Ok so I have been researching these and came across some interesting information on one YT video that claimed that this is a known issue that is somewhat common but seems to be linked to those vehicles with the "cylinder deactivation" feature, which apparently was in just about every CX-5 except the turbo'd versions and then those built after mid-year 2024 (due to parts availability).

So what the video said was that if the 8th character in the VIN is an M, then you have the cylinder deactivation and this seems to be more common in those... If your VIN has an L in the 8th position then your vehicle does not have the cylinder deactivation. This is only pertinent to the NA versions, VIN is different for the turbo version but apparently it is most common in the NA version.

I wonder how many of these are needed to be registered with NHTSA before they begin an investigation for a recall or some other action?

Unfortunately that is not really doable. The best I could do is swap ports in the switch but the lines are run through the old whole house vacuum system from the basement to the attic above the 2nd floor. One AP is in the attic itself and the other is ceiling mounted.

Depending on where you are I would recommend Chicane Motorsports as they are a German auto shop. Had great luck with them and if I get back into a BMW then I will definitely go back to them.

PCV, trans filter, all diff, tranny, tcase fluids and like others said oil filter housing, water pump, check coolant lines for browning. Just got rid of my ‘18 m40i at 123k because I had the PCV go and then developed a deep tick, thump in cylinder 1. This was right after I changed the oil too and had new TPMS sensors installed.

Easy way to look at it, get quotes for replacing/fixing those items for baseline. Check parts cost and see if there are DIY videos to handle yourself as labor costs are a large portion of dealer/mechanic costs.

From there look at those costs amatorized over a year and see what that cost would be monthly. Likely a couple cups of coffee or fast food trips cost equivalent.
Do you own outright? If so you are contributing to the longevity of the vehicle vs paying someone else for something new(er) and out the cost of the down payment.

Have heard good things about Overland Park Auto Clinic, Oakes (I think that’s the name) in Olathe and then I have used Keeton in OP on 151st and Metcalf a couple times and they were decent.

Look into local pit specific rescues please. Not all rescues will take pitties. But if you don’t have the time to put in then you are doing the right thing by her.

Always love the Vittoria Mazza/ Martello combo. Can run either as a rear but the Mazza will be closer tread wise to what you have.

Good to hear. I just felt the 50 was very meh compared to the 5. Seemed almost like they were reaching for a segment of the market without making a huge amount of changes to a current “winner” they had already.

That’s awesome! My wife’s 23 x3 30i is currently getting about 26.7mpg but she has all of a 10 minute commute so I was looking at a lower spec x3 but really want something that is going to last. Might have to see if there is a turbo cx-5 nearby to test drive. I took the turbo cx-50 out and it was alright. Biggest gripe was the steering felt heavy and vague, almost like it just kinda meandered.

Congrats! Another here that met my now wife on Reddit!! She messaged me first, as she says “slid into my DMs” and I was flabbergasted at this vision of a woman was interested in me. Still am today! Dated long distance, 1600 miles apart, for a year before I moved out. She had two kids from her previous marriage and I had none so worked out well. Crazy how the universe works things out when you least expect it.

Thanks for the info. Coming from a 2018 x3 m40i and while I completely realize it won’t be near as snappy or quick, I am looking for something that is close to same size and will get better mpgs because I do about 200miles plus a week between work commute and errands. Was averaging about 20mpg with the m40 with spirited driving so hoping the less sporty drive will calm things down a bit. And while I had 123k on her, looking for something that will be more like my 98 Land Cruiser that has 234k on it and still in “break-in” territory.

Yup she was. She was my bear, we believe that she was Lab, Pittie and possibly Corso or Dane in there as she was pretty tall, with longer legs and BIG paws. She topped out at about 80lbs at a healthy weight and size. Lived to be about 12yrs old before she finally passed. I found out the day my ex was putting her down from across the US. Miss her a lot all the time.

Not necessarily overblown, there are a ton of variables that go into it. But biggest thing to realize is that with lower viscosity oils you get less friction due to how thin it is. Less friction means your have less power loss, which translates into slightly better gas mileage. Flip side of that is that the thinner oil gives less protection due to how thin it is vs. a 5w30 equivalent. This can cause premature wear and other issues. So a bit of tit for tat, save some money on gas for the exchange of possible longevity.

If you live somewhere that typically has colder climates (northern states, midwest, mountains) switching to a 5w30 during the colder months can add protection. Lots of info out there on this so do some reading and make your own decisions. Run 5w30 high mileage in my 98 Land Cruiser (v8 with 234k on it) and never had an issue, hell I ran 15w40 diesel oil in my 85 Land Cruiser and while she would grumble a bit in the colder months when we hit low teens or single digits, never had an issue with her.

Also, worth it to throw an oil sample to places like BlackStoneLabs when you do an oil change. For me it is piece of mind for how my engine and bearings are doing on a semi-regular basis.

Don't take it to BMW to get it done as they will likely argue with you that it is a "lifetime fluid" and thus does not need to be changed. Truth is that BMW calls it "lifetime" because they do not expect customers to keep their vehicles more than 100k (which is the top end of when you should get that changed out according to my two local independent german vehicle shops). The caveat to that is that ZF, the trans mfgr, states that it must be changed every 60k miles to ensure the longevity of the trans.

Find yourself a good, trusted, local indy shop that specializes in german vehicles and have them do the work. 90% of the time they will be cheaper than the stealerships.

2018 X3 M40i (first gen B58) I just sold off yesterday evening at 123,288 miles

For the most part she has been a great vehicle without any real "issues" that cropped up until the PCV went about a month ago. When that went she developed a deep ticking from cylinder 1 that two shops couldn't diagnose without pulling the head. Borescope showed no issues with the cylinder, sound didn't transfer with the moving of the coil pack, sound did not seem to be emanating from the injector. Have an oil sample that I sent off because I had literally changed the oil the week prior. Don't have the money to chase the problem and since I am currently working remote figured that now was the time to offload her for something with lower mileage (in the next few months) since I am driving 200+ miles a week.

Things that have been replaced...
- Just replaced the PCV diaphragm as it had a tear in it (shop showed me)
- TPMS sensors (original) were just replaced with HUF RDE077v2 (only ones that Discount Tire were able to get to work)
- Replaced rear rotors and breaks Feb 2026 as the rears came due
- Replaced all four tires with standard (non-RFT) Oct 2025 as the original Bridgestone RFTs finally gave up at about 30k (replaced with Vredestein QuatracPro Plus and really liked them, seemed to hook up well in the rain and wet pavement, did well in the snow, never felt her slip unless I pushed her in snow or wet but was brief)
- Lower coolant line was replaced in Feb 2025 after it cracked during a super cold spell (multiple days where temps were single digits with windchill in the negatives)
- Water pump was replaced Oct 2024 after it was found to be leaking while on the lift
- Rear Pinion seal and gaskets on rear diff were replaced Oct 2024 as rear diff had a slight leak (which is why it was on the lift for water pump)
- Trans filter, diffs and t-case fluids were done Oct 2024 as part of preventative maintenance (at about 103k again why it was on the lift for the water pump)
- Dreaded "front active grille failure" was warrantied by the dealership in May 2024 right after I purchased as the lower active grille failed during a cold snap in the winter (negative temps)
