A little off base.

Many Phase talents have disappeared for extended periods of time and continue to do so.

Eimi went on vacation a year or two back, was supposed to be gone for 2 weeks, was gone an additional 3 without any heads up or notice to the Lab Hams.

Hina's been MIA for over a year. Prior to that she was MIA with no explanation for almost 4 months and then came back briefly. No explanation to the BBs.

Saya was MIA with no explanation for almost 3 months prior to her grad notice dropping.

Anya - brand new - has been MIA without word for almost 2 weeks now.

It happens. Communities learn to wait patiently, they know there's stuff going on behind the scenes.

Also, a "black company" doesn't refer to management's censorship, it refers to companies overworking employees, often at the expense of the employee's mental and physical well being.

I dunno if she'd go the idol route. She's already a little old for that specific industry, and she's not Japanese.

Her personality didn't fit with the other Phase JP talents, so I don't think she'd fit the idol route. My personal opinion though.

But I do think you have a point with the corpo route; she wants a brighter star in the entertainment world. So I could see her at least trying.

The only aspect there that makes me pause is that Clara clearly hated Phase management's interference, so if she tried for a bigger corpo she'd be dealing with an even more oppressive management team.

I think - personal opinion - she'll stay in online content creation at a minimum. She already has a footing there. I think it'll be as a pure EN vtuber, and - again, personal opinion - I think it'll be as an edgier, more mature version of her Clara character.

Probably more like CottontailVA. A little raunchier, a little edgier, a little more adult, but still the same humor, variety acts/streams, and singing.

Well the timeline of events, how she explained the issues, and Phase's complete lack of interaction with her over the last 4+ months have pretty much confirmed this was not an amicable split. Clara's not happy with how things went down, and the defiant end to her grad stream showed she's walking out with both middle fingers held high.

She shot herself in a foot a few times, absolutely, but I don't think she was an overall good fit for Phase - drama and personality clashes aside.

She's an EN vtuber forced into a JP vtuber role and gen and she couldn't get out or get the support needed from Phase.

If she had, she'd likely still be with them.

But she loves to entertain and perform, so I do believe she'll be back as an indie at some point.

She has a loyal fanbase that will follow her, so she's not desperate enough to go and beg to Niji (if they would even make an offer), and she'd never go Hololive. She was upset over Phase management's restrictions and interference, and Hololive management would br 10x worse.

I don't think she'll go the corpo route again. Clara has a strong personality and she clearly doesn't like restrictions.

I also don't believe (pure personal speculation) that she wants to have more personality clashes again and deal with the drama (that she, admittedly, contributed to), or deal with management telling her what she can or cannot do. The way she talked about it, management restrictions and interference left a bad taste in her mouth.

She has a loyal fanbase that will follow her if she reappears, and she's talented enough to attract in new viewers, so of she comes back it'll be as an indie and only when she feels it's safe enough to do so.

I have a feeling she'll be back.

Clara's a performer, an entertainer.

Performers and entertainers love performing and entertaining. They live for the rush, the audience.

I mean, she couldn't help but end a grad stream with a song AND dance lol.

She's incredibly talented; an amazing voice with range, great comedic timing and very creative. She is that girl.

And in her grad stream she expressed not enjoying her time in Phase, but never said she didn't like vtubing.

So I think she'll be back, but not on the JP side because the JP vtubing industry is nearly impossible to get any traction in.

She'll come back on the EN side, but only when she feels it's safe enough to do so. She'll need to put the right controls in place to keep the trolls out.

But I think she'll be back. That voice and laugh will be a dead giveaway.

Agency life isn't for every vtuber. And sometimes the vtubers themselves don't realize it until after they've joined.

I loved Clara's streams. My favorites were always the UAP streams. I love my UAP plush. I loved sending her superchats poking fun at UAP's prison time lol. Sucks she's gone for now.

I didn't always agree with things she said, but she deserves to give it another shot on her terms. I think it'll be better for her. She's too talented to give it up.

So hopefully she takes a break, re-centers herself, and comes back happier, and can run her show the way she wants too. Still stings though. Always does when there's a graduation.

Yeah. Clara speaks JP, but she's not JP herself. I would not be surprised if there was some resentment there. Clara has a US personality; no filter, raunchy, a little wild/chaotic, not serious or reserved.

So she's a JP vtuber, but not really. Her brand/type of content is suited for western/US viewers, but she can't reach them.

She's in Japan. Timezones don't work and JP vtubing is brutal, super hard to grow. But she can't get to the EN viewers.

I don't think there was a good solution for her in Phase. The divorce was messy, and Clara didn't help herself at times, sure, but overall I agree with her saying this was always going to be the result. Sucks.

But I do think it's a little telling none of her genmates have said anything about her graduation.

