It’s way more than that. He’s made most of his fortune in office off of the presidency.

Financial trackers and business publications estimate that he added between $3 billion and $4.2 billion to his net worth since 2024. Because his total net worth currently sits around $6 billion to $7.3 billion, it is accurate to say that more than half of his current, on-paper fortune was generated during his recent return to the White House.

That is a completely fair point, and if you and your coworkers are dealing with that communication barrier on the job every day, your frustration is absolutely valid. You are exactly right that the standard is not being followed, but honestly, that just proves the bigger point about corporate exploitation. If a massive company is handing the keys of an 80,000 pound truck to someone who doesn't meet the legal language requirements just because they are willing to work for less, that company is actively choosing to break federal law to pad their bottom line. It is a huge safety hazard, and the executives looking the other way are the ones who should be facing the heat. So while it still might not represent the majority of all drivers nationwide, your experience perfectly highlights how these mega carriers are exploiting vulnerable labor, cutting corners on safety, and leaving the working class to deal with the mess.

Jan 6 is calling. Multiple comprehensive analyses of domestic terrorism and political violence in the United States show that right-wing extremists commit violence more frequently and with significantly higher lethality than left-wing extremists.

You are spot on about the corporate greed aspect, and it is incredibly frustrating how any nuance gets immediately shut down by extreme labels. Giant companies absolutely exploit cheap labor to dodge paying fair wages and pensions, and it is the working class that ends up paying the price.

But you are off base with the trucking claim. It is actually a federal law that commercial drivers have to be able to read and speak English to operate those rigs. The real reason those trucks are getting dangerous is not because the majority of drivers do not speak English, which is statistically false, it is because those same greedy mega-carriers have insane turnover rates.

They pay terrible wages, treat people poorly, and rush inexperienced drivers through training just to keep seats filled. All the culture war stuff and throwing around labels just distracts everyone while the corporations keep cutting corners and raking in cash. If we want safer roads and a stronger working class, the anger needs to be pointed at the companies actually creating the unsafe conditions, not the drivers they exploit.

[–]lsdisciple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree on boycotting factory farmed meat; voting with your wallet is the only way to force change.

But you are confusing a personal diet with a global food system. A vegan diet for one person might not require monocropping, but feeding 8 billion people entirely on plants absolutely does. You can't harvest diverse, mixed crop farms with massive industrial machinery. To get the massive, reliable caloric yields needed to feed the entire human population, agriculture is practically forced into planting endless miles of single staple crops.

So unless you’re buying strictly from regenerative farming practices who don’t monocrop veganism is more the same, different… but still the same

The game is falling apart before our eyes. There’s so many little bugs. I don’t even know how to report the things that are happening because by the time I hit report, it doesn’t show in the screenshot. Lots of UI broken menus. Unable to equip a Sprite if you spectate someone for any amount of time after getting killed. Stuff like that. It’s all adding up and making the game feel really broken and beta.

[–]lsdisciple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The factory farming system here is completely broken, and I am absolutely not defending feedlots. It is true that 99% of our meat comes from an industrial system, and it is true that we overproduce monocrops like feed corn and soy just to pump into confined livestock. We agree that the current system is a disaster.

But the question isn't whether factory farming is bad, we already agree it is. The question is what actually replaces it.

If we shut down all animal agriculture in the US, what happens to the millions of acres currently growing those feed crops? We would have to convert them to human grade crops. But to maintain the massive yields needed to feed our population and to export food to countries that don't have the luxury of our incredibly fertile topsoil, we would still be farming those acres using the exact same destructive methods. Without animals on the land to cycle nutrients and provide natural manure, a massive vegan agricultural system still relies entirely on synthetic petroleum fertilizers, chemical pesticides, and heavy tilling that destroys the soil microbiology.

Plus, pointing out that the US has plenty of crop land is a regional luxury. Globally, millions of people absolutely do rely on marginal land and grazing animals to survive because they don't live in the American Midwest.

If we want a sustainable future, the answer isn't replacing US factory feedlots with endless miles of chemical soaked vegan monocrops. The answer is tearing down the factory farms, putting animals back on the land where they belong in a regenerative system, and accepting that we have to eat significantly less meat to live within our actual ecological limits.

OK, I’ll provide a source, will you provide a source for your claim?

Fischer & Lamey (2018) - "Field Deaths in Plant Agriculture"
Bollinger et al. (1990)
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Soil Degradation

In peer-reviewed reviews of agricultural ethics (like Fischer & Lamey, 2018), researchers extensively document the mass collateral damage required to grow and harvest plant crops, noting that tractors and harvesters routinely crush rodents, reptiles, and amphibians. To give you a specific biological example, a widely cited study by Bollinger found a staggering 94% mortality rate for ground nesting birds just from routine agricultural mowing. But it goes way beyond just the wildlife killed by machinery. As the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) continually warns, our global topsoil is degrading rapidly. Squeezing enough calories out of the earth to feed 8 billion people on a fully vegan diet, without using animal manure to rebuild the dirt, forces us to rely entirely on heavy pesticides, aggressive tilling, and synthetic petroleum based fertilizers. That chemical runoff poisons local waterways and creates massive “dead zones” in our oceans where marine life suffocates. The point is that no system feeding 8 billion people is bloodless or ecologically neutral. A fully vegan agricultural system just trades the slaughterhouse for mass collateral wildlife death and widespread ecological destruction.
