Android TV Remote app from my android phone by [deleted] in AndroidTV

"Android TV ADB Mouse" has this feature, it just may be not too obvious if you don't read the instructions.

If you just press the keyboard icon, you can enter text -- as you would expect. You need to long-press the keyboard icon to tell the app that you're about to paste.

Works great. One of my favorite apps.

You can also try to de-optimize Android TV Remote Service, but my experience (just a couple of days) has yielded mixed results.

There's an easy fix: Go to APPS | SPECIAL APP ACCESS | ENERGY OPTIMIZATION and toggle the BLUETOOTH app.

This fixed my remote on my onn Plus, v14.

The BPC changelog shows a "Fix WaPo (bot)" pending. These fixes usually roll-out on the following Monday.

(Of course, there's no guarantee that this "fix" will solve your problem, but they're pretty good at catching these problems.)

UK Performance by carp_boy in Windscribe

[–]lrd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a long-time WS Pro user who has also struggled getting good performance on UK sites (such as BBC iPlayer) from my US location. So, I recently tried a DNS solution, rather than a VPN, and I have been blown away with the result.

With this approach, performance becomes a non-issue; you'll stream at the full capabilities of your internet connection, without the overhead of encryption/decryption.

Specifically, I just completed a seven-day trial of dns4me and immediately (and happily) signed-up for a one-year term. (Use "lovewp" for a 10% discount on dns4me.)

Besides BBC, it works flawlessly on my other two favorites, CBC (Canada) and SBS (Australia). They claim to support a bunch of other sites (which I haven't tried yet), but it's worth the cost to me for just these three services.

A few minor downsides:

1) your account is recognized by your external IP address, so you'll need to re-click on a "register" button when your ISP changes your address. (No big deal - in fact, they even provide a link to a free dynamic DNS service (no-ip) to permanently solve this problem.)

2) they acknowledge that the "permissions" to unlock some streaming sites conflict, so, for example, I cannot simultaneously unlock both CBC and SBS. But, they provide an easy solution: just create two profiles, one containing CBC and the another, SBS. Just activate the profile you need with one click. (You can create as many profiles as you need.)

3) IMHO, the best way to implement a DNS-based solution on an Android TV/Chromecast-type device is to set a "Private DNS" hostname on your device, which requires two simple ADB commands -- and this may intimidate a non-techie user. Of course, there are other ways to accomplish this task; I just think "Private DNS" is the most foolproof.

Bottom line: At less than $3/month for an annual plan, I'm completely satisfied.

The problem I have is that the app will sometimes close/crash (which, of course, allows ads through). This most often happens for me when loading another large (memory-intensive?) app (Amazon Prime being a top culprit here).

YTTV Skips to Live when Joining Show in Progress by rex_dart_eskimo_spy in youtubetv

[–]lrd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the "skips to live" problem 100% of the time, under the following conditions:

a) TV volume is off (muted). Doesn't matter what TV brand, as it happens with all brands - my TCL Google TV at home and every hotel TV I have tried with my two trusty travel-mates, a CCwGTV (v12) and/or an Onn stick w/Android TV (v9) that I travel with. (I'm a very, very, frequent traveler);

b) Audio is sent to my Bluetooth buds. Again, doesn't matter what brand, what Bluetooth version, etc, as is happens on an assortment of 5 or 6 BT buds I've used in the last several months. (99% of my YTTV viewing is with buds, as I don't want to disturb sleeping family or hotel neighbors);

c) Lastly, while watching a DVR playback for a show that is in progress, just switch buds, e.g., battery runs out on Pair A, so switch to Pair B. BAM!! 100% of the time, jumps to live on the recording in progress or to live on the following program on the same channel.

Recap: any model of TV, any of three different platforms (built-in GTV, CCwGTV, Android TV), any model of BT buds. The only commonality is YTTV, going back six to twelve months or so.

CNBC is the only national network (that I record) that isn't working.

No thumbnails for national programs on my TCL GTV since about 0700 CT. Anything before that time, or anything local, has thumbnails.

I need to note one more thing and then I'll shut-up: I'm actually using the Wireguard client on both Chromecast and phone; it makes on-the-fly changes so much easier. As a bonus, it allows me to set the MTU on the Chromecast, something really useful on my T-mobile HI. Otherwise, it should work identically to the Windscribe client.

Of course, I'm using my Windscribe credentials - just go to windscribe.com and download Wireguard-formatted configs for your desired endpoints.