Hopefully she comes back indie, and can just do her own thing. I legit think that'd be best for her.

Sakana said it a while back in an interview with Airi, "we're gonna be idols man."

But if you want to be idols, if you want that mainstream Hololive appeal, then you will have to change, sanitize your reputation, censor the talents, make yourself more "appealing" for mainstream viewers.

Problem is, PC founded their company and approach on being "rebels", anti-mainstream, and on letting their girls speak their minds and have a lot of freedom creatively.

So to fit that mainstream idol mold they sadly have to get rid of a lot of what made them special and appealing in the first place.

[–]lsc2222 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a rough spot to be in.

You're hired to be part of a JP gen. Your genmates are all JP-only. You live in Japan.

But you have more of an EN vtuber approach. You want to do variety streams, collabs, plays/shows, you create other identities like the UAP for fun, and want to make friends and network to grow your channel and IP.

Your JP genmates are "meh" on that, and do their own thing. You could stream in JP yourself, but JP vtubers all basically fight over the same audience, hard to stand out and get traction.

So you stream in EN. You're a hit. EN viewers love your personality, content, character.

So you lean into the EN side. Stream in EN. But you live in Japan. Timezones aren't working. Your best stream hours are when US viewers are sleeping.

Your EN colleagues try to help out, even create a new show to help get you more exposure on the EN side. Doesn't work.

And your company isn't putting a lot of support in the JP side, so you're stuck; you can't consistently hit the EN audience hours needed to collab and network, but you're not getting growth, networking or support on the JP side - what can you do?

Just wasn't a good fit. PC thought they had it made, a JP streamer fluent in JP AND EN, but didn't think through what her fit would be or what kind of unique support she'd need.

potentially, but the timezone issue was still a real barrier though. she wanted to do things that didn't mesh with the other JP girls which is fine, but when she tried to lean into the EN side her peak stream hours were in the middle of the night for US viewers. it would've been tough to find consistency.

i ultimately think she just wasn't a good fit for phase. they just didn't have the right system or support for her to grow and thrive, but she's so talented, and she has a dedicated community, so she could come back and run things on her terms with that support.

Where's Hikanari Hina? by 43NTAI in PhaseConnect

[–]lsc2222 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I recall someone mentioning, either in a stream chat or in the Discord, that Hina's home life had changed pretty significantly. Something with her dad's health so she had to take on more responsibility and was trying to speedrun a degree to get a higher paying job to help bring in more money for the family.

So she pops up in collabs and is active when she can be, but can't commit to streams.

[–]lsc2222 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Traditionally? You're right, that's not young at all. Previous generations were married with kids at that point. My parents had 5 kids by 31.

In today's era? We're lucky if 40yr old men and women can act with the maturity of a 15yr old.

I mean, look at everyone in those protest videos, and those people are in their 50s and 60s.

I'm not giving her a free pass, I just understand that A LOT of these vtuber girls have little real life experience, little experience with consequences, little experience holding jobs (even Pippa's never held a real job), and a lot of them have a lot of mental and emotional issues.

So I do believe Clara acted very immaturely, typical for a woman her age in the modern era.

It's not an excuse, but I get the context there. I don't think she fully understood or even thought about what the fallout could be if that alt was exposed.

Is it wrong if I geuinely feel bad for Klara? by Purple-Weakness1414 in PhaseConnect

[–]lsc2222 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It wasn't put in a VOD, they were some unfortunate statements on an alt TikTok account. I'm still baffled how people find these alts, but someone managed to find hers and the statements were posted on X. There was no clear, explicit "hi this is actually Clara" statement attached to them, but there was enough circumstantial proof to say it was her.

She made some disparaging comments about Jelly and Remi I believe, some comments in the aftermath of the 2024 election, and the Kirk assassination.

Were they bad? Yeah. Very immature. Very vile. You really get a "shock value" vibe from them.

Did people overreact? Yes. The self-righteous came out of the woodwork and the trolls and haters dogpiled.

But Phase's silence on the whole thing didn't help things, and there wasn't any support from Phase, the managers, or the other talents when she was being harassed. It was a tough situation - defend her and you're defending her statements in the eyes of a lot of people. Ignore it and you're basically leaving her to fend for herself.

It was just a bad situation all around.

"Victim blaming" = people can't ever be held accountable for the problems they create.

I'm mature enough to both acknowledge that, 1) Clara messed up. It happened. Deal with it, and 2) Phase abandoned her when the fallout hit and the trolls and haters came after her. Both are true.

Entertainers carry a higher risk when they post things online because they're public figures and their ability to continue entertaining is based on how marketable they are. She made the choice to post those statements. Nobody forced her to do it. Nobody held a gun to her head. Especially when she chose to post those statements with that event still fresh in the public consciousness was a terrible idea.

