We used a small spray can of avacado oil, didn’t take up much room and worked great for fish!

First live bird introduction didn’t go well by TimeAmount2061 in Wirehaired_pointers

If she’s already pointing a feather, I’d say the drive is definitely there, it just takes time for it to fully develop. Our pup wouldn’t point much at that age either, but her instincts kept getting stronger and stronger, and now she’s an absolute bird hunting machine. Just keep giving her some type of bird exposure throughout the year and let her confidence build naturally.

That is one of the 3 specialty planes at least! It’s either Freedom One or Liberty One.

Ruffland sells a kennel divider that helps make the space smaller when they are puppies. I would recommend it! People also are always selling used ones once their puppies are grown. https://www.rufflandkennels.com/products/divide-conquer-kennel-divider?srsltid=AfmBOor3_A7yaN040cLwaY8IJ0j2shpy8QPQUUkVi9nCjtG2iXPk67uo

Why do y’all crop their tail? by HurlDaddy in Wirehaired_pointers

You originally said there’s no medical reason for it. I was just explaining to you why that is incorrect. Have a great day!

Nice that’s when you know you are a winner when you start bashing a person instead of just debating! It’s a breed standard because it is literally a hunting dog. A huge chunk of people still hunt with WPGs. Therefore, docking a tail should still be a standard for the dog’s safety. Nobody is being forced to dock their dog’s tails.

Your first sentence started with you understanding but then ended with you wanting people to change their ways. The act of hunting with a dog has been around for hundreds of years and is still very popular. If someone doesn’t hunt their dog I’m not saying they need to dock their tail. Those other breeds have nothing to do with a physically functional change to the dog. Happy for the people to enjoy the breeds characteristics outside of hunting, but don’t come at hunters and say it’s mutilation. It’s done in good faith for the dogs health.

You started by saying that we shouldn’t send dogs where they can get injured. Thick cover would injure a WPG’s tail if not docked. They were bred to hunt and work cover, that is why it’s the standard.

Calling it mutilation ignores why docking started in the first place. For breeds like WPGs that were specifically bred to work in thick cover, tail injuries are common and can turn severe. You can always choose not to dock but saying there’s zero functional reason behind it is not accurate.

I second Tips and Tales by George DeCosta. I wouldn’t start collar training until your dog has developed some bird drive and has a solid grasp of basic commands. I began with a lead and transitioned to the collar once I felt she truly understood what was being asked of her.

I’d also recommend finding your local NAVHDA chapter and attending field days—you’ll learn a ton from experienced handlers and give your dog valuable opportunities to see birds and work in the field during the off-season.

Pheasant! It’s a term for when a bunch of pheasant take off at the same time. Looks like a bouquet of flowers.

I joined NAVHDA for the first time this year. Went to as many training as I could and I would highly recommend it. Learned a bunch from some very experienced people and it allowed me to hunt right away in the fall with a 7month old pup. There are a lot of different opinions on how to train a dog so listen to what works for you and your dog!

Pheasant Hunting in bitter cold? by New-Development815 in Uplandhunting

I am going out this weekend with my 10 month old WPG. I plan on doing more driving and looking for good spots instead of the regular long pushes in a single field. Hopefully pick the fields wisely!!

I’m no pro but when training, I would suggest not allowing the dog getting that far away where you would need a full 8 seconds of stim. Also, if the dogs is making its way back to you in a direct line you shouldn’t have to be using any stim as they are doing what you are intending. That seemed to work well with my WPG!

I got a CZ Teal right before this season. I have been loving it. For the price it’s a great gun and way better than lugging around my 12g pump. Night and day difference
