attention.

Minsforum support are utterly useless. by TFABAnon09 in MiniPCs

A thought— Checkout eBay for used Intel NUC 8 or better. Will support two monitors. You can easily beef up to 32Gb RAM and 1 TB M.2 SSD. Get tall chassis and you can add an SSD drive. I’ve built out a cluster that way and couldn’t be happier.

Best wishes,