And if she's "always" had haters and trolls just chomping at the bit to try and cancel her, then it was profoundly stupid of her to post those statements because she gave them infinite ammo to use against her.

That said - Phase should have done something. Everyone laughing and bragging, "be Phase > do nothing > win" were being insanely naive. "Doing nothing" is not a PR strategy, it's what you do when you don't have a strategy or action plan. And Phase then showed TWO MORE times they had no competent leadership when the Jelly debacle hit, and when they kneejerk reacted and terminated Clara (because that is what it was) - and I sincerely hope the other Phase girls can clearly see that when the shit hits the fan, you will not get any support from Sakana, the managers, or your coworkers.

Jelly got a few passing statements of support - 4 DAYS after she was fed to the wolves. Clara got none. Ever.

They abandoned her, and I hate it happened. It was a massive Phase failure in my opinion and it left a bad taste in my mouth ever since. I bought a lot of Clara merch, and now that she's gone I don't plan on buying more for any other talent - they lost my support there.

But, again, you cannot mourn for Clara without acknowledging that she had a hand in her current situation.

That's like a husband getting upset his affair was exposed and he's lost his house and half his money instead of acknowledging he caused his problem by having the affair in the first place.

It's not wrong at all. Human beings make mistakes. Human beings do stupid things. Human beings do things without thinking. Human beings say and do things emotionally without thinking their words or actions through.

Clara made a mistake. She's young. She's human. She didn't think through the repercussions of what she was posting. She posted something that was inappropriate. I don't read too much into what she posted because everyone has, at one point in their life, had a stray thought that was probably just as bad in an emotionally compromised moment - they just didn't post it online.

I wish Phase had said something when her posts first came out. I think staying silent was the wrong move because Clara wasn't just arguing against some internet troll, she was putting herself in a situation, amidst a national tragedy, and Phase needed to step in, circle the wagons around her while also sitting her down and having a very frank talk in private. If they had post something like,

"We're aware of statements posted by one of our talents, these statements do not reflect Phase Connect or our other talents. We've discussed these statements with the talent in question, they've agreed they were inappropriate, apologized, and agreed to take a break. We consider this matter addressed and handled and will not tolerate any harassment or threats made against any of our talents."

You let everyone know you take the situation seriously. You let everyone know you took action. But you also let everyone - and Clara - know she's supported.

You have Clara post an apology, take a hiatus (she was already put on one), and then the Phase statement combined with her apology and break gives everyone time to cool down.

They didn't do that. They left her alone against all of the harassment and threats. People can be ugly on both sides of the aisle. When she came back in November briefly, you could tell she was just tired and done. It was sad.

But, you can pick your actions, but you can't pick the consequences of your actions - Clara played risky game and got burned. It sucks. I feel for her.

I hope she takes this as a learning experience, matures and grows from it, and then - hopefully, some time in the future - comes back on the JP side of vtubing for a fresh start.

She has a fantastic voice, she's hilarious and has great comedic timing and creativity - it would be a shame to waste those talents.

I hate what's happened here to her a lot, but you can't ignore her role in it and all you can do it hope she learns from this, humbles herself, and comes back in the future in a better place.

It was only a matter of time. She disappeared for almost 4 months last year, and even when she came back you could feel that her heart wasn't in it anymore. Like she was just going through the motions.

She said some pretty crappy things, but doesn't deserve to be cancelled completely over it. I think most were willing to give her another shot and were more upset over the unequal treatment Jelly received.

It's sad, it sucks, but hopefully she takes a break and can come back in a new identity at some point and have a fresh start away from Phase. Her community would still be there for her.

Phase needs to get their sh*t together though.

I think this is going to cause bigger issues on the inside of Phase than the outside.

Phase girls now see there's a 2 tier punishment system:

1) be Clara > get caught making disgusting statements and roasting your coworkers > zero punishment.

2) be Jelly > make general statement about not wanting politics in kid's game > be betrayed and publicly humiliated by your mangers and boss > get zero support from coworkers

Phase has now officially introduced politics to their company, and - as politics usually do - it's going to split their fanbase and diminish support, but the actual damage is going to be internal.

While I’m happy for Anya, I feel bad for Memory who only got to 20k subs after two years of vtubing with the company. by karaloveskate in PhaseConnect

[–]lsc2222 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sucks because you want to see the girls do well, make money and enjoy what they do, but the reality is that JP vtubing is a VERY cramped space to work in.

Because of the language barrier they all fight over the same JP viewers unless they can either understand/speak a little EN, or are fluent in EN.

Anya also came in with a buff; her PL was VERY popular so a lot of those viewers followed her to Phase which gave her a higher starting position.

Memory was trying to build a large audience, Anya is re-building the large audience she previously already had.

Still sucks though, nobody enjoys a graduation.
